Neve vs Astra: Speed Claims, Renewal Bills and Who Gets Unlimited Sites

Themeisle says Neve loaded in 0.6 seconds. Brainstorm Force says Astra loads in 0.5. Both numbers are the vendors' own, and neither describes your site. The useful comparison is what each theme lets you switch off, and what each one charges in year two.

The short answer

Neve suits owners and freelancers who want unlimited sites on every paid plan, free local font hosting and a 30-day refund, provided they budget for renewals at roughly double the first-year price. Astra suits teams who want broad page builder support and a big template library, and who can work within a three-site Pro plan or buy a larger bundle.

Two vendors, two stopwatches, zero real stores

Neve's product page advertises a 28 KB page, a load time of one second, a default install that took 0.6 seconds and a 100 percent grade in PageSpeed Insights. Astra's homepage advertises less than 50 KB of resources and loads of half a second, and says it is fully compatible with HTTP/2. These are the vendors' numbers, measured by the vendors; Neve's page says its figure came from a default install.

That does not make them worthless. A small starting weight is a real advantage, because everything you add later piles on top of it. But a homepage with a hero image, a contact form, an analytics tag and a page builder is a different animal. Both themes start light; what decides your speed is the stack you build, and which theme makes that stack easier to trim. The Neve review and Astra review cover each product in full.

The license row is the sharpest difference. Every Neve plan covers unlimited sites, so the tiers differ by features. Astra's tiers differ by both features and site counts, and its cheapest Pro option stops at three.

Reading the speed claims like a skeptic

A theme's own test usually measures a fresh install with sample content, no plugins and no third-party scripts. That tells you the theme does not get in its own way. It cannot tell you how the theme behaves once Elementor, WooCommerce, a form plugin and a chat widget arrive, which is the page your customers see.

  1. 1

Build one real page in each

Use your own header, hero image, copy and form, on a staging site, with the same plugins active in both installs.

  2. 2

    Match the settings

Turn on local fonts in both, use the same caching plugin, and leave image sizes identical. Note which settings needed a Pro license.

  3. 3

    Test on mobile, several runs

Run each URL through PageSpeed Insights at least three times and compare the individual metrics, not just the score. Our PageSpeed Insights guide explains what each number means.

  4. 4

    Check the waterfall

Count the stylesheets, scripts and font files each theme loads. The lighter list usually stays lighter as the site grows.

To hand the testing to someone else, our theme speed optimization service does exactly this before recommending changes. The fastest WordPress themes roundup explains why we never publish a ranking without a method.

Which performance switches cost extra

Open Neve > Dashboard > Settings > Performance and the first useful switch, Enable Local Fonts Hosting, works without Pro. It even catches Google Fonts that other plugins load, which privacy-minded sites will appreciate. Pro adds three more: Emoji Removal, Embed Removal and Lazy Rendering. The last sets content-visibility: auto on elements below the fold, letting the browser skip their rendering work until a visitor scrolls near them. The Neve speed guide covers each switch.

Astra's settings live under Astra > Settings > Performance, where Load Google Fonts Locally can preload the files. Astra's docs do not say whether that switch is free or Pro, so check your own install. By default, Astra prints its Customizer CSS inside the page; an external CSS file appears as a Pro item in the vendor's current free versus Pro table. The theme's own front-end scripts in 4.14.0 declare no jQuery dependency apart from one WooCommerce script. The Astra speed guide walks through each setting.

If fonts are the problem, both have focused guides: Neve fonts not loading and Astra fonts not loading. When CSS changes refuse to show, Astra CSS not updating covers the inline and file modes.

Year one is the teaser, year two is the price

Themeisle lists Neve Pro at introductory prices as of October 2026: Personal at $69, Business at $149 and Agency at $259 for the first year. The fine print says renewals bill at full price: $139, $299 and $519. No lifetime plan is shown. Every tier covers unlimited sites, and refunds are available for 30 days. The Neve pricing page lists what each tier adds.

Astra mixes models. The Pro add-on alone costs $69 per year or a single $249 payment, both for up to three sites. The bundles start low and climb: $99 for Pro + AI in year one, then $149; $199 for the Essential Toolkit, then $299; $279 for the Business Toolkit, then $429. Lifetime versions run $279, $549 and $799. Refunds are available for 14 days. Tier details sit on the Astra pricing page.

Year one$69$199
Year two$139$299
Two-year total$208$498

The comparison is not quite fair to Astra, whose Essential Toolkit also bundles Spectra Pro, the Ultimate Addons pack for Elementor and premium starter templates. If you would buy those anyway, the gap shrinks. If you only want the theme's Pro features, Neve's unlimited Personal plan is hard to argue with.

The third option

Athena CMS, with AI agents on staff.

Not a theme and not a blank Next.js repo. The content system we put behind every custom site: plain fields, a real preview, every version kept, and AI agents that handle the chores a plugin only nags you about.

and 12 more agents. Two come with Athena; the rest are monthly add-ons.

The Athena CMS editor: plain fields with AI rewrite, a Publish box and revisions

Stores, courses and the features behind each tier

Neve's free theme works with WooCommerce, and the Business plan turns on the WooCommerce Booster: variation swatches, a wishlist, side-by-side product comparison, quick view, sale percentage badges, upsells, advanced reviews and custom thank-you pages. The same tier adds an LMS Booster for course sites. If a shop page goes wrong after an update, see Neve WooCommerce layout broken.

Astra puts its shop extras in Pro from the first paid tier: quantity buttons, add to cart with no page reload, quick view, endless scrolling through products, a sidebar that slides in, more gallery layouts and a two-step checkout without distractions. Neve keeps its store extras one tier up from its entry plan; Astra includes them from the first paid tier. The Astra WooCommerce guide lists every setting.

One practical note for shops on either theme: a store adds WooCommerce scripts, cart fragments and payment plugin code that no theme setting removes. Compare the two themes on a product page and the checkout, not just the homepage, or the lighter theme on paper may lose where it counts.

What the 2026 support threads say about each

  • Neve, iOS Safari: a June 2026 thread traced an unresponsive mobile hamburger to the SiteGround speed optimization plugin. See Neve mobile menu not working.
  • Neve, Customizer: changes that will not save with an expected_array error, traced by staff to a malformed theme_mods_neve option.
  • Neve, editor: editor styles missing after WordPress 7 on Neve 4.2.4, unresolved because staff could not reproduce it. Our Neve repair hub collects fixes.
  • Astra, Customizer: one user measured about 127 seconds for the Customizer under WordPress 7.0 with WooCommerce and Elementor Pro active.
  • Astra, updates: a fatal Astra_Notices error from the Pro add-on after 4.13, and memory problems blamed on 4.13.1. See Astra layout broken after update.

Neither list is a reason to avoid either theme. Both vendors answer on the forums, and both themes ship frequent releases. Together they are a reason to keep a staging copy and update on a weekday morning, not on a Friday night.

Neve or Astra, by the job the site does

Freelancer with many small sites

Neve Personal. Unlimited sites from the cheapest tier, and the renewal is still lower than Astra's bundle for the same count.

Agency built on starter templates

Astra. The Starter Templates plugin and the Business Toolkit's 1,000 sites suit a template-first workflow.

Blog where privacy and fonts matter

Neve, for free local font hosting that also catches fonts from other plugins.

Elementor site with add-ons

Astra, if Ultimate Addons for Elementor is on your list anyway. Neve if you only need the theme.

Small store or course site

Close. Astra Pro adds store features at a lower tier; Neve Business adds both store and LMS boosters.

Other matchups worth reading: OceanWP vs Astra on free tiers and menus, Astra vs GeneratePress on raw lightness, and Astra vs Blocksy. The theme comparisons hub lists the rest.

When shaving kilobytes stops paying off

There is a point where tuning a lightweight theme stops returning anything. The theme is already small. The weight comes from the builder, the tracking scripts, the form plugin and the slider somebody added for a seasonal promotion. If speed is the whole reason you are comparing Neve and Astra, the bigger lever may be the stack itself.

A Next.js site is prerendered, serves images through next/image in modern formats, self-hosts fonts through next/font and sends only the JavaScript a page needs. The price is a bigger build budget and a developer whenever the layout itself changes, which Neve vs Next.js and the Astra equivalent discuss honestly.

Editors keep easy control in Athena CMS, where each page is a set of plain fields with a true preview and a full version history. Argus flags slow pages and failing forms before customers do, and Apollo says which fix to do first. The migration paths are in the Neve migration plan and the Astra one. Questions people ask before they call

Both vendors publish their own numbers: Neve claims a 0.6-second default load and a 28 KB page, Astra claims half a second and under 50 KB. Neither is an independent test of a real site. The honest answer comes from building the same page in both and testing it on mobile several times. Our theme speed test method shows how.

Yes. As of October 2026, all three Neve Pro plans, Personal, Business and Agency, cover unlimited sites. The plans differ by features: WooCommerce and LMS boosters start at Business, and white label and Otter Blocks Pro are on Agency. First-year prices are introductory, and renewals are charged at full price. See the Neve pricing page.

Astra offers lifetime options: $249 for the Pro add-on on up to three sites, and $279 to $799 for its bundles, as of October 2026. Neve's pricing page showed no lifetime plan when we checked. If you dislike renewals, Astra's lifetime Pro is the simpler buy. Compare details on the Astra pricing page.

Neve, the classic theme, is the one most people mean; it runs on more than 200,000 sites. Neve FSE is Themeisle's other product, a block theme with 9,000-plus installs whose last update came in March 2026. Choose Neve FSE only if you want to design in the Site Editor. For most business sites the classic Neve, with its Customizer header builder, is the safer pick. Our Neve review explains both.

Both themes ship often, and recent forum threads show regressions on both sides, from Customizer errors in Neve to fatal errors and memory problems in the Astra 4.13 series. Roll back on staging, find the conflict, and update again once fixed. Our guides on Neve layout broken after update and the theme repair service can help.
