Theme head-to-head
Astra vs Kadence: A Theme for Any Builder, or One Vendor for Everything
Astra wants to sit quietly under whatever page builder you already like. Kadence, since Liquid Web folded three brands into it in May 2026, wants to be the builder, the store, the firewall and the backup as well. That is the real contest here, and it is not a drag race.

The short answer
Pick Astra if your site runs on Elementor or another page builder and you want a well-supported Customizer theme underneath it. Pick Kadence if you build with blocks and like the idea of WooCommerce tools, memberships, security and backups from one vendor. As of October 2026, Astra Pro starts at $69 a year and Kadence plans start at $99 a year.

One theme for every builder, or one vendor for every plugin
Most theme comparisons stage a drag race: two demo sites, two PageSpeed screenshots, a winner by a nose. That format misses what you are actually choosing between Astra and Kadence. Astra is a Customizer theme from Brainstorm Force, built to be the polite floor under someone else's builder. Its pricing page lists Elementor, Beaver Builder, Divi Builder, Brizy, WPBakery, Visual Composer and Thrive Architect as compatible. Kadence is also a Customizer theme, but its own way to build pages is the Kadence Blocks plugin, and its owner now sells most of the rest of the stack around it.
That owner is new. kadencewp.com now redirects to Liquid Web's software pages, documentation sits on a Nexcess domain, and Nexcess is now the named author on wordpress.org. In May 2026 Liquid Web rebranded SolidWP as Kadence Security, absorbed Iconic's WooCommerce plugins as Shop Kit and renamed Restrict Content Pro as Kadence Memberships. So the question is less which theme is quicker and more how many of your plugins you want from one company. Both answers are defensible. They lead to different sites, different invoices and different bad days.
Astra asks which builder you use. Kadence asks how much of your stack it may sell you.
Astra and Kadence across fourteen rows
Every cell below comes from the vendors' own pricing pages, docs and theme files, or from the wordpress.org support forums, all checked on October 6, 2026. Where a vendor does not say something, the table says so instead of guessing. For the full treatment of each theme, read our Astra review and our Kadence review.

Read the last two rows twice. Neither theme is likely to stop working tomorrow. The real risk in each case is what the vendor decides next, and no speed test can measure that. The rest of this page walks through the rows that change the decision most.
Where your layouts live: Astra's Customizer chassis vs Kadence's blocks
Astra keeps nearly everything visual in the WordPress Customizer, which the vendor describes as React based. Colors, typography, container widths, the header and the footer are set there, and the pages themselves are left to whichever tool you bring. Many Astra sites pair it with Elementor or with Spectra, the block builder from the same company. Astra Pro's Site Builder handles custom headers, footers, 404 pages and code hooks. Our notes on Astra with Elementor and Astra in the block editor cover both routes.
Kadence also uses the Customizer for globals and keeps what its docs now call the classic header builder. Its center of gravity, though, is the block editor. Kadence Blocks supplies the layout and advanced blocks, and the Advanced Header and Navigation blocks let you build a header inside the editor instead of the Customizer. Theme Kit Pro adds Hooked Elements (content sections, fixed sections, templates and raw HTML), conditional headers and 20 extra header items. See Kadence in the block editor and the less traveled path of Kadence with Elementor.
What that means for a real site
- An Elementor site with two years of templates: Astra is the natural floor under it. Kadence will run it, but you would be paying for a block toolkit you never open.
- A new site built from patterns: Kadence's blocks and the 200+ starter templates in its Essentials plan get you further before a second vendor is needed.
- An agency standardizing one stack: count licenses first. Astra Pro alone covers three sites; Kadence's per-site footnote is a question for presales.
- A content-heavy blog: either theme works. Your block plugin (Spectra or Kadence Blocks) will shape the editing day more than the theme does.
Since May 2026, a Kadence purchase comes with a corporate org chart
Kadence replaced its add-ons and bundles with three tiers. As of October 2026, Essentials is $99 a year for the theme, 30+ blocks, a form builder, header and mega menus and 200+ starter templates. Pro is $299 and adds Shop Kit for WooCommerce, memberships and subscriptions, a firewall, two-factor login, virtual patching and daily backups. Elite is $499 and adds A/B testing, popups, white label, the Kadence Central client portal and 1,000 emails a month. The page says plans are priced per site, but does not say how many sites each one covers. Our Kadence pricing breakdown tracks the details.
Customers who bought before May 2026 hold grandfathered prices only as long as they keep paying. Miss a renewal and the old rate is gone; getting access back means choosing a new plan. The software keeps running when a license ends; updates, premium help and the premium templates stop. Unhappy buyers can ask for a refund by ticket within 30 days.
Astra's price sheet points somewhere else entirely: artificial intelligence. Astra Pro by itself costs $69 annually, or $249 for a lifetime license, on up to 3 websites. Astra Pro + AI is $99 for year one, then $149. Essential Toolkit + AI is $199 for up to 10 sites, renewing at $299; Business Toolkit + AI is $279 for up to 1000 sites, renewing at $429. Each bundle includes the ZipWP AI platform for three years, hosted WordPress sites and a free domain for a year. Refunds run 14 days. The Astra pricing guide has the lifetime prices for every tier.

Shop pages and phone menus, side by side
For WooCommerce, free Astra gives a store owner a mini cart in the header, a say over shop columns and the order of product elements, and styling for sale badges. Paying for Pro brings the conversion tools: quick view, a checkout in two steps or with distractions removed, plus and minus quantity buttons, add-to-cart without a page reload, endless product scrolling, and zoom on product photos. Kadence's free settings handle single-product layouts, element toggles, a payment-icons row and a store notice. The heavy lifting arrives when a Pro or Elite plan adds Shop Kit: WooThumbs galleries, Flux multi-step checkout, attribute swatches, wishlists, bundles, delivery slots and a product configurator. Compare the detail in Astra for WooCommerce and Kadence for WooCommerce.
Headers split the two in a way demos hide. Astra's free builder gives desktop, tablet and mobile headers, each with above, primary and below rows, plus an off-canvas menu and a transparent header. Its toggle menu switches on at 921px, and changing that means the astra_tablet_breakpoint filter in PHP. Kadence builds two distinct headers, Desktop and Tablet/Mobile, and the mobile one takes over at 1024px and below. A tablet held sideways at exactly 1024 pixels gets the phone header. Neither theme documents a breakpoint setting in its Customizer.
Both have drawn the same unnerving bug report recently: a hamburger that opens an empty drawer. If that is your morning, start with Astra's mobile menu fixes or Kadence header builder mobile issues.
The 2026 support threads, read so you do not have to
Astra, from the wordpress.org forum
- One owner clocked the Customizer at roughly 127 seconds, never finishing, on WordPress 7.0 while running Astra 4.13.x next to WooCommerce and Elementor Pro.
- Pairing Astra 4.13.7 with Elementor 4.2.1 crashed the Elementor editor; the fatal error pointed at class-astra-elementor.php.
- After 4.13, one site's Astra Pro addon died on a missing Astra_Notices class; another owner blamed 4.13.1 for memory trouble that blocked GPay and Apple Pay. Support began by rolling back.
- Astra's ast-article-single class turned up on Elementor Loop Grid items, altering their width and spacing.
Kadence, from the wordpress.org forum
- Version 1.5.1 drew a report of a phone drawer that slid open empty, though menus were set for every location.
- On 1.5.2, the Scroll To Top button sat dead because its script file, scroll-up.min.js, came back as a 404.
- One owner says a Kadence Blocks update wiped internal links from posts, and their lifetime license read UNKNOWN with six tickets unanswered for six days.
- After Patchstack reported an SQL injection flaw affecting Shop Kit up to 3.0.6, owners on legacy licenses who asked how to patch were redirected to Liquid Web's software desk.
Forum threads are anecdotes, not failure rates. They do show where each theme's risk lives. Astra's comes from its many seams with builders and WordPress releases. Kadence's comes from a company reorganizing around it. When a seam does split, our Astra repair hub and Kadence repair hub collect the fixes, along with guides for an Astra layout broken after an update and a Kadence site that slowed down after an update.
Pick by the site you run, not the demo you liked
Astra is for
Owners and agencies whose pages live in Elementor, Beaver Builder or Divi Builder, who want a mature Customizer theme with a free header builder, a huge starter template library and the option to pay once with a lifetime license.
Kadence is for
Block-editor builders who want a strong free theme now and might later buy WooCommerce tools, memberships, security and backups from a single vendor, and who are comfortable with that vendor being a hosting company.
| Better pick | Why | |
|---|---|---|
| Elementor brochure site | Astra | Built to sit under page builders; toolkits include Ultimate Addons for Elementor |
| Block-built marketing site | Kadence | Kadence Blocks, the Advanced Header block and 200+ starter templates |
| Store with variable products | Kadence Pro plan | Shop Kit covers swatches, wishlists and bundles that Astra Pro does not list |
| Small store on a tight budget | Astra Pro | $69 a year adds quick view and 2-step checkout |
| Membership or subscription site | Kadence Pro plan | Memberships and subscriptions are part of the plan |
| Agency running many client sites | Astra Business Toolkit | States up to 1000 sites; Kadence does not publish counts |
| Owner who wants fewer vendors | Kadence | Store, security and backups under one login, with one company to depend on |

Lead engines, portals and spikes: where both themes run out
Both themes solve one problem well: making WordPress look good without hiring a developer. If your problem is a different one, neither is the fix. Think of a site that generates leads from hundreds of service-area pages, a quote form with real logic, a customer portal, or traffic spikes that cannot be allowed to slow checkout. Every module Kadence's Pro plan bundles and every add-on Astra invites under Elementor still updates live, on the production server, on its own schedule.
Next.js treats the whole site as a single tested project. Each page can be rendered ahead of time and delivered from a CDN; React Server Components keep most code off the visitor's phone; next/image resizes pictures and next/font hosts type on your own domain. There are npm packages, of course, but they are version-locked and must survive a build before they reach visitors. The costs are real: a bigger first invoice and a developer whenever the structure changes. The row-by-row cases are in Astra vs Next.js and Kadence vs Next.js.
Kadence's pitch is one vendor for everything. Athena CMS, the content system included with every site we build, makes the same promise without the plugins: plain editing fields, a genuine preview, a history that keeps every version, built-in e-commerce, and membership areas with Stripe subscription billing. Aegis checks daily for intrusions and backdoors, and Argus keeps an eye on links, forms and certificates. The move itself is mapped in Astra to Next.js and Kadence to Next.js. Staying put? Our theme speed optimization and hosting and maintenance plans keep either theme in shape. Not sure? Start with a free site audit.
Questions people ask before they call
Neither vendor publishes a benchmark you can compare. Astra's homepage cites a 0.5 second load and a footprint under 50 KB; Kadence promises clean, efficient code. Both keep jQuery out of their front-end scripts except for WooCommerce. Real speed depends on your builder and plugins, so test your own templates. Our Astra speed guide and Kadence speed guide list the settings that matter.
Liquid Web. The software arm, Liquid Web Software, sits under Liquid Web, LLC by Nexcess Corp., and visiting kadencewp.com now lands you on a liquidweb.com page. The May 2026 reshuffle turned SolidWP into Kadence Security, Iconic into Shop Kit and Restrict Content Pro into Kadence Memberships. Day to day, that means one company for theme, blocks, store add-ons and security.
Partly. Posts, pages and media stay. Customizer settings do not carry over, so colors, typography and the whole header must be rebuilt in Kadence. Pages built in Elementor keep working while Elementor stays installed. Pages built with Spectra keep working only while Spectra stays active. Plan a staging copy and a day of header work at minimum.
In October 2026 terms, the standalone Astra Pro license stops at 3 websites, the Essential Toolkit + AI reaches 10 and the Business Toolkit + AI reaches 1000. Kadence's pricing page says plans are priced per site but does not state a site count for Essentials, Pro or Elite, so ask presales before buying for client work.
Astra refunds any plan in full within 14 days, no questions asked. Kadence's terms offer refunds to unsatisfied customers for up to 30 days after purchase, requested through a support ticket. If a license will not activate, sort that out inside the window.
