Astra Developer for Hire: Custom Work Built on Hooks, Not Hope
Astra is a sound chassis. The trouble on most Astra sites comes from what gets bolted on later, one plugin per problem. We build on Astra the way it was designed to be extended: a child theme, the Customizer, the hooks and Astra Pro only where it earns its seat.

The short answer
Hire an Astra developer when you need custom headers, templates, WooCommerce changes or integrations that the Customizer cannot do alone. A good one works in a child theme, places code with Astra's action hooks or Pro's Site Builder, keeps Spectra or your page builder in its lane, and tells you when Next.js is the better buy.

The Astra site that worked fine until the fourth plugin
Nobody calls an Astra developer on a good day. They call after the update that took down checkout, or the afternoon the Customizer spun for two minutes and never opened. Astra's own support forum on wordpress.org has the receipts: a 4.13 release that threw a fatal 'Astra_Notices' error from the Pro add-on, a fatal error in class-astra-elementor.php with Elementor 4.2.1, and a mobile menu that opens as an empty drawer on real phones.
- "The header is different on every page and I do not know why." Usually a Site Builder layout, a page-level setting and a builder template all claim the same job.
- "We added a feature and the site got slower." Another plugin, another stylesheet on every URL, including the ones that never use it.
- "Our last developer edited the theme files." Then an update arrived and quietly erased the edits.
- "Nobody can tell me which license we own." Astra Pro, a toolkit bundle, or a lifetime deal bought by an agency that has since stopped answering email.
If the site is broken right now, start at our Astra repair hub, which covers emergencies like a header builder that stopped working. This page is about building: adding what the business needs on top of Astra without creating the next emergency.
Six layers inside one Astra site
Astra looks like one product. Under the hood it is a stack, and most of our work is deciding which layer a change belongs in. Put a change in the wrong layer and it works until the next update. Put it in the right one and nobody thinks about it again. Our full Astra review covers the theme as a buyer sees it; this is the developer's map.
| What it does | How we use it | |
|---|---|---|
| Free theme (4.14.0, 1,000,000+ installs) | Customizer settings, header and footer builder, dynamic CSS | Global colors, type, containers and header rows set once, centrally |
| Action hooks | Named spots such as astra_header_after and astra_entry_content_before | Custom components placed in code from a child theme |
| Astra Pro add-on | Site Builder for headers, footers, 404 pages and hook layouts; mega menu; sticky header | Conditional layouts the client can see and toggle in the dashboard |
| Spectra | Brainstorm Force's block builder; Spectra Pro sits in the paid bundles | Page layouts in the block editor when there is no third-party builder |
| Starter Templates plugin | Imports full demo sites (astra-sites, 1,000,000+ installs) | A starting point at most; we strip what the demo dragged in |
| Child theme | Holds your PHP, CSS and templates outside the parent theme | Every custom line lives here so updates cannot touch it |
Two quirks shape every Astra project. First, the responsive breakpoints are fixed at 921px for tablet and 544px for mobile, and Astra documents only one way to change them: the astra_tablet_breakpoint and astra_mobile_breakpoint PHP filters. No Customizer setting exists. Second, Astra prints its Customizer CSS inline in each page by default, and the current pricing comparison lists CSS file generation as a Pro feature. Both matter when a brand needs a particular layout and a fast first paint.
What we build on Astra, deliverable by deliverable
Here is what typically leaves our hands at the end of an Astra development engagement. Every item is written to a child theme or a small site-specific plugin, versioned, and documented in plain language so the next person, including you, can find it.
Header systems that behave
Desktop, tablet and mobile headers built in the header builder, with Site Builder layouts for the pages that need something different, and breakpoints moved by filter if the design demands it.
Hook-placed components
Trust bars, phone banners, author boxes and lead forms inserted at astra_entry_content_after or astra_footer_before, loaded only on the templates that use them.
Custom templates
Single and archive layouts for custom post types (service areas, team members, case studies) that inherit Astra's containers instead of fighting them.
WooCommerce changes
Product page structure, cart behavior and checkout flow, using Astra Pro's two-step or distraction-free checkout where it fits, and code where it does not. See Astra and WooCommerce.
Integrations
CRM, booking and call-tracking connections written as small, tested functions instead of three more plugins with settings pages.
A lean asset budget
Fonts loaded locally from Astra > Settings > Performance, unused builder assets dequeued, and a before-and-after measurement you can repeat. Our Astra speed guide explains each setting.
What we do not do: edit the parent theme, paste CSS into six different boxes, or install a plugin to solve a problem that ten lines in functions.php solve better. If you only need the site to look like your brand, the lighter service is Astra theme customization.
Astra's 2026 price list is a menu of AI bundles
Before we write code, we sort out the license, because Brainstorm Force's 2026 pricing page reads differently from the one many owners remember. As of October 2026, Astra Pro on its own costs $69 a year or $249 once, and both cover up to 3 websites. Above that sit AI bundles: Astra Pro + AI at an introductory $99 a year (renewing at $149), the Essential Toolkit + AI at $199 for up to 10 sites (renewing at $299), and the Business Toolkit + AI at $279 for up to 1,000 sites (renewing at $429). Each bundle includes the ZipWP AI site-generation platform for 3 years and one to five hosted WordPress sites.
Lifetime versions exist for every tier, and every plan carries a 14-day money-back guarantee. The full breakdown, with what each bundle adds (Spectra Pro, Ultimate Addons for Elementor, SureForms, premium templates), lives on our Astra pricing page.
The third option
Athena CMS, with AI agents on staff.
Not a theme and not a blank Next.js repo. The content system we put behind every custom site: plain fields, a real preview, every version kept, and AI agents that handle the chores a plugin only nags you about.

- ApolloSite analysis
- AresCompetitor watch

and 12 more agents. Two come with Athena; the rest are monthly add-ons.

How an Astra project runs, start to handoff
- 1
Audit the live site
We record the Astra and Astra Pro versions, the license on file, active Site Builder layouts, every plugin's job and where custom CSS is hiding. You get the list whether or not you hire us.
- 2
Copy to staging
All work happens on a private copy. Live visitors never see a half-built header.
- 3
Set the foundation
Child theme created, Customizer settings exported as a backup, global palette and typography set, stray CSS consolidated into one place.
- 4
Build the features
Hooks, templates, WooCommerce changes and integrations, each committed separately so any one can be rolled back.
- 5
Test against updates
We update Astra, Astra Pro and the builder on staging first and check the pages that matter: home, a service page, a post, the cart and checkout.
- 6
Launch and hand over
Changes deploy, and you receive a short document saying where every customization lives and which settings are safe to touch.
What moves the number on an Astra quote
We quote a fixed price after a free site audit, because an hourly estimate on an inherited WordPress site is a guess wearing a tie. The audit tells us what the quote has to cover. These are the things that move it.
- How many layers are fighting. Astra alone is quick to work with. Astra plus Elementor plus a starter template plus an old Custom Layouts setup takes longer to untangle.
- Custom post types and templates. Each new content type means a template, fields and an archive.
- WooCommerce depth. Restyling a product page is small. A custom checkout step with conditional logic is not.
- Integrations. Each outside system has its own API, its own quirks and its own testing.
- Cleanup debt. Theme files edited directly, CSS in five places, plugins nobody can explain.
Larger projects can be spread out through WordPress financing. If the audit shows the site needs repair before it can be built on, we say so and price that separately through WordPress theme repair. Running more than one theme across several sites? Our general WordPress theme development service quotes the same way.
When we will tell you to skip Astra, or skip us
Sometimes the honest answer is that you do not need an Astra developer. If the change is a color, a font or a footer link, the Customizer is built for exactly that, and we will show you where to click. If a starter template already fits your business, use it and keep your money.
Other times the honest answer is that Astra is the wrong foundation. A theme is one layer in a stack of vendors, and some businesses outgrow the stack. We recommend a Next.js build when:
- The site exists to produce leads and every second of load time shows up in the phone log.
- You need hundreds of location or service pages generated from data, not built one by one.
- Members, logins, subscriptions or dashboards are part of the product.
- Three or more integrations have to share data reliably.
- Your team spends more time on update days than on content.
A child theme protects your code from Astra. Nothing protects Astra from the other twenty plugins.
The trade-offs are laid out row by row in Astra vs Next.js, and the move itself, including what happens to Customizer settings and Spectra blocks, is in moving Astra to Next.js. Sites we build on Next.js come with Athena CMS for editing, and the build itself is handled by our Next.js development team. If you are comparing themes before committing, read Astra vs Kadence or start from the theme reviews.
Questions people ask before they call
No. The action hooks exist in the free theme, so a developer can add components from a child theme's functions.php without Pro. Astra Pro's Site Builder puts the same hooks in a dashboard screen with display conditions, which helps when non-developers need to manage those layouts. We choose based on who will maintain the site after we leave.
They will if they live in a child theme or a site plugin and use Astra's hooks and filters rather than copied template files. We also test each Astra update on staging before it reaches the live site. Edits made directly to the parent theme are lost on update, which is why we move them out first. See layouts broken after an Astra update.
Yes. Astra sets the tablet breakpoint at 921px and mobile at 544px, and its documentation describes changing them only with PHP filters (astra_tablet_breakpoint and astra_mobile_breakpoint). We add those filters in the child theme and then retest the header builder, because a moved breakpoint changes when the mobile menu appears. Related: Astra mobile menu not working.
Yes, and it is common. Astra lists Elementor as compatible, but recent forum threads report Astra's article styles leaking into Elementor Loop Grid items and a fatal error in the Astra Elementor integration with Elementor 4.2.1. We pin versions on staging and fix conflicts in code. Our Astra with Elementor page covers the pairing.
It depends on scope, which is why we audit first. A header rebuild and a few hook-placed components is a short project. Custom post types, WooCommerce checkout changes and integrations take longer, mostly in testing. Your fixed quote includes a schedule, and the live site keeps running untouched until launch day.
