Theme repair service
WordPress Theme Repair for Failed Updates, Lost Styles and Dead Licenses
The update bar stopped halfway. Or the license lapsed, the theme fell two years behind, and the host moved you to a newer PHP last night. Theme repair means putting the install back together: the right files, the right versions, and your customizations still standing.

The short answer
WordPress theme repair restores a damaged theme installation: a failed or half-applied update, a layout broken by a new version, lost customizations, a missing child theme, an expired license or a PHP version the theme cannot run on. DataCram backs up the site, repairs it on staging, reapplies your changes safely and hands back a theme you can update again.

Six ways a theme install comes apart
Theme repair starts where the problem is already known: something about the theme itself is damaged. These are the six cases we see, roughly in the order the phone rings about them. Each has a free guide, and each has a point where a guide stops being enough.
A half-finished update
The update stopped mid-copy, leaving the site stuck on briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance or the dashboard insisting another update is in progress.
A layout broken by a new version
The update finished and the site changed. Blocksy 2.1.50 broke some WooCommerce product pages; Hello Elementor 3.3.0 was reported to break mobile navigation. See Astra layout broken after an update for one theme's version.
Customizations wiped out
Someone edited the parent theme's files. The update replaced them, and months of changes went with it.
A missing or broken child theme
The child theme was deleted, never existed, or loads nothing. The first official Hello Biz child theme shipped with the wrong stylesheet dependency.
An expired license
Updates stopped, the theme fell behind WordPress, and the security fixes stopped with them.
A PHP version the theme cannot run
The host upgraded PHP, and the theme or the builder bundled inside it throws fatal errors.
The first hour: getting the site back
When the site is down, diagnosis waits. The first job is a full backup of files and database exactly as they are, broken state included, because that state is evidence. Then we bring the site back by the shortest safe route: clearing a stuck maintenance file, rolling the theme back to its last working version, or switching briefly to a default theme so visitors see a page instead of an error.
- White screen of death: usually a PHP fatal error, and WordPress's recovery mode email often names the file responsible.
- Memory exhausted: heavy themes and builders reach the PHP memory limit first.
- 500 internal server error: WoodMart's docs trace these to server limits and recommend PHP 8.3 or later with a 256M memory limit.
- Theme broke after an update: the general recovery steps for any theme.
These guides are free, and many owners fix the simple cases on their own. When the quick route fails, or the store is losing orders while you read, that is the moment to call (210) 346-0848.
Rescuing edits that were made inside the parent theme
The most delicate repair is recovering customizations from a theme that was edited directly. Nobody kept notes, the person who made the changes is long gone, and the update that would close a security hole will erase them. We do not guess. We download a clean copy of the exact version you have installed and compare the two, file by file. Every difference is a customization, an old hack or damage, and each goes into its own pile.
Customizations move into a child theme as clean overrides or hooks. Hacks that patched old bugs are dropped once the update fixes those bugs properly. Damage, including the occasional injected script, is removed; if we find signs of an intrusion, it becomes a malware removal job before anything else. Then the parent theme updates, and your changes survive because they no longer live in it.
Your changes belong somewhere the next update cannot reach.
Expired licenses and the updates you stopped getting
A lapsed theme license rarely breaks a site on the day it expires. It breaks it later, quietly. Updates stop, WordPress and PHP move on, and one day the theme is several versions behind with a published vulnerability. Security releases are routine: Avada 7.16.2, released September 30, 2026, patched six vulnerabilities, and recent Newspaper releases are mostly fixes for cross-site scripting.
- Avada needs Avada Core and Avada Builder kept in step with the theme, and the vendor says an Envato token stays valid for only 10 days after updating before a purchase code is required. See Avada update problems.
- Flatsome allows one registration per purchase code, so a moved or cloned site reports the code is already registered elsewhere until the old domain is released. See Flatsome registration problems.
- Kadence customers on older plans who let a subscription lapse must buy one of the new 2026 plans to regain access, according to the vendor. See Kadence Pro license problems.
- Divi and Astra Pro tie updates to an API or license key. See Divi update failed: API key and Astra Pro license not activating.
We repair with the license you own. If renewing is the cheapest fix, we say so plainly. We never install nulled copies of premium themes, because pirated theme files are a common way malware gets into a site.
The third option
Athena CMS, with AI agents on staff.
Not a theme and not a blank Next.js repo. The content system we put behind every custom site: plain fields, a real preview, every version kept, and AI agents that handle the chores a plugin only nags you about.

- ApolloSite analysis
- AresCompetitor watch
- PrometheusContent holes
- AtlasPage depth and structure
- DelphiAI search visibility
and 12 more agents. Two come with Athena; the rest are monthly add-ons.

When the host upgrades PHP and the theme cannot follow
Hosts retire old PHP versions on their own schedule, and themes that are behind on updates fail first. The record is public. Newspaper 12.6 required PHP 8.0 and left some sites with blank pages until they upgraded or rolled back. Elegant Themes lists PHP below 7.4 among the reasons the Divi builder will not load. Bricks had a critical error in one element on PHP 7.4. Builders bundled inside a theme, such as WPBakery, often update only when the theme does, which is how old copies end up throwing PHP 8 errors.
The repair depends on what the logs say. If a newer theme version exists, we apply it on staging and fix whatever it changes. If the theme is abandoned, we patch the specific incompatible code and tell you plainly that this buys time, not a future. Holding the site on an old PHP version is a last resort, measured in days. The guide to a site broken after a PHP update covers the first checks.

You get a record of what broke, what changed and what to check before the next update.
Repair guides for the theme you run
Our WordPress repair hub covers repairs of every kind, and the popular themes each have a repair page built around their known failure points: Astra, Divi, Elementor, Avada, Flatsome, GeneratePress, Kadence, WoodMart and Newspaper.
Not sure the theme is damaged at all? If the site is behaving oddly but nothing obviously failed, start with theme troubleshooting, which finds the layer at fault before anything gets repaired. A plugin, a cache or the host is often the real cause, and the free troubleshooting guides walk through the checks.
Repair it, or stop paying to repair it
Most theme repairs are worth doing. A sound theme with one bad update or one lost child theme is a short, contained job. But some sites come back every few months with a fresh break, a theme its vendor has stopped developing, or a license model that changed under the owner's feet. Repairing those is paying rent on a problem, and we will say so.
When that is the pattern, we lay out the alternatives with their costs: a move to a better-maintained theme through our theme migration service, or a Next.js rebuild with Athena CMS so there is no theme left to break. A repair quote depends on the extent of the damage, the number of edited files, whether a store is involved and how far behind the versions are. It is fixed after a free site audit, and WordPress financing is available. To compare themes before deciding, start with the theme reviews.
Questions people ask before they call
Yes, using the copy you already have. Getting the site working again rarely needs a license. Bringing the theme up to date does, because updates come from the vendor. We tell you whether renewing or patching is cheaper in your case, and we never install nulled premium themes, which often carry malware.
Not if they still exist somewhere: in the database, in the current files or in a backup. We compare the installed theme with a clean copy, recover every change we find and move it into a child theme, so the next update cannot erase it. If an update has already overwritten them, older backups are the first place we look.
Call (210) 346-0848 and say the site is down. Stop clicking update or reinstalling plugins, since each attempt can overwrite evidence. If you can, note the last thing that changed. Our first step is a backup of the broken state, then getting the site back online before the full repair begins.
Often, as a stopgap. Rolling back usually restores the look, and vendor support suggested it for some Astra 4.13 problems. But it can leave you on a version with known security issues, and database changes made by the newer version do not always reverse cleanly. We roll back on staging first and plan the forward fix.
Yes. Themes sold on ThemeForest come with required or bundled plugins, purchase code registration and their own update routes, which is where many repairs begin. We work with the purchase code you own and keep the theme and its required plugins, such as WoodMart Core or Avada Core, in step. Theme-specific notes are on the WoodMart repair page.
