Astra fix

Astra Pro License Not Activating, or Pro Features Stopped?

Two different problems get reported as 'Astra Pro stopped working'. One is the license: a key that will not activate or updates that will not download. The other is a module switched off, the add-on deactivated or the theme and Pro grown apart, and no key will fix that.

What you are seeing

  • The license field rejects a key you are sure is right
  • Plugins lists an Astra Pro update that fails to download
  • The mega menu, sticky header or a custom layout stopped appearing
  • Premium Starter Templates will not import
  • Nobody knows which account bought the license

Why it happens on Astra

Most common first.

  1. 1

The key belongs to a different product or account

A Brainstorm Force store account can hold separate keys for Astra Pro, Premium Starter Templates and other plugins. Pasting the wrong one produces a rejection that reads like a typo, and so does a key copied with a trailing space. The right key, meanwhile, tends to live in the inbox of someone who no longer works there.

  2. 2

The site cannot reach the license server

Activation is a request from your server to Brainstorm Force's. Hosts that restrict outbound connections, and security plugins that filter them, stop that request before it leaves. The form then fails however correct the key is.

  3. 3

The license is registered to another address

Activations are recorded against a site address. A key first used on a staging domain, an old domain or a cloned copy may still be counted there, and a plan with a site limit will refuse the next one. The licenses page in the store account shows where each key is in use.

  4. 4

The license lapsed and nobody noticed

After expiry Astra Pro goes on running, which is exactly why a lapse escapes attention. What ends is the update feed, support and access to premium templates. Months later the free theme has moved on, and a Pro module written for an earlier theme starts misbehaving in ways that pass for bugs.

  5. 5

The feature is off, not unlicensed

Astra Pro is a set of modules, each with its own switch in the Astra dashboard: Sticky Header, Nav Menu, Site Builder, WooCommerce and others. A module deactivated during troubleshooting, or the whole add-on left inactive after a failed update, removes the feature with the license in perfect order. Pro also needs Astra or an Astra child theme as the active theme.

How to fix it, in order

Least invasive first. Stop at the step that fixes it.

  1. 1

Find the purchase and the key

Log in to the Brainstorm Force store account that bought Astra Pro and open its licenses page. Note the key issued for Astra Pro specifically, its expiry date and the sites it is active on. If the account belonged to a former developer, recover it now or plan to hold the next license in your own name.

  2. 2

Confirm the add-on is installed, active and matched

In Plugins, check that Astra Pro is active. In Appearance, Themes, check that Astra or its child theme is the active theme. If WordPress shows a notice that Pro requires a newer theme version, update the free theme first.

  3. 3

Check the module switches before blaming the license

Open the Astra dashboard in wp-admin and review the list of Pro modules. Reactivate any module whose feature went missing, then reload the page that lost it. If the feature returns, the license was never the problem.

  4. 4

    Activate with a clean paste

Open the license form from the Astra dashboard or from the license link beneath Astra Pro on the Plugins screen. Paste the key with no spaces before or after. If the site was cloned from another, deactivate the license first and activate again, so the current address is the one on record.

  5. 5

Release activations you no longer use

If the store reports the limit reached, deactivate the key for old staging and development addresses from the account, then retry on the live site.

  6. 6

Test the connection, and update by hand if you must

Pause security plugins and try once more. If nothing changes, ask the host whether outbound requests from the server are filtered. For an overdue update, download the current Astra Pro zip from the store account and install it on a staging copy first, through Plugins, Add New, Upload.

Keep it from coming back

  • Hold the license in an account the business owns, on a shared mailbox
  • Put the renewal date on a calendar somebody reads
  • Update Astra and Astra Pro together, never one alone
  • Deactivate the key on staging sites before deleting them

The permanent fix

A faster Next.js build, with a CMS made for your business

A lapsed key is an errand, not a reason to rebuild. But if the site depends on a paid theme add-on, a paid builder and several paid extensions, each with its own renewal and its own account, the design is rented from several vendors and falters when any one payment is missed. A Next.js site with a custom CMS has no license server to call: the header, the mega menu and the layouts are your own code, and they keep working whether or not anyone remembers a renewal date.

Frequently asked

No. The add-on keeps running with the settings it has. Updates, support and premium template access stop, and the risk builds slowly as the free theme moves ahead of a Pro version that cannot follow. Renew or remove Pro deliberately instead of leaving it to age.

Check three things. The key must be the one issued for Astra Pro, not for another product in the same account. It must be pasted without stray spaces. And your server must be able to reach the license server, which a firewall or a host restriction can prevent. If all three hold, the key may be at its site limit.

Astra Pro can be white-labeled, so an agency may have renamed the theme and the add-on to its own brand. Look for a plugin described as an add-on for your renamed theme. In that arrangement the agency that built the site usually holds the license, and the key is theirs to share or transfer.

No. Copies offered outside the official store are a well-known way for malicious code to reach a site, and they receive no updates. If one is installed, replace it with a clean copy from the store and have the site checked. Our malware removal guide explains what to look for.
