Free tier face-off
Astra vs Blocksy: How Far Each Free Theme Goes Before You Pay
Both themes are free to download, and both would like you to pay eventually. The useful question is how much website you can build before that moment, and what the bill looks like when it arrives. On that test Astra and Blocksy part ways more than their demos let on.

The short answer
Blocksy gives more away free: a header builder with cart and account elements, CSS output as a file, and local gravatars, though many features rely on its free Companion plugin. Astra brings a larger install base and wider page-builder support. Paid, Blocksy starts at $69 a year for 1 site and Astra Pro at $69 a year for 3 sites, as of October 2026.

Two free downloads, two very different meters
On wordpress.org the scoreboard looks lopsided. Astra has 1,000,000+ active installs and 26.79 million downloads. Blocksy has 300,000+ active installs, a perfect 100 out of 100 from 873 ratings, and the freshest release of the pair, version 2.1.58 on October 2, 2026. Both are classic Customizer themes with header builders, and both list Elementor and the block editor as supported. So the difference that matters is not popularity. It is where each vendor draws the paywall, and how it splits features between theme and plugin.
Astra's model is a free theme, a paid Astra Pro plugin and a free Starter Templates plugin for demo imports. Blocksy's free theme leans on the free Blocksy Companion plugin, also at 300,000+ installs, which Blocksy Pro then extends. A free Blocksy site therefore already runs two packages from CreativeThemes, and an update to either one can move your layout. That is not a flaw. It is a fact to plan around, the way you plan around a car that needs premium fuel.
Free is a price like any other. Each vendor simply decides what it buys.

Notice which rows run in Blocksy's favor on price and which run in Astra's favor on reach. The sections below take the free tier, the lifetime math, the store and the header in turn.
What you can build without a credit card
Astra, free
- A visual header and footer builder, laid out separately for desktop, tablet and mobile.
- A slide-out phone menu and a see-through header for hero images.
- Store basics in the free theme: a cart in the header, sale badge styles, a column count for the shop and control over product layout.
- Demo imports through the Starter Templates plugin, itself at 1,000,000+ installs.
- Works under nearly any page builder you already own.
Blocksy, free (with Companion)
- Header builder with Account, Button, Cart, HTML, Logo, menus, Search, Socials and Trigger elements.
- Dynamic CSS written to a file, which the docs recommend, or printed inline.
- Switches to disable the emoji script, store gravatars locally and lazy load theme images.
- Customizer options for shop and product pages.
- Free starter sites for Gutenberg and Elementor; the pro set starts at the Business tier.
Tally it up. Blocksy's free Performance panel does more of the tidying a speed plugin would otherwise do, and its free header includes cart and account elements. Astra's free WooCommerce controls are a little more specific, and its builder reach is wider. Where Blocksy charges: Local Google Fonts, conditional headers, Content Blocks, mega menus and white label. Where Astra charges: the Site Builder, mega menu, sticky header extras, CSS file generation according to its comparison chart, most store extras and white label. The Blocksy speed guide and Astra speed guide show which free switches to flip first.
Paying once: the lifetime prices, tier by tier
GeneratePress and Kadence list only yearly plans. Both of these vendors still sell lifetime licenses. As of October 2026, Blocksy's run $199 for Personal (1 site), $299 for Business (10 sites) and $499 for Agency (unlimited sites). Astra's run $249 for Astra Pro (3 sites, listed at $349), $279 for Pro + AI, $549 for the Essential Toolkit (10 sites) and $799 for the Business Toolkit (up to 1000 sites). Both offer a 14-day refund.
Run the numbers for ten sites. Blocksy Business is $99 a year or $299 once, and it includes Shop Extra, Post Types Extra and the pro starter sites. Astra's Essential Toolkit + AI is $199 the first year and $299 a year after, or $549 once, and it adds Spectra Pro, Premium Starter Templates, Ultimate Addons for Elementor and two hosted websites. That is not a like-for-like contest. You are weighing a theme license against a software bundle, and the bundle only wins if you will use the extras.
Watch the bottom tier. Blocksy Personal excludes Shop Extra, Post Types Extra, the pro starter sites and white label, so a single-site store owner who wants quick view and a wishlist needs Business. Renewal prices for Blocksy's annual plans are not on its pricing page; Astra's page warns that renewals cost the full list price. Full breakdowns live in Astra pricing and Blocksy pricing. If a key will not take, see Astra Pro license activation.

Product pages, carts and the lesson of Blocksy 2.1.50
The paid store features lean in different directions. Blocksy's Shop Extra brings a wishlist, quick view, filters and a cart that slide in from the side, a thumbnail slider under the gallery, and an add-to-cart bar that follows the shopper down the page: tools for browsing. Astra Pro's extras point toward the till: a checkout split into two steps or stripped of distractions, upsell displays, quantity steppers, galleries laid out vertically or horizontally with zoom, endless scrolling on the shop page and a quick view. Compare Blocksy for WooCommerce and Astra for WooCommerce.
Then there is update day. For some stores, Blocksy 2.1.50 scrambled the single product page: galleries overlapped and the details fell underneath. Going back a version cured it. The same release threw a fatal error on sites without WooCommerce, because a database migration called a Woo-only function. Astra's 4.13 series had its own rough patch: a missing Astra_Notices class took down one site's Pro addon, and another owner reported 4.13.1 memory trouble that stopped GPay and Apple Pay at checkout.
The lesson is the same for both. A store should never update on the live site first. Test on staging, keep an off-server backup, and roll back fast. If you are already mid-crisis, start with a Blocksy WooCommerce layout that broke, a Blocksy update that broke the site or Astra pages that broke after an update. If you would rather someone else run the staging routine, our hosting and maintenance plans do exactly that.
Headers, phones and the HTML element that lost its inputs
Both header builders work on the same idea of rows you drag elements into, with a separate mobile layout. The breakpoints differ. Astra switches to its toggle menu at 921px and its mobile layout at 544px, and the docs only describe moving those with PHP filters. Blocksy shows its mobile header below 1000px, with a further mobile breakpoint just under 690px, and no breakpoint setting appears in its docs. A browser window between 921 and 999 pixels wide therefore gets Astra's desktop header but Blocksy's mobile one. Check your analytics for laptop widths before you decide that matters.
Each has a recent header scar. On Blocksy 2.1.58, the header builder's HTML element loses its input tags when the page renders, which killed one owner's custom search form. On Astra, a report described an off-canvas menu that opened empty on real phones while desktop and emulators looked fine. Paid extras differ too: Blocksy Pro adds conditional headers, header Content Blocks, Wishlist, Compare and Languages elements; Astra Pro brings mega menus, sticky header controls and menus that fly out or fill the screen. Fixes live in Blocksy mobile menu not working, Astra mobile menu not working and the wider Astra repair hub.
Matching each theme to its owner
Astra fits
Owners already invested in Elementor, Beaver Builder or the Divi Builder, buyers who want the largest starter template library and support community, and agencies that need up to 1000 sites on one bundle.

The site that belongs on neither
Free themes make a quiet promise: start small, pay later, add features as you go. For a brochure site that promise holds. For a business whose site is its sales team, the add-as-you-go part becomes the problem. Each new need is another plugin, another license and another update to stage, and the theme you chose for its free tier ends up a small part of a large, uncoordinated stack.
A Next.js build starts from the other end. Pages are generated at build time and cached at the edge of a CDN, server-rendered React components hold back JavaScript the browser never needed, next/image handles sizes and formats, and next/font serves fonts from your own domain, so there is no local fonts extension to buy. Packages are locked to exact versions and run through a test build before any deploy, never updated live. The trade is a bigger build budget, plus developer time for any change to layout or structure. Read the full cases: Astra vs Next.js and Blocksy vs Next.js.
Editing stays simple with Athena CMS: editors get plain fields, a preview before anything publishes, a full version history and built-in e-commerce for a small store. Picasso keeps images described and sized, Argus keeps watch on links, forms, slow pages and expiring certificates, and Aegis runs a daily check for intrusions and backdoors, which answers the worry behind those vulnerability lists. Questions people ask before they call
For many free sites, yes. Blocksy's free theme and Companion plugin include a header builder with cart and account elements, CSS output to a file, local gravatars and an emoji-script switch. Astra's free version counters with wider page-builder support, a huge Starter Templates library and more specific free WooCommerce settings. Pick by the builder you use.
For most of Blocksy's extra features, yes. Companion is free on wordpress.org with 300,000+ active installs, and Blocksy Pro extends it rather than replacing it. Keep theme and Companion on matching versions, and remember that deactivating Companion during troubleshooting removes the features it provides. Our Blocksy CSS not updating guide covers a related headache.
It depends on site count. As of October 2026, Blocksy is cheaper at ten sites and at agency scale: $299 once for 10 and $499 for unlimited, against Astra's $549 and $799 toolkits, which do add extra plugins and AI tools. For one site, Blocksy Personal is $199, while Astra Pro lifetime is $249 but covers 3 sites. Both refund within 14 days.
Agencies on the wordpress.org forum have noted Blocksy appearing quite frequently in Wordfence's weekly lists. CreativeThemes staff answer that fixes land before the issues go public. The practical answer is the same for any theme: update promptly on staging, keep off-server backups and watch for advisories. A free website health check shows where you stand.
Blocksy names Elementor among its supported builders, and many of its starter sites are tagged for both Gutenberg and Elementor. Astra goes further for Elementor users by bundling Ultimate Addons for Elementor in its paid toolkits, though recent forum threads report some Elementor conflicts. See Blocksy with Elementor and Astra with Elementor.
