Astra Layout Broken After Update: Versions, Containers and the Builder

Astra shipped more than a dozen releases between April and September 2026. Most fixed things. A few, by the vendor's own changelog, broke something the previous one had fixed. If your pages changed shape after an update, the cause is usually a version mismatch, a container setting or a builder that updated on a different day.

The short answer

When an Astra layout breaks after an update, first check that Astra Pro is current, since Astra 4.14.0 expects Pro 4.12.0 or later. Then purge every cache, compare Global > Container settings with each page's own Astra Settings, and test with the builder's latest version. If a 4.13.x regression is to blame, update or roll back on staging.

What changed shape, and what that tells you

Update damage on an Astra site tends to fall into a few recognizable patterns. Before reaching for a rollback, write down which pages broke and which did not. A problem on every page points at the theme, its Pro addon or a cache. A problem on builder pages alone points at the builder. A problem on one template, such as search results or the shop, points at that template's settings.

  • Content squeezed into a narrow column, or stretched edge to edge. Container settings, global or per page.
  • Boxes and backgrounds appeared or vanished. The Container Style setting, Boxed or Unboxed.
  • Elementor grids with odd widths and spacing. A reported Astra article class landing on Elementor Loop Grid items.
  • A white screen or 'critical error' message. A fatal PHP error, often between Astra Pro and the theme, or Astra and a builder.
  • An admin notice asking you to update the Pro addon. The theme and Pro are out of step.
  • Checkout or payment buttons misbehaving. Reported once with 4.13.1 and memory problems; treat it as urgent.

Two update buttons, one site: Astra and Astra Pro

Astra is a free theme from wordpress.org, updated under Appearance > Themes. Astra Pro is a separate plugin, updated only while its license is active. They ship on separate schedules, and the theme sets a floor: Astra 4.14.0 defines a minimum Pro version of 4.12.0 and shows an admin notice asking you to update the addon when it finds an older one. A lapsed license is the usual reason Pro falls behind, covered in Astra Pro license not activating.

Updates also interact with caches in a way that looks like a broken layout. When Pro is installed, a theme update clears Astra's and Astra Pro's generated CSS files. Your page cache does not know that. A cached page can then carry the old version's inline styles while loading the new version's stylesheet, and the two disagree about spacing. Purging every layer is a diagnostic step, not just housekeeping. The Astra CSS not updating guide lists those layers.

The 4.13 series on the record

Some of these come from wordpress.org support threads, some from the changelog that ships with Astra 4.14.0. Together they show where 2026's updates bent things. If your symptom matches, you have your answer and a version to move to.

One more report is not tied to a version: Astra's ast-article-single class being added to Elementor Loop Grid items, changing their width and spacing. If your grids changed after an Elementor or Astra update, inspect an item for that class before rebuilding anything. The Elementor update broke layout notes cover the builder's side.

Container settings that quietly move every page

Astra 4.2.0 replaced the old content layout options with two settings that still decide most widths. Under Global > Container in the Customizer, Container Layout offers Normal, Narrow and Full Width, and Container Style offers Boxed and Unboxed. Container Width and Narrow Container Width set the actual pixel values. Sidebars have their own Boxed or Unboxed style.

Every post and page can override those globals in its Astra Settings panel in the editor, and Astra exposes the same meta settings inside the Elementor editor. Builder pages usually want Full Width and Unboxed so the builder controls the width. Trouble starts when the global setting changes, or a migration rewrites it, and only some pages carry their own override. Half the site moves; the other half holds still. Compare one broken page and one healthy page side by side in their Astra Settings panels.

Woo pages have their own wrinkle. Astra 4.13.9 stopped the Shop page's meta settings, container layout included, from overriding the product search results layout. A shop that relied on that accident looked different the next morning. The Astra WooCommerce guide and the general WooCommerce layout broken page cover store templates.

Putting an Astra layout back without a second outage

  1. 1

    Freeze and copy

Pause further updates, take a full backup and clone the site to staging. Do all testing there.

  2. 2

    Read any error

For a white screen, check the PHP error log or the recovery-mode email WordPress sends. The file path names Astra, Astra Pro or the builder.

  3. 3

    Line up the versions

Update Astra Pro to at least the minimum the theme asks for, and bring the builder to its current release. Retest.

  4. 4

    Purge every cache

Plugin cache, host cache, CDN and, with Pro's File Generation on, its Refresh button. Retest logged out.

  5. 5

    Compare container settings

Check Global > Container, then the Astra Settings panel on a broken page and a healthy one. Set builder pages to Full Width and Unboxed where the builder should own the width.

  6. 6

    Isolate the builder

If only builder pages broke, compare a builder page with a plain block-editor page. Inspect Loop Grid items for Astra classes.

  7. 7

    Roll back if needed

Astra Pro's Version Control tab in the Astra dashboard can roll back the theme and addon. Without Pro, restore the backup or install the earlier release, then report the bug to Brainstorm Force with your versions.

An update routine that catches it on staging

Every problem in the table above would have been caught on a staging copy before a customer saw it. That is the whole prevention plan, plus a few habits that make staging tests worth the time.

  • Update Astra, Astra Pro and the builder together on staging, never one at a time on the live site.
  • Wait a few days after a release on business-critical sites; the 4.13 pattern shows fixes often arrive within a week or two.
  • Keep a test list: home page, a builder page, a post, the shop, a product, the cart and checkout, on a phone and a desktop.
  • Keep the Astra Pro license active so the addon never falls below the theme's minimum.
  • Set container overrides deliberately per template, and note them, instead of fixing widths page by page.

If that routine sounds like a job, it is one. Our hosting and maintenance plans run tested updates with off-server backups, and the theme broke after update guide covers the same ground for any theme. Fonts or menus acting up after an update have their own pages: Astra fonts not loading and Astra mobile menu not working.

A dozen-plus releases in six months, times your plugins

None of this makes Astra careless. A theme on more than a million sites ships often because those sites run every builder and plugin imaginable, and each release fixes somebody's problem. The cost lands on owners: each update is a small bet that the theme, the Pro addon, the builder and the store still agree. Our Astra review weighs that against what the theme does well, and the Astra speed guide shows the performance side.

A Next.js site moves the testing before the deploy. Dependencies are pinned, the build either passes or does not ship, and the layout is code, not settings scattered across a Customizer, page meta and a builder. It costs more up front and needs a developer for structural changes. Astra vs Next.js sets out the trade, Astra to Next.js explains the move, and Athena CMS keeps editing simple. Questions people ask before they call

Not the same number, but they must be compatible. Astra 4.14.0 sets a minimum Astra Pro version of 4.12.0 and shows an admin notice when the addon is older. Update both together on staging, and keep the Pro license active so updates keep arriving. Plans are listed on Astra pricing.

With Astra Pro, the Version Control tab in the Astra dashboard settings rolls back the theme and the addon; the free theme shows that tab only as a Pro feature. Without Pro, restore your backup or install the previous release. Roll back on staging first, then report the bug with your versions.

Usually a container setting. Check Global > Container and the page's own Astra Settings; builder pages generally want Full Width and Unboxed. If grids changed, inspect Loop Grid items for Astra's ast-article-single class, a reported conflict. Our Astra developers can scope a CSS fix.

The latest release as of October 2026 is 4.14.0, from September 24, and it includes the fixes from 4.13.8 through 4.13.12. That does not guarantee your stack. Update on staging with your builder and plugins, run your test list, then update live.

Treat it as an emergency: one owner reported that 4.13.1 caused memory problems that blocked GPay and Apple Pay, and support's first step was a rollback. Roll back on staging, confirm payments work, then restore live. Our WooCommerce checkout fix guide covers other causes.
