Step 3 of 9 · Google Maps Problems
Why Is My Business Not Showing Up on Google Maps?
The map pack is three businesses and a phone button. For a local service company it is often worth more than the whole first page of results, and it runs on different rules.

Signs you have a maps problem
- Customers say they cannot find you on the map
- You appear on the map, but only when someone searches your name
- You show up in one part of town and disappear two miles away
- Your Business Profile was suspended or says 'not verified'
- Calls from the profile dropped though nothing changed
- A competitor with fewer reviews sits above you
What usually causes it
Most common first, each with a way to check it yourself.
- 1
The primary category is wrong
The single biggest lever on the map. A plumber listed as 'Contractor' competes in the wrong race.
Check it: Open your Business Profile and read the primary category. It should name what customers search for, as precisely as the list allows.
- 2
Distance from the searcher
The map shows businesses near the person searching. You cannot move that, but a strong profile reaches farther than a weak one.
Check it: Search your service from a phone at your office and again from across town. Note where you drop off.
- 3
Reviews have gone quiet
It is not only the count. Recent reviews, replies to them, and reviews that mention your services and towns all count.
Check it: Look at the date of your newest review. If it is more than a month old, this is part of the problem.
- 4
Your details do not match across the web
A different phone number on Yelp, an old address in a directory, a different business name on your website. Mismatches make Google unsure you are one business.
Check it: Search your business name and phone number. Every listing should show the same name, address and phone.
- 5
A suspension or a verification problem
Keyword stuffing in the business name, a virtual office address, or a sudden change to key details can trigger a suspension.
Check it: Log in to your profile. A warning banner at the top tells you if Google has restricted it.
Do this today
Reply to your last ten reviews today, including the good ones. It takes twenty minutes, it signals an active business, and future customers read the replies.
How we diagnose it
- 1
Grid the map
We check where you appear across a grid of points around your service area, so you see exactly where the map stops showing you.
- 2
Audit the profile
Categories, services, hours, photos, description, attributes and posts, against the three businesses that beat you.
- 3
Check consistency
Your name, address and phone across the directories that matter for your trade.
- 4
Read the reviews
Recency, volume, replies and what the reviews actually say compared with the competition.
What the fix looks like
Correct the profile
The right primary and secondary categories, complete services, real photos and hours that match reality.
Clean up the listings
Fix mismatched details across directories so Google sees one consistent business.
Start a review rhythm
A simple after-the-job text that asks for a review, and replies to every review, good or bad.
Support it from the website
Pages for the service areas you want to win, linked from the profile, with your details marked up for search engines.
When to bring someone in
If the profile is suspended, get help before you edit anything; changes during a suspension can make it worse. If you are simply ranking low, you can fix categories and start asking for reviews yourself this week.

Frequently asked
Because the map favors businesses close to the searcher. A stronger profile, with the right category, recent reviews and consistent details, pushes that radius out, but no one can make you appear everywhere.
Enough to compare well with the businesses above you, and a steady flow of new ones. Five new reviews a month often beats two hundred old ones.
No. Adding 'Best Plumber Austin' to your name breaks Google's guidelines and is a common reason for suspension. Use your real business name.
Yes. Service-area businesses can hide their address and list the areas they serve. You still need a real, verifiable business location.
Category and profile fixes can move you within two to four weeks. Review and consistency work builds over two to three months.
