Kadence Theme Speed: Past the Free Performance Panel

Most themes charge for their speed settings. Kadence puts them in one free Customizer panel. So why do so many Kadence sites still fail Core Web Vitals on a phone? Because the panel governs the theme, and on a finished Kadence site the theme is the smallest thing on the page.

The short answer

Kadence theme speed starts in Customizer > General > Performance: load Google Fonts locally with preload, enable CSS Preload, and switch off Microdata Schema, Lightbox, Scroll To ID or Optimized Group Block if you do not use them. Then audit Kadence Blocks, Theme Kit Pro and Shop Kit, fix the LCP image and test the mobile header at 1,024 pixels.

Component stylesheets and an inline palette: how Kadence builds a page

Kadence does not hand every visitor one large stylesheet. Version 1.5.2, released July 24, 2026, splits its CSS by component: separate files for the header, the content area, the footer, the sidebar and individual plugin integrations. A page with no sidebar skips the sidebar file. Your Customizer choices (palette, fonts, spacing) become dynamic CSS that the theme attaches inline to its kadence-global stylesheet through WordPress's wp_add_inline_style function. So the styles you set arrive with the HTML, while the structural CSS comes as cacheable files.

On the JavaScript side, the theme's own front-end scripts in 1.5.2 ask for jQuery only on WooCommerce pages. A brochure site built purely on Kadence and core blocks never needs jQuery from the theme. Liquid Web, which now sells Kadence, calls the code clean and efficient and the theme lightweight yet full featured. Those are vendor descriptions, not measurements. The source does support the gist, and the Kadence review puts it in context with the rest of the product.

Customizer > General > Performance, toggle by toggle

Every setting below is in the free theme, documented by the vendor and checked in October 2026. None of them is a magic switch. Each removes one request or one feature, and the gain shows up only when you retest the same pages afterward.

Font preload deserves a warning. Preloading tells the browser a file matters more than whatever it would fetch next, and on a phone that next thing is often the hero image. Preload one regular weight used in the first screen, not the six weights a starter template picked. Theme Kit Pro adds one more switch worth knowing about: local gravatars, which keeps comment avatars from calling an outside server. If fonts break after the change, Kadence fonts not loading has the checks.

What fills a Kadence page once the theme is finished

A Kadence site is a family of plugins wearing one brand. The content is built in Kadence Blocks, which reports over 600,000 installs. The first design usually arrives through Kadence Starter Templates, at more than 200,000. Paid plans add Theme Kit Pro and, on Pro and Elite, Shop Kit and a security suite. One vendor on the invoice does not mean one file in the browser. Each piece loads its own assets, and the owner rarely knows which page pays for which.

Starter template extras

Sliders, animated counters, testimonial carousels and an icon set or two, imported as a design and left in place long after the content changed.

Kadence Blocks features

Galleries, sliders, forms and animation settings load their scripts on the pages that use them. Fifteen fancy blocks on a homepage is fifteen reasons to wait.

Theme Kit Pro elements

Hooked Elements, Conditional Headers, the Ultimate Menu's mega menus, infinite scroll and the dark-mode palette switch each add markup, CSS or script wherever they display.

Shop Kit modules

The former Iconic plugins: WooThumbs galleries, swatches, quickview, wishlists, bundles, delivery slots and a configurator. Switch on the modules your store sells with, not the full list.

Elite marketing tools

Popups, sale banners and behavioral targeting appear after the page starts rendering, which is exactly how layout shift and slow taps get introduced.

The usual guests

Analytics, chat, review widgets and cookie banners. None is Kadence's fault, and together they can outweigh every theme file.

The Kadence and Gutenberg guide covers keeping block layouts lean, and Kadence with Elementor explains what you add by putting a visual builder on a block-first theme. For stores, Kadence WooCommerce shows which Shop Kit modules belong on which pages.

Seven passes that make a Kadence site faster

  1. 1

Baseline the pages that earn money

Collect field data where traffic allows and lab runs for the homepage, a service or landing page, a post and a product page. Keep the test conditions identical for every rerun, as our theme speed test guide describes.

  2. 2

    Work on a staging copy

Kadence updates, Kadence Blocks updates and Shop Kit updates arrive separately. Test each change on a private copy, never live.

  3. 3

    Set the Performance panel

Local Google Fonts on, preload limited to one or two files, CSS Preload tested, and Microdata, Lightbox and Scroll To ID switched off where another tool does the job or nothing uses them.

  4. 4

    Trim blocks and template leftovers

Replace hero sliders with one image, drop entrance animations on mobile, delete unused Hooked Elements and deactivate plugins the starter template installed for pages you removed.

  5. 5

Match Shop Kit and Theme Kit Pro to real use

Turn off modules and elements that no page displays. A wishlist nobody clicks still costs bytes on every product page.

  6. 6

Fix the LCP image and reserve the header

Use a correctly sized image element for the hero, never lazy-loaded, and give the logo explicit dimensions in both the Desktop and the Tablet/Mobile header.

  7. 7

    Retest after every update

Rerun the same baseline after any Kadence, Kadence Blocks or WordPress update. If numbers slip, compare against staging on the old version before changing anything else.

Two headers, one 1,024-pixel line: Kadence and Core Web Vitals

LCP: the hero block, not the theme

On a block-built Kadence page, the largest element above the fold is usually a Row Layout with a background image or a slider's first slide. Both hide the image from the browser's early scan: one sits inside CSS, the other waits for a script to build it. Using an image element inside the row, sized for phones, gets it requested with the HTML instead. The deeper mechanism is in slow LCP on WordPress themes, and LCP on WordPress vs Next.js explains why a coded front end avoids the trap.

CLS: where the header changes hands

Kadence builds two separate headers, Desktop and Tablet/Mobile, and the theme's CSS shows the desktop one from 1,025 pixels up. A tablet held sideways at 1,024 pixels gets the mobile header, so test there as well as on a phone. Shifts usually come from a logo with no width and height, a transparent or sticky header that changes size, fonts swapping late and popups or sale banners that push content down. See layout shift in WordPress themes and CLS on WordPress vs Next.js.

INP: the drawer, the mega menu and everything sharing the thread

On phones a trigger opens an off-canvas drawer holding the mobile navigation, with optional collapsible sub-menus. The theme's script for that is small. Slow taps come from what runs beside it: chat widgets, tag managers, a heavy Ultimate Menu, behavioral targeting. One 1.5.1 site reported a drawer that opened with zero items; that is a bug rather than a speed issue, covered in Kadence header builder mobile issues. INP on WordPress vs Next.js explains the metric itself.

Slower after an update? Check the asset that went missing

Kadence sites change speed without anyone touching a setting, because the pieces update on different days. One 1.5.2 report is a tidy example: the Scroll To Top button did nothing because scroll-up.min.js returned a 404. The reporter marked it resolved after updating to WordPress 7.1.2 and Kadence Blocks 3.7.12. A missing file is not a slow file, but a 404 in the console is a sign that versions are out of step, and mismatched versions are where regressions hide.

The 2026 consolidation adds a second variable. Liquid Web folded SolidWP into Kadence Security, Iconic into Shop Kit and Restrict Content Pro into Kadence Memberships, and users on the support forum asked which renamed plugin to install. Two overlapping plugins doing one job, a firewall and a caching layer disagreeing, a CSS file that did not regenerate: each can cost time. Kadence slow after an update and Kadence CSS not updating walk through them, and the Kadence repair hub collects the rest.

Beyond the panel: the limits Kadence cannot tune away

  • Plugin weight. The Performance panel covers the theme. Kadence Blocks, Shop Kit, forms and memberships manage their own assets.
  • The breakpoint. The 1,024/1,025 split is set in the theme's CSS with no Customizer setting found in the docs. Moving it takes child theme code from our Kadence developers.
  • Dynamic requests. Cart, checkout, member areas and anyone logged in bypass page caching and run PHP and database queries on each view.
  • Vendor timing. Fixes for the theme, the blocks and Shop Kit ship when Liquid Web ships them; Patchstack's advisory for Shop Kit 3.0.6 and earlier showed how much rides on that queue.
  • Third parties. Ads, chat, analytics and review widgets run on other companies' code and other companies' servers.
A free Performance panel is a gift. It still only governs the code that came with the theme.

Keep Kadence when the site is a block-built brochure, a nonprofit or a course site that passes Core Web Vitals after these passes. Speed becomes a reason to move when the slow pages are the ones that matter most and they are slow because of dynamic work: member dashboards, a large Shop Kit catalog, gated content. Kadence vs Next.js compares the stacks fairly, and moving Kadence to Next.js shows how block attributes map to components.

On Next.js, pages are prerendered and served from a CDN, next/image sizes the hero, next/font self-hosts the type and Server Components send less JavaScript. Member areas come with Athena CMS membership sites, with login levels and Stripe subscription billing in the platform rather than in three plugins. It costs more to build. Our theme speed optimization team will tell you honestly if a tune-up is enough, and the WordPress themes section has the other guides.

Questions people ask before they call

Out of the box, both themes are light, and the difference is rarely what decides your score. Kadence gives you more free speed controls in one place, including local Google Fonts and CSS preload, and splits its CSS by component. Astra lists CSS file generation under Pro. Builders and plugins usually matter more than the theme. See Astra vs Kadence and our Astra speed guide.

No. Turn them on one at a time and retest. Load Google Fonts Locally is almost always worth it. Preload should cover one or two font files, not every weight. Microdata Schema should go off only if your SEO plugin already outputs structured data. Lightbox and Scroll To ID should go off only if nothing on the site uses them.

Simple blocks add little. Sliders, galleries, forms and animations load their own CSS and scripts on the pages that use them, and starter templates tend to stack many on a homepage. Replace the hero slider with one image and remove animations that do not help a visitor decide anything. Then measure again on a real phone, as our mobile speed guide describes.

The theme shows its desktop header from 1,025 pixels and the separate Tablet/Mobile header at 1,024 pixels and below. If the logo has no fixed size, or one header is sticky or transparent and the other is not, the layout can shift as the page settles. Set logo dimensions in both headers and test at exactly 1,024 pixels wide.

Usually, yes, or caching at the host. Kadence's settings reduce what the theme sends, but they do not cache pages, and every uncached view runs PHP and database queries. Use one caching layer, not two, and avoid running two tools that both rewrite CSS. Our WordPress optimization service sets that up alongside the theme work.
