Blocksy Theme Review (2026): Generous for Free, Fussy About Updates
Short version: install the free theme, add the free Companion plugin, and you may never pay CreativeThemes a cent. The longer version involves a lifetime license, a header builder worth bragging about and a run of 2026 updates that tested a few owners' nerves.

The short answer
Blocksy is one of the best free WordPress themes in 2026: a three-row header builder, block-editor-first design, no jQuery in the theme and WooCommerce options at no cost. Pro runs $69 to $149 a year, or $199 to $499 lifetime, as of October 2026. Its weak spot is update regressions in the 2.1.5x releases.

Verdict first: a generous theme on a busy release schedule
Blocksy earns a spot on almost any shortlist for a brochure site, a blog or a modest store. The free version does work that rivals charge for, the paid tiers are priced fairly, and the lifetime option is rarer than it should be. Two things stop it short of an unqualified yes. A Blocksy site leans on a companion plugin as much as on the theme. And the vendor ships often, which in 2026 meant several releases reached live sites with bugs attached. The scorecard sums it up in words, because a mark out of ten would claim a precision nobody has.
| Verdict | What decides it | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed approach | Strong | Dynamic CSS written to a file, no jQuery in the theme, emoji script off with one switch. Local fonts cost extra. |
| Ease of setup | Good | Starter sites for Gutenberg and Elementor; Companion is needed early; some imports stall. |
| Design flexibility | Very good for a theme | A free three-row header builder; Pro adds conditional headers and Content Blocks. |
| WooCommerce | Good, better on Business | Free shop and product options; quick view, wishlist and off-canvas filters need Shop Extra. |
| Builder fit | Broad | Block editor first; Elementor, Brizy and Beaver Builder named as supported. |
| License value | Excellent | Yearly from $69 or lifetime from $199, as of October 2026. |
| Support and ownership | Steady | CreativeThemes ships often and answers on wordpress.org; renewal prices are not published. |
| Long-term risk | Moderate | Theme, Companion and Pro must stay in step; the 2.1.5x releases showed what happens when they slip. |
Read the scorecard as a profile, not a grade. A shop owner who never touches code should weigh the WooCommerce and long-term risk rows. An agency should look hardest at license value and support. Everyone should read the section on the 2.1.5x releases before clicking Update on a live store. The rest of this review explains each row, and the theme reviews hub sets Blocksy beside twenty other themes checked on the same day.
Who builds Blocksy, and why its plugin matters as much as the theme
CreativeThemes makes Blocksy and sells the paid version from its own site. The free theme has been listed on wordpress.org since May 2019. At our October 6, 2026 check it showed more than 300,000 active installs, roughly 7.89 million downloads and a perfect 100 out of 100 score across 873 ratings. Version 2.1.58 shipped on October 2, the freshest release among the 21 themes we track. It asks for WordPress 6.7 and PHP 7.0 or newer.
Here is the part buyers miss. Much of what people praise as Blocksy lives in Blocksy Companion, a free plugin with its own 300,000+ installs and its own version number. Blocksy Pro is not a second theme. It is a license that extends Companion with extensions you switch on one at a time. So a typical Blocksy site runs up to three pieces from one vendor: the theme for templates and the Customizer, Companion for the extension framework, and Pro for the paid modules listed below.
- Conditional headers, as many as you need, plus duplicate header elements such as two menus or two buttons in one row.
- Content Blocks, hooks that drop content into the page with page, user-role and expiry conditions, and optional fixed positioning.
- Advanced Menu, which adds mega menus and menu icons.
- Custom fonts, Adobe Typekit and Local Google Fonts, the last one mattering more for speed and privacy than its place on the list suggests.
- Custom sidebars and code snippets, so small PHP and script additions have a home that survives theme updates.
- A custom 404 page, header or footer built with whichever page builder you prefer.
That arrangement is tidy as long as the three pieces agree on versions. Most of the time they do. The exceptions are covered further down, and they are the main reason this review stops short of a perfect score.
Setup: from blank install to a working starter site in an afternoon
Blocksy's onboarding is gentle. Activate the theme, accept the prompt to install Companion, and the starter site library appears. Starter sites come in Gutenberg and Elementor versions, and the pro designs arrive with the Business plan. Everything global, from colors and typography to layout widths, the header and the footer, lives in the WordPress Customizer with a live preview. Page content stays in whichever editor the starter site was built for, which is the first decision worth making on purpose.
- 1
Start on staging
An import overwrites settings and adds demo content. Run the first one on a staging copy, never on a site that already takes orders.
- 2
Install Companion
Accept the prompt. Without it, many of the features in this review will be missing, and Pro has nothing to extend.
- 3
Pick a starter site that matches your editor
Choose a Gutenberg design if your team edits in the block editor. Choose an Elementor one only if you already own and know Elementor.
- 4
Plan for a stalled import
Blocksy keeps a help doc for imports that hang. Support has said it cannot diagnose installs that are not publicly reachable, so a failing localhost import may need a staging URL.
- 5
Set CSS output to a file
Under Customizer, General Options, Performance, confirm Dynamic CSS Output is set to File, the vendor's recommended mode, and switch off the emoji script.
- 6
Write down three version numbers
Record the theme, Companion and Pro versions. When an update misbehaves, those numbers are your rollback target.
None of this needs a developer. It does need a staging site, the one habit that would have spared most of the owners in the support threads quoted later. If you would rather have the setup done for you, our theme customization team builds Blocksy sites to a brand guide and leaves the version notes behind.
The header builder is why people switch to Blocksy
Most free themes give you a logo slot and a menu. Blocksy gives you three header rows and a drag-and-drop palette, with separate layouts for desktop and mobile. The free palette covers Account, Button, Cart, HTML, Logo, desktop and mobile menus, Search, Socials and the Trigger, the hamburger that opens an off-canvas panel holding the mobile menu. For most business sites that is the whole job, done without a license.
Pro widens the palette with Color Switch, Compare, Contacts, Divider, a Header Content Block, Languages, an off-canvas desktop menu, a Search Box, a Widget Area and Wishlist. The bigger Pro feature is conditions: one header for the shop, another for the blog, a third for logged-in customers. Mega menus and menu icons come from the Advanced Menu extension, the piece a long menu with many categories tends to need.
When the hamburger stops opening or the off-canvas panel shows an empty menu, the checks are the menu location, cached CSS and script conflicts, in that order. Our Blocksy mobile menu fix goes through each one. For the same failure on other themes, the general guide to a WordPress mobile menu not working explains the mechanism.
Blocksy pricing: three tiers, two ways to pay
As of October 2026, every Blocksy Pro tier can be bought yearly or once. The tiers differ by site count and by which extensions they include, so the cheapest plan is not always the cheapest choice.
- Personal: $69 a year or $199 lifetime, one site. Leaves out the pro starter sites, Shop Extra, Post Types Extra and White Label.
- Business: $99 a year or $299 lifetime, ten sites. Adds the pro starter sites, Shop Extra and Post Types Extra. The vendor badges it as the popular plan.
- Agency: $149 a year or $499 lifetime, unlimited sites, and the only tier with White Label.
Refunds are offered for 14 days from purchase. Renewal prices for the yearly plans are not published, so ask before assuming year two costs what year one did. The lifetime math is short: Personal lifetime costs a little under three years of the yearly plan, Business almost exactly three, Agency a little over three. If the site will run on Blocksy longer than that, pay once and stop thinking about it.
Free covers more than most owners expect: the header builder, the Customizer options, the performance switches and WooCommerce styling. Pay when you need conditional headers, Content Blocks, mega menus, local font hosting or the store extras. Our Blocksy pricing breakdown maps each feature to its plan and adds up what a finished site costs once the other plugins are counted.
Speed and SEO: tidy defaults, with local fonts behind the paywall
CreativeThemes markets Blocksy as lightning fast and says it is lighter and faster than most similar themes. Those are vendor claims. Its homepage shows speed-tool counters we could not capture, so we quote none. What we can describe is the machinery. Dynamic CSS Output writes a generated global.css loaded as an ordinary stylesheet, or prints the styles inline. The same Performance panel disables the emoji script, stores Gravatars locally and lazy loads theme images. Our check of the 2.1.58 package found no theme script that depends on jQuery.
Two gaps remain. Local Google Fonts is a Pro extension, so a free Blocksy site using Google Fonts calls Google's servers unless you self-host another way. And in File mode, a cached global.css can outlive a Customizer change; if your edits refuse to appear, Blocksy CSS not updating covers regeneration and cache layers. Measure before and after every change using the method in our Blocksy speed guide, and see how lean themes compare in fastest WordPress themes.
On search, Blocksy does what a theme should: it stays quick and leaves the rest alone. Titles, meta descriptions, sitemaps, redirects and most structured data belong to an SEO plugin on any WordPress theme, Blocksy included, so budget for one. What a theme can add to rankings is speed and a layout that does not jump, the lens our themes for SEO roundup uses. If organic traffic pays the bills, read WordPress vs Next.js for SEO too.
Stores, blocks and builders: where Blocksy fits a stack
The wordpress.org listing promises advanced WooCommerce support, and the free Customizer does carry shop and product page options. The conversion features sit in Shop Extra, on the Business and Agency plans: quick view, a floating add-to-cart bar, off-canvas filters, an off-canvas cart, a gallery thumbnail slider and a product wishlist. For a catalog of a few dozen products, that is a sensible kit without shopping for separate store plugins. Settings and limits are in Blocksy and WooCommerce.
Blocksy was made for the block editor first; the vendor says it was built from scratch for full compatibility. That is the stack we would choose on Blocksy: theme, Companion, core blocks, and Pro only when a feature demands it. Editor styling and patterns are covered in the Blocksy Gutenberg guide. When the editor and the front end disagree, the cross-theme fix for a block editor not matching the theme applies.
Page builders work too. Many starter sites are tagged for both Gutenberg and Elementor, and the homepage also names Brizy and Beaver Builder. Pairing Blocksy with a builder is legitimate, but it changes this review: the builder's weight and update cycle then matter more than the theme's. If that is your plan, read Blocksy with Elementor before importing anything.
Known problems: what the 2026 support forum recorded
A theme this popular will collect edge cases. The ones below stand out because they arrived with updates, not misconfiguration, and each hit owners whose only action was clicking Update.
- 2.1.50 and product pages. Some WooCommerce stores saw the single product layout break, with the gallery overlapping and the details pushed below. Rolling back fixed it. Repair steps are in Blocksy WooCommerce layout broken.
- 2.1.50 without a store. A database migration called blocksy_get_woo_single_layout_defaults(), a function that did not exist on sites without WooCommerce, and those sites hit a fatal error.
- 2.1.58 and header HTML. The front end began stripping input elements from the Header Builder's HTML element, which broke at least one hand-built search form.
- Vulnerability lists. Agencies asked why Blocksy appears quite frequently in Wordfence's weekly lists. Staff answered that issues are resolved before they are published. Fixed by the vendor still means updated by you.
- Starter imports. Stalled imports have their own vendor doc, and installs on localhost get limited help.

A free theme this good still asks one thing of you: a staging site.
Who should install Blocksy, who should pass, and what to weigh it against
Install Blocksy if
- You want a five to fifteen page business site in the block editor, with a header that looks custom
- You would rather pay once: a lifetime license suits the budget better than one more subscription
- You run a small WooCommerce catalog and the Shop Extra features are all the store needs
- You are an agency that wants a white-label base for many brochure sites
- Someone on the team will test each update on staging first
Pass on Blocksy if
- You want one self-contained product; Blocksy without Companion is a smaller theme than the one reviewed here
- Your design needs breakpoints other than 1000 and 690 pixels and nobody writes custom CSS
- Your store cannot absorb an update regression and no one owns a staging routine
- The site needs member logins, quote tools or pages generated from data
- You want a visual builder that is also the theme, in which case read our Bricks review
Each rival wins a different argument. Astra vs Blocksy is ecosystem size against free features. Kadence vs Blocksy pits two strong header builders against each other. GeneratePress vs Blocksy is restraint against generosity, and store owners should read Flatsome vs Blocksy. Every matchup lives in the theme comparisons section, and the three-way GeneratePress vs Blocksy vs Next.js adds the custom option.
If the site has outgrown any theme, the fair test is Blocksy vs Next.js, and the move itself is mapped in Blocksy to Next.js. A free site audit tells you which side of that line you are on. If staying is the right answer, we will tune the Blocksy build you have rather than sell you a new one.
Questions people ask before they call
Yes. The theme and the Blocksy Companion plugin are both free on wordpress.org, and together they include the header builder, Customizer options, performance switches and WooCommerce styling. Blocksy Pro, from $69 a year or $199 lifetime as of October 2026, adds conditional headers, Content Blocks, mega menus, Local Google Fonts and, from the Business plan, Shop Extra. See Blocksy pricing for the full split.
The theme installs and runs on its own, but many features reviewers credit to Blocksy come from Companion, and Pro is built as an extension of it. In practice, plan on running both. That also means two products to update and keep in step, which is worth knowing before an update day. Our Blocksy update guide covers rollbacks when they disagree.
For a small to mid-sized catalog, yes. The free theme has shop and product page options in the Customizer. Quick view, a floating add-to-cart bar, off-canvas filters and cart, and a wishlist come with Shop Extra on the Business and Agency plans. Test updates on staging: version 2.1.50 broke single product layouts for some stores. Details are in Blocksy and WooCommerce.
Not on a live store. Copy the site to staging, update the theme, Companion and Pro together, and click through the header, a product page and checkout. The 2.1.50 and 2.1.58 releases both caused problems for some owners that a staging check would have caught. Our hosting and maintenance plans run that routine for you.
All three are lean starting points, and the plugins you add usually decide speed more than the theme does. Blocksy's edge is that its CSS can load as a file and the theme ships no jQuery-dependent scripts; local font hosting needs Pro. Test your own pages rather than trusting anyone's chart, using the steps in our Blocksy speed guide.
