Astra Theme Review (2026): The Builder-Neutral Theme and Its AI Bundles
Astra is the theme people choose before they have chosen a page builder, and that is both its best feature and its business model. Here is what Brainstorm Force sells in 2026, what the theme does well, where it has been breaking, and who should walk past it.

The short answer
Astra is a lightweight Customizer theme that works with almost every page builder and ships a huge starter-template library. Buy it for a brochure site or small store built in Elementor or Spectra. Skip it if you run many client sites, since Astra Pro now covers 3, or if you need breakpoints you can change without code.

Astra in one sitting: a universal adapter with a sales funnel attached
Most themes have an opinion about how you should build pages. Astra mostly does not. It hands the layout to whatever builder you bring, keeps its own settings in the Customizer, and stays out of the way. For a business owner who has not decided between Elementor, Spectra and the plain block editor, that neutrality is worth real money, because the theme never has to be replaced when the builder changes.
The catch is everything wrapped around the theme. The 2026 pricing page sells AI site generation, hosted sites and a free domain alongside the license, and the entry plan for Astra Pro now stops at three websites. The theme is a good product. The offer around it asks more questions than it used to. Here is the short version before the long one, one row per question a buyer actually asks.
| Verdict | Why | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed approach | Good start, owner-dependent | Small front end and no jQuery in its own scripts; the builder you add sets the real weight |
| Ease of setup | Very easy | Starter Templates import a finished site; the header builder is free and visual |
| Design flexibility | Wide, with one locked door | Builder-neutral layouts, but breakpoints change only through PHP filters |
| WooCommerce | Fine free, much better with Pro | Quick view, 2-step checkout and gallery options all sit behind Pro |
| Builder fit | Very broad | Elementor, Spectra, Beaver Builder, Divi Builder, Brizy and more listed as compatible |
| License value | Strong for one site, tight for agencies | Pro covers 3 sites; AI bundles renew at full price |
| Support and ownership | Stable owner, busy forum | Brainstorm Force still sells it; premium support comes with Pro |
| Long-term risk | Moderate | The 4.13 series brought fatal errors, an Elementor conflict and at least one advised rollback |
Read the rows that matter to your site and skip the rest. A one-site plumber cares about setup and speed. An agency cares about the license row and the risk row, and should read the Astra pricing breakdown before anything else on this page.
Brainstorm Force, a million installs and a family of add-ons
Astra is made and sold by Brainstorm Force. The free theme has been listed on wordpress.org since May 2017, and as of October 2026 it reports more than 1,000,000 active installs, 26.79 million total downloads and a score of 98 out of 100 from 6,536 ratings. Version 4.14.0 shipped on September 24, 2026. It is a classic theme, configured through the Customizer, which the vendor describes as React based.
Brainstorm Force does not sell a theme so much as a product family, and a real Astra site usually runs several members of it. Knowing which piece does what saves hours when something breaks, because the theme is rarely the only suspect.
- Astra, the free theme: global colors, typography, layout and the header and footer builder.
- Astra Pro, a plugin: the Site Builder for custom headers, footers, 404 pages and code hooks, plus mega menu, sticky header and the deeper WooCommerce controls.
- Starter Templates (the astra-sites plugin, itself on more than 1,000,000 sites): imports whole demo sites.
- Spectra and Spectra Pro: the vendor's own block-editor builder.
- Ultimate Addons for Elementor and SureForms: Ultimate Addons comes in the paid toolkits; SureForms Agency only in the Business Toolkit.
- ZipWP: the AI site-generation platform bundled with every AI plan for three years.
One small warning sign about the marketing: the vendor's own numbers do not agree. The homepage invites you to join 4.8M+ businesses, while the pricing page says 2M+ sites and 1.8M+ users. Template counts disagree too, at 145+ on one page and 300+ on another. None of that affects the code. It does suggest reading the pricing page slowly.
The first afternoon: Customizer, header rows and a template decision
Setup is where Astra earns its reputation. A new owner can have a presentable site in an afternoon, and most of that afternoon is spent choosing rather than configuring. The order below is how we would do it on a clean install, and it is the order that keeps a site tidy a year later.
- 1
Install the free theme and a child theme
The child theme gives custom code a safe home before anyone is tempted to paste CSS into five different boxes.
- 2
Decide on the builder before the template
A starter template arrives already built with a particular page builder, so the template you import usually decides the builder you live with.
- 3
Import one template, not three
Each import can add plugins and content. Pick one, then delete the demo pages you will not use.
- 4
Set global colors and typography
Do it in the Customizer once, so the builder inherits the palette instead of inventing its own.
- 5
Build the header in the free builder
Desktop, tablet and mobile each get above, primary and below rows. Buy Pro later only if you need a sticky header or mega menu.
Astra Pro changes the model in one important way. Its Site Builder lets you create layouts for headers, footers, 404 pages and hook positions, with display rules, inside the dashboard. That is powerful, and it is also the most common source of a header that differs from page to page with nobody sure why. Our Astra customization service exists largely to untangle that.
What Astra costs in 2026, and why three is the number to remember
The free theme costs nothing and is genuinely usable for a business site. Everything else is sold annually or as a lifetime license, with a 14-day money-back guarantee on every plan. As of October 2026, Astra Pro on its own costs $69 a year or $249 lifetime, for up to 3 websites. The Astra Pro + AI plan starts at $99 and renews at $149. The Essential Toolkit + AI, marked most popular, starts at $199 for up to 10 sites and renews at $299. The Business Toolkit + AI starts at $279 for up to 1,000 sites and renews at $429.
Free Astra already covers
- The drag-and-drop header and footer builder, desktop to mobile
- Global colors, typography and container layout in the Customizer
- A transparent header and an off-canvas mobile menu
- WooCommerce basics: header cart, shop columns, product structure, sale bubble
You pay for Astra Pro when you need
- Site Builder layouts for headers, footers, 404 pages and hooks
- Sticky headers, mega menus and extra header elements
- Quick view, AJAX add to cart, 2-step and distraction-free checkout
- White label and the listed CSS File Generation option
The pricing page states that all renewals are at full price, so budget on the renewal figure, not the introductory one. The lifetime licenses look generous next to that, though a lifetime license is only as useful as the vendor's appetite for keeping that product line alive. The full plan-by-plan detail, including what each toolkit bundles, is on our Astra pricing page.
Speed and SEO: a lean theme that cannot vouch for its passengers
Brainstorm Force says Astra needs under 50 KB of resources and can load a site in 0.5 seconds, and that it is fully compatible with HTTP/2. Treat those as the vendor's numbers. What we can confirm from the 4.14.0 source is narrower and still good: the theme's own front-end scripts do not depend on jQuery, apart from one WooCommerce-related script. A theme that does not drag in jQuery on every page is a sound foundation.
Two settings decide most of what Astra itself contributes to speed. By default it prints its Customizer CSS inline in each page; the current free versus Pro comparison lists CSS File Generation as a Pro feature. And Astra > Settings > Performance offers to load Google Fonts locally, with preloading, which removes a trip to Google's servers on first paint. After that, the page builder and its add-ons decide your scores, not Astra. The Astra speed guide walks through each setting in order.
On SEO, Astra does what a theme should and no more. It does not write your titles, descriptions or sitemaps; an SEO plugin does. What the theme controls is speed, clean markup and mobile layout, all of which Google measures. Free Astra also lets you show or hide breadcrumbs on single products in a store. If rankings are slipping, start with how themes affect SEO before blaming the theme, and call our theme speed optimization team if the numbers stay stubborn.
Elementor, Spectra, WooCommerce: how good a host Astra is
Builder fit is the reason most people choose Astra. The pricing page lists Elementor, Beaver Builder, Divi Builder, Brizy, WPBakery, Visual Composer and Thrive Architect as compatible, and Astra Pro's mega menu can pull Gutenberg, Elementor, Beaver Builder, Divi or Brizy templates into dropdowns. The paid toolkits bundle Ultimate Addons for Elementor for Elementor shops and Spectra Pro for block-editor shops.
Compatible is not the same as conflict-free. Recent wordpress.org threads report Astra's ast-article-single class attaching itself to Elementor Loop Grid items and changing their width, and a fatal error in class-astra-elementor.php with Astra 4.13.7 and Elementor 4.2.1 that broke the Elementor editor. If you build in Elementor, read Astra with Elementor for the settings that keep the two from arguing. If you build in blocks, Astra with Gutenberg covers Spectra and the plain editor.
For stores, free Astra gives you a header cart dropdown, shop column control, product structure, content width, sale bubble styles and breadcrumb visibility. Pro adds the things that move conversion: AJAX add to cart, quantity buttons, distraction-free and 2-step checkout, quick view, infinite pagination, an off-canvas shop sidebar, gallery layouts and image zoom. That is a capable small-store setup. Our Astra WooCommerce guide explains which settings to touch first, and WooCommerce repair handles the checkout that stopped taking cards.
Mobile menus and the breakpoint you cannot drag
Astra's free header builder treats phones as a layout of their own, not an afterthought. Desktop, tablet and mobile each get their own layout, the mobile menu can open as a dropdown, a flyout or a full-screen panel, and a transparent header is included. Pro adds sticky header options, mega menus and extra header elements.
The weak spot is the switch point. Astra turns on the toggle menu at 921 pixels and treats 544 pixels as mobile. The documentation describes only one way to move those lines: the astra_tablet_breakpoint and astra_mobile_breakpoint PHP filters. There is no Customizer slider, and support threads on the free version point owners straight to the filter doc. For a menu with eight items that wraps badly at 1,000 pixels, that means a developer or a child theme, not a setting.
There is also a reported case worth testing for on your own site: an off-canvas mobile menu that opens empty on real phones, with the hamburger turning into an X and no links appearing, while desktop and browser emulation look fine. If that is you, Astra mobile menu not working lists the causes in order, and Astra header builder problems covers the builder itself.
What has gone wrong lately: the 4.13 series and the WordPress 7.0 slowdown
A theme on a million sites will always have a busy forum. The question is whether the problems cluster, and in 2026 they did, around the 4.13 releases and the move to WordPress 7.0. None of these make Astra a bad buy. They make a staging site and a tested update routine mandatory.
- A Customizer that never finishes loading. One user measured about 127 seconds for customize.php under WordPress 7.0 with Astra 4.13.x, WooCommerce and Elementor Pro active. Settings that will not stick have their own guide: Astra Customizer not saving.
- Fatal errors after updates. One owner hit a 'Class Astra_Notices not found' error from the Pro addon after 4.13. Start at Astra layout broken after update.
- A checkout casualty. Another reported that 4.13.1 caused memory problems that broke GPay and Apple Pay at checkout. Support's first suggestion was a rollback.
- Styles that refuse to change. Inline dynamic CSS and caching layers combine badly; see Astra CSS not updating and Astra fonts not loading.
- License and import snags. Covered in Astra Pro license not activating and Starter Templates import failed.
Everything Astra-specific we fix lives under the Astra repair hub. If the site is down rather than misbehaving, our WordPress theme repair team works on staging first and restores the live site last, so an urgent fix does not become a second emergency. More general symptoms sit in the troubleshooting section.
Buy it, skip it, or compare it first
Astra is a good buy if you
- Run one business site and want it live from a starter template this month
- Build in Elementor or Spectra and want a theme that will not fight the builder
- Sell a modest catalog through WooCommerce and will pay for Pro's checkout tools
- Have someone who will test updates on staging before clicking the button
Look elsewhere if you
- Manage a dozen client sites and do not want toolkit pricing
- Need custom breakpoints and have no developer to write filters
- Want one vendor's answer to speed rather than a theme plus several plugins
- Run a site where a payment-breaking update would cost more than a rebuild
The head-to-heads go deeper than this review can. Astra vs Kadence and Astra vs GeneratePress are the lean-theme matchups most buyers want. Astra vs Blocksy, Neve vs Astra and OceanWP vs Astra cover the other multipurpose options. Astra vs Hello Elementor and Astra vs Divi settle the builder question, and Flatsome vs Astra is for store owners. Every matchup lives under theme comparisons, and the rest of our reviews are in the WordPress themes section.
Then there is the option of no theme at all. When a site has become the business, with leads, data-driven pages or member logins, every WordPress theme turns into one layer of a stack you have to babysit. Astra vs Next.js puts the whole Astra stack against a custom build row by row, and moving Astra to Next.js shows what happens to Customizer settings, Spectra blocks and Elementor pages. The site you get is edited in Athena CMS, with plain fields, a real preview and agents like Argus watching for broken links and failing forms.
Questions people ask before they call
For a single business site, yes. The free theme is light, builder-neutral and easy to set up, and Astra Pro at $69 a year (as of October 2026) adds the Site Builder, sticky headers and WooCommerce tools. It is less attractive for agencies, because Pro now covers 3 sites and the AI toolkits renew at full price. See Astra pricing.
Often. Free Astra includes the header and footer builder for desktop, tablet and mobile, global colors and typography, a transparent header, an off-canvas mobile menu and basic WooCommerce controls. You need Pro for custom header and footer layouts with display rules, sticky headers, mega menus and checkout improvements such as 2-step checkout and quick view.
It is one of the most common pairings, and Astra lists Elementor as compatible. Recent forum threads show friction, though: Astra's article class affecting Elementor Loop Grid items, and a fatal error with Astra 4.13.7 and Elementor 4.2.1. Test updates on staging. Our Astra and Elementor guide covers the settings that matter.
Only in code. Astra switches to the toggle menu at 921 pixels and uses 544 pixels for mobile. The documentation describes changing them with the astra_tablet_breakpoint and astra_mobile_breakpoint PHP filters, placed in a child theme. No Customizer setting is documented. Our Astra developers do this routinely.
Brainstorm Force makes and sells Astra, along with Astra Pro, Starter Templates, Spectra, Ultimate Addons for Elementor, SureForms and the ZipWP AI platform that comes with its 2026 bundles. The free theme is distributed through wordpress.org, where it is flagged as a commercial theme with support at the vendor's own site.
The theme itself is unlikely to be the problem. The vendor says it needs under 50 KB, and its own front-end scripts avoid jQuery outside one WooCommerce script. Builders, add-on packs and third-party scripts usually decide the result. Measure first, then work through the Astra speed guide.
