Two Elementor foundations

Astra vs Hello Elementor: How Much Theme Should Sit Under Elementor?

Two Elementor sites can look identical and rest on opposite ideas. One sits on Hello, a theme that does almost nothing on purpose. The other sits on Astra, which brings its own header builder, shop settings and paid add-ons. The foundation you pour decides who draws your header and who sends you the invoice.

The short answer

Choose Hello Elementor if you own Elementor Pro and will design every header, footer and template in its Theme Builder. Choose Astra if you want a free header builder, WooCommerce controls and blog layouts from the theme, with free Elementor handling page content. Hello is free; Astra Pro costs $69 a year as of October 2026.

Two answers to one question: how much theme does Elementor need?

Elementor's answer is: almost none. Its Hello theme, which the company calls 'the forever-free Elementor theme', ships with only basic browser compatibility styling and leaves every visible decision to the builder. Version 3.5.1 landed on August 25, 2026, and wordpress.org counts more than a million active installs. On sites hosted by Elementor, Hello is switched on automatically during setup. The vendor's pitch is that you will never hit compatibility trouble with the Elementor editor or Theme Builder, because the theme was made for nothing else.

Brainstorm Force answers differently. Astra is a generalist that counts Elementor as one supported builder among many. The free theme brings a drag-and-drop header and footer builder, blog layouts and WooCommerce settings in the Customizer. The paid tiers go further, and the bigger bundles even include Ultimate Addons for Elementor, a widget pack built for the very builder Hello was designed around. Astra sells the furniture around Elementor. Hello hands Elementor the whole house.

The rows that split these two are the header, the shop and the bill. Everything else, including speed, depends more on how you use Elementor than on which theme sits beneath it. Our theme comparisons section ranks those differences the same way for every pairing.

Who draws the header: Astra's Customizer or Elementor's Theme Builder

Hello does ship a header, a plain one. You set it in Elementor's Site Settings under Hello Theme Header. Menu Layout is either Horizontal or Dropdown, and the dropdown Breakpoint can be Mobile, Tablet (the default) or None, following the site's active Elementor breakpoints. That is the full list of controls. Most Hello sites tick 'Disable theme header & footer' and build replacements in the Elementor Pro Theme Builder, which is the moment Hello's price tag stops describing the real cost.

Astra puts a full header builder in the free theme. Desktop, tablet and mobile each get above, primary and below rows, with an off-canvas mobile menu and a transparent header option. Astra Pro adds sticky header options and a mega menu that can pull in Elementor templates; the free theme already offers dropdown, flyout and full-screen mobile menus. The weak spot is breakpoints: the tablet toggle switches on at 921px and the mobile layout at 544px, and changing either takes the astra_tablet_breakpoint or astra_mobile_breakpoint PHP filter.

When a header disappears or a phone menu refuses to open, the fix depends on which system drew it. Start with Hello header and footer not showing or Hello mobile menu not working. On Astra, the header builder repair guide walks through the usual suspects.

A free theme is not a free site

Hello costs nothing, and Elementor says there is no paid tier of the theme. The spending happens one layer up. Custom headers, footers, archive templates and WooCommerce product, cart and checkout layouts belong to Elementor Pro, which Elementor sells as yearly plans by number of sites, with a 30-day money-back guarantee that applies only to annual plans. Plan prices change often and we did not verify them, so check Elementor's pricing page before you budget.

Astra's free theme covers a surprising share of that ground on its own: the header, the footer, the blog archive and the basic shop frame. That leaves free Elementor to handle page content. If you want more, Astra Pro is $69 a year for up to three sites or $249 for a lifetime license, as of October 2026. The Essential Toolkit at $199, renewing at $299, adds Ultimate Addons for Elementor and Spectra Pro for ten sites. The Astra pricing page lists every tier and renewal.

Picture a hypothetical five-page site for a landscaping company with a custom header and a contact form. On Astra, the free theme plus free Elementor can carry it without a single license, if the free form options are enough. On Hello, a custom header means Elementor Pro from day one. For a large site already built on Elementor Pro, the math reverses: you are paying for the Theme Builder anyway, and Astra's extras would duplicate it.

Trouble at the seam between theme and builder

Astra under Elementor

Two companies shipping on two schedules will sometimes disagree. Astra 4.13.7 with Elementor 4.2.1 produced a fatal error in class-astra-elementor.php, 'Call to undefined method WP_Error::get_data()', which broke the Elementor editor. Another thread found Astra's ast-article-single class attached to Elementor Loop Grid items, quietly changing their width and spacing on the live site. Under WordPress 7.0, one user with Astra 4.13.x, WooCommerce and Elementor Pro timed the Customizer at about 127 seconds before giving up. Saving trouble there has its own fix: Astra Customizer not saving.

Hello under Elementor

Sharing a vendor does not make Hello immune. Users report a flash of unstyled content across several sites running Hello with Elementor Pro. Hello prints the excerpt as a meta description, duplicating the one from Rank Math or Yoast until you flip the Hello setting or use the hello_elementor_description_meta_tag filter. Version 3.3.0 broke mobile navigation for some sites, and Customizer saves failed for users of Elementor 4.0.8 with Hello 3.4.7. On wordpress.org, Elementor Pro owners are told to open tickets at my.elementor.com instead.

If you cannot tell whether the theme or the builder is at fault, our guide to Elementor theme conflicts shows how to isolate it, and the Elementor repair hub covers layouts broken by an update. Our theme troubleshooting service takes over when the afternoon runs out.

The theme's kilobytes, and Elementor's

Elementor cannot settle on Hello's size. Its help center says the theme uses '6KB of resources'; the product page says 'under 30KB' and claims a load in about a quarter of a second. The 3.5.1 package itself contains reset.css at 5,829 bytes, theme.css at 5,827 bytes and header-footer.css at 7,534 bytes. A settings page can deregister the first two and disable the theme header and footer, which drops their CSS and scripts too. Hosting fonts locally is not a theme setting.

Astra's homepage claims less than 50 KB of resources. Its Customizer output arrives as CSS printed inline in each page, while a separate CSS file is listed among Pro features, and a 'Load Google Fonts Locally' option sits under Astra > Settings > Performance. On an Astra site, header styling comes from the theme and content styling from Elementor, so two systems write CSS for one page. On Hello, Elementor writes nearly all of it.

Either way, the theme is the smallest thing on the page. Elementor's widgets, fonts and scripts make up most of the weight, which is why a theme swap rarely rescues a slow Elementor site. Measure before you blame anyone. The Hello speed guide, the Astra speed guide and Elementor slow website fixes cover the levers that actually move.

Shops and blog posts, the jobs Elementor may not own

Elementor's FAQ says Hello 'fully supports WooCommerce', and that is true in the narrow sense: the theme adds no shop options of its own, so product, cart and checkout design falls to Elementor's WooCommerce tools. Threads also report a 'WC Doing It Wrong' notice and deprecated-template warnings after WooCommerce updates. Astra gives a store a dropdown header cart, shop column and product structure controls for free, then quick view, AJAX add to cart, quantity buttons and a distraction-free checkout in Pro. Details are in Astra with WooCommerce.

Blog posts are the other gap. Plenty of Elementor sites still write articles in the block editor. Astra is listed as compatible and pairs naturally with Spectra; see Astra and Gutenberg. Hello ships a theme.json, but support threads describe block styles not loading and missing Block Inspector tabs. If your writers live in the block editor while your designers live in Elementor, Astra serves both teams with less friction. For more on running Elementor over Astra, read Astra with Elementor.

Matching the base theme to the Elementor site you run

Hello is for you if

You already own Elementor Pro, your team builds every template in the Theme Builder, and you want one vendor responsible for everything a visitor sees. Agencies standardized on Elementor tend to land here.

Astra is for you if

You use free Elementor, want a header and shop settings without buying the Theme Builder, publish blog posts in the block editor, or want the freedom to drop Elementor later without switching themes.

Still undecided about the builder itself? Divi vs Elementor and Bricks vs Elementor weigh the alternatives, and Astra vs Divi covers Astra against an all-in-one suite. If you prefer another lightweight base, see Kadence with Elementor or GeneratePress with Elementor.

When Elementor itself is the part to replace

Swapping Astra for Hello, or Hello for Astra, changes a few kilobytes and a settings panel. It does not change the builder's nested markup, its editor that slows as pages grow, or the yearly renewal that keeps the Theme Builder alive. If those are the complaints, the comparison you need is Hello Elementor vs Next.js or Astra vs Next.js.

On Next.js, layout lives in code that a developer writes once and tests before release. Pages are generated ahead of time and served from a CDN, React Server Components keep browser JavaScript small, and nothing on the live server updates itself overnight. The honest costs: a bigger first invoice, and a developer for structural changes. Getting there is laid out in Elementor to Next.js and Hello Elementor to Next.js, and our Next.js rebuild service keeps every old URL redirected.

Teams raised on drag and drop usually ask one thing: who edits the site afterward? With Athena CMS, your staff edit plain fields with a live preview, and every version is kept. Atlas flags thin and orphaned pages, Iris writes search titles and social cards, and Harmonia drafts Spanish versions and checks accessibility, each waiting for approval. If you would rather keep Elementor and make it behave, our Elementor developers do that too.

Questions people ask before they call

Hello sends less theme code: three small stylesheets, two of which can be switched off. Astra sends a little more, mostly inline Customizer CSS. On a real Elementor site, though, the builder's own CSS and scripts outweigh either theme, so the gap you measure usually comes from Elementor settings, images and plugins. Test your own pages before switching for speed alone.

Not to build pages, but usually to build a site. Hello's own header offers a horizontal or dropdown menu and little else. Custom headers, footers, archive templates and WooCommerce page layouts come from Elementor Pro's Theme Builder. If you want those without Elementor Pro, Astra's free header builder and shop settings are the cheaper route.

Usually, yes. Elementor stores page layouts itself, so content generally survives a theme switch. Header settings, widths and spacing may shift, and Astra's article class has been reported to change Elementor Loop Grid layouts. Make the switch on a staging copy, check every template and archive, and read our Elementor theme conflict guide before going live.

It depends on who designs the shop. If you will design product, cart and checkout pages in Elementor Pro's WooCommerce builder, Hello stays out of the way. If you want good default shop pages with options like quick view and a two-step checkout, Astra Pro provides them without template work. See Astra with WooCommerce.

Hello can output a post's excerpt as a meta description, and your SEO plugin adds its own. Search engines then see two. Turn off the description option in Hello's settings page, or use the hello_elementor_description_meta_tag filter, and let Rank Math or Yoast own the tag. Check the page source afterward to confirm only one remains.
