Blocksy update recovery

Blocksy Update Broke My Site: Match the Versions, Then Decide on a Rollback

Blocksy shipped twelve releases between June 24 and October 1, 2026. Most were lists of small fixes. Two of them, 2.1.50 and 2.1.58, are the reason this page exists, and a third kind of breakage has nothing to do with any single release: updating one Blocksy package without the other two.

The short answer

When a Blocksy update breaks a site, first check that the theme, Blocksy Companion and Companion Pro are on the same version, because Companion switches its features off on a mismatch. Then match the symptom: 2.1.50 caused a fatal error on some sites, fixed in 2.1.51, and 2.1.58 strips input fields from the header HTML element. Restore a backup rather than downgrading blindly.

Read the damage before you touch the update button

Updates break sites in a handful of ways, and each one has a different first move. Write down which of these you see and whether the admin area still loads. A site where wp-admin works can be fixed from the dashboard. A site where it does not needs file access through your host.

  • "There has been a critical error on this website." A PHP fatal error. WordPress may have emailed the admin address a recovery mode link.
  • A banner reading "Action required - please update" the theme or the Companion plugin. That is Companion reporting a version mismatch.
  • Header or footer elements shown in red in the Customizer, or Pro features such as Content Blocks and conditional headers gone from the front end.
  • A custom form in the header lost its fields after 2.1.58, while buttons stayed.
  • Product pages rearranged, gallery overlapping, summary below the images.
  • Everything looks slightly off after the update, but nothing is missing. That is often stale cached CSS rather than a bug.

Three packages that must agree: theme, Companion and Pro

A Blocksy site runs the theme plus the free Blocksy Companion plugin, and paid sites replace that plugin with Blocksy Companion Pro, downloaded from the CreativeThemes account. They update separately: the theme and free Companion from wordpress.org, Pro through its license. CreativeThemes' troubleshooting documentation is direct about it: the theme and Companion should run the same version number.

The code enforces a softer version of that rule. In 2.1.58, Companion requires at least theme 2.1.37, and the theme declares a minimum Companion version of 2.1.36. If either check fails, Companion does not start its features at all and shows its update banner instead. Picture a site whose theme was held back while Companion updated itself to a release that wants a newer theme. Companion switches off, and the header loses its Pro elements, the Dynamic CSS file and every Content Block at once. That is why the vendor simply advises keeping the numbers equal.

The two 2026 releases with your symptoms in their notes

2.1.50: a fatal error from a settings migration

Each Blocksy release can carry a migration that runs once, early on every request, until it succeeds. The 2.1.50 migration moved the old AJAX add to cart switch into the single product layout options, and it called a WooCommerce layout function that was not loaded. On some sites, including ones without WooCommerce, the result was a fatal error naming blocksy_get_woo_single_layout_defaults in inc/classes/db-versioning/v2-1-50.php. Reading the code, the migration only reached that call when the old switch had been saved as off. Version 2.1.51, released a week later on July 30, adds a check that skips the call when the function is missing. If you are on 2.1.50 with this error, updating the theme to any later release is the fix.

2.1.58: the header HTML element got stricter

The 2.1.58 release on October 1 tightened sanitizing across the header and footer builder. In the code, the HTML element's front-end output now passes through WordPress's post-content filter, the same list of tags WordPress allows in posts for users without unfiltered HTML. Input fields are not on that list, nor are script tags. An owner's custom search form lost its inputs while textarea and button elements survived. CreativeThemes acknowledged the restriction went too far and offered a pre-release build on request. A developer can also wrap the markup in a shortcode, which the element runs after filtering, or extend the allowed tags through the blocksy:display-html:allowed-tags filter in a child theme.

Product page layouts were also reported broken after 2.1.50 on some stores. That has its own page: Blocksy WooCommerce layout broken.

Get the site back without making it worse

  1. 1

Take a backup of the broken state

Files and database, even though they are broken. If a rollback goes wrong, you need a known starting point.

  2. 2

    Get into the dashboard

Use the recovery mode link WordPress emailed, if it arrived. If not, connect by SFTP or your host's file manager and read the error log for the file and function named in the fatal error.

  3. 3

Fix a fatal error by moving forward

For the 2.1.50 error, replace the wp-content/themes/blocksy folder with a fresh copy of the current release from wordpress.org. When wp-admin works, uploading the theme zip through Upload Theme under Appearance > Themes offers to replace the installed copy.

  4. 4

    Line up the versions

Compare the theme, Companion and Companion Pro version numbers. Update whichever is behind. Once Pro is installed, the vendor says the free Companion can be safely uninstalled.

  5. 5

    Check the header HTML element

If a form or script in the header vanished after 2.1.58, move it into a shortcode or a Content Block, or ask CreativeThemes for the pre-release build.

  6. 6

    Rebuild styles and purge caches

Publish once in the Customizer to regenerate Blocksy's CSS, then clear the optimizer, page cache and CDN. Blocksy CSS not updating gives the order.

  7. 7

Roll back only if a current release is the cause

Older theme and Companion zips are on wordpress.org. Test the rollback on staging first, and prefer restoring a full pre-update backup over swapping files on a live site.

Ruling out the plugins that update alongside Blocksy

Not every breakage after a Blocksy update is Blocksy's. A caching plugin that updated the same night, a WooCommerce release, or a PHP upgrade by your host can all land at the same moment. CreativeThemes' self-diagnosis advice is sound: deactivate optimization plugins and services first, then test with a default Twenty-series theme to see whether a plugin fails on its own.

Check the dates in your activity or update log against the moment the site broke. If PHP changed, read site broke after a PHP update. For a blank page with no message, the white screen of death fix applies. The general guides to theme PHP errors and a theme that broke after an update cover the cases common to every theme, and theme and plugin conflicts explains how to isolate a culprit quickly.

An update routine for a theme that ships weekly

Blocksy releases often, and most of those releases fix things. The answer is not to stop updating. It is to stop updating live.

  • Keep a staging copy and update there first: WooCommerce, then the theme, Companion and Pro together.
  • Before each round, export settings under Customizer > General Options > Manage Options. It takes seconds and restores a whole header.
  • Turn off automatic theme and plugin updates on stores and lead-generation sites. Update weekly, after a staging check.
  • Wait a few days after a release before updating live. The 2.1.50 problem had a fix within a week.
  • Keep a copy of every Companion Pro zip you install, so an older Pro build is on hand if you need one.
  • After updating, click through the header on a phone, one product page, the cart and a form. If the Blocksy mobile menu stops opening, check the optimizer before the theme.

If that routine sounds like a second job, it is the job our hosting and maintenance plans do: tested updates on staging, off-server backups and uptime monitoring.

Updates you do not schedule are a stack decision

A Blocksy site depends on three packages from one vendor and a dozen from others, each updating on its own calendar and each able to change your live site the moment someone clicks Update. The theme is well maintained, and our Blocksy review says so. The model is the issue: every release is installed directly on production unless you build the staging habit yourself.

A theme that ships weekly needs an owner who tests weekly.

A Next.js site updates its dependencies in a build, runs it, previews it and only then deploys, so a bad release fails before a customer sees it. That needs a developer and a larger up-front budget. Weigh it in Blocksy vs Next.js, plan the move with Blocksy to Next.js, and see how Athena CMS handles content without plugins. For speed side effects of updates, see the Blocksy speed guide. To fix the site you have today, our theme repair team works from a backup on staging, and theme troubleshooting finds the cause first. Questions people ask before they call

CreativeThemes' documentation says to run the same version number, and the code enforces minimums: Companion 2.1.58 needs at least theme 2.1.37, and the theme declares a minimum Companion version. If the check fails, Companion turns its features off and shows an update banner. Update all Blocksy packages together, on staging first.

Update the theme to 2.1.51 or later, which adds a check that stops the failing call to blocksy_get_woo_single_layout_defaults. If wp-admin will not load, replace the wp-content/themes/blocksy folder over SFTP with a fresh copy of the current release from wordpress.org, then clear caches and confirm Companion matches.

Version 2.1.58 filters the header HTML element through WordPress's post-content tag list, which drops input fields and script tags. CreativeThemes acknowledged it was too strict and offered a pre-release build. Meanwhile, a developer can output the form through a shortcode or allow extra tags with a filter in a child theme.

Yes. Older theme and Companion versions are available from wordpress.org, and WordPress lets you upload a theme zip to replace the installed copy. Test on staging first, and prefer restoring a full backup from before the update, because migrations that ran during the update are not reversed by older files.

On a store or a site that brings in leads, yes, provided someone updates on staging every week instead. Automatic updates can install the theme without Companion Pro, or a release with a regression, directly on production. Leave security updates for WordPress core on. The general update fix covers this for any theme.
