AI search for restaurants
GEO for Restaurants: Getting Picked When Diners Ask AI Where to Eat
"Can I get a table for six tonight near the Pearl?" used to return ten links and a map. Now it can return a paragraph, three restaurants and a way to book. The place with an empty patio and a menu that lives in a photo of a chalkboard is not one of the three.

The short answer
GEO for restaurants means making sure ChatGPT, Google's AI Mode and AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and Siri can find your current menu, hours, price range and reservation link, and read enough reviews to describe you accurately. Most of the work happens in Google Business Profile, Yelp, Tripadvisor, Apple Business, your booking platform and a text menu on your own site.

Diners ask for a mood, a diet and a time slot
Nobody asks a chatbot for "restaurants." They ask for Tex-Mex good enough for an anniversary, a patio with live music, a table for six in an hour, brunch that is open right now. Each question bundles a cuisine, an attribute and a clock. An engine can only answer with a restaurant whose public record holds all three facts. Everyone else is left off, however good the mole.
- "Best Tex-Mex in San Antonio for a date night."
- "Restaurants near me with a patio and live music."
- "Can I get a table for 6 tonight near the Pearl?"
- "Gluten-free friendly restaurants near me."
- "Best brunch spots open now."
- "Where can a group of twelve eat near Southtown with vegan options?"
What decides these is not the adjective on your sign. It is attributes, hours and capacity. Google's AI Mode can now take the next step itself: its reservation feature, announced August 21, 2025, draws on live web browsing, the Knowledge Graph, Google Maps and partners such as OpenTable, Resy and Tock. The answer and the booking can happen in one place, which is a fine arrangement when your facts are right. More on that engine in how Google AI Mode works, and on other trades in our GEO industry guides.
Yelp, Tripadvisor and your own menu: who writes the answer
Restaurants are the one category where third-party platforms speak for you more loudly than your own website. Several of them have signed deals with the AI companies. Here is who feeds what, and the job each one gives you.
| Source | Where it reaches | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini, which reads Google Maps hours, ratings and reviews | Use the menu editor (sections, descriptions, prices), pick a preferred menu source, keep holiday hours current |
| Yelp | ChatGPT shows Yelp reviews, photos and details, plus Yelp Reservations and Waitlist for thousands of US and Canadian restaurants (announced August 10, 2026); Yelp also feeds Apple Maps, Alexa+ and Bing | Claim the page, fix hours and photos, connect reservations or waitlist if you use them |
| Tripadvisor | Perplexity partnered with Tripadvisor in January 2025 to use its one billion reviews and contributions and its AI review summaries | Claim the listing, reply to reviews, keep hours and price range current |
| OpenTable, Resy, Tock | Named partners for AI Mode reservations; Amazon says Alexa+ books through OpenTable | Keep availability, party sizes and booking rules accurate on whichever one you use |
| Apple Business | Place cards across Apple Maps, Siri, Safari and Spotlight; replaced Apple Business Connect on April 14, 2026 | Claim it, add photos and a reserve or order action, match hours to Google |
| Bing Places | Microsoft says Copilot runs on Bing's index | Import from Google at bing.com/forbusiness, then check each field |
| Your website | BrightLocal (November 2024) found business websites were 58% of the sources ChatGPT drew on for local searches | Publish the full menu as text, with prices, hours and a booking link |
Yelp turns up in almost every row, and that is Yelp's own account: its announcement lists ChatGPT, Apple Maps, Alexa+, Microsoft Bing, DuckDuckGo and Yahoo as places its content appears, and press reports say Perplexity has licensed Yelp data since 2024. A neglected Yelp page is a neglected answer in half a dozen engines. Engine by engine detail lives on the pages for ChatGPT, Perplexity and Siri and Apple Intelligence.
A menu in plain text, not trapped in a photo
The most useful page on a restaurant site is the menu, and the commonest way to waste it is to publish it as a PDF or a snapshot of the chalkboard. Google says it can show a menu from your Business Profile editor, a third-party provider, a transcription of your website, customer photos or a link, which leaves room for last spring's prices to win. Choose a preferred source and keep it current. Vercel's December 2024 analysis found most major AI crawlers do not run JavaScript, so a menu that loads inside an ordering widget may never be read at all. Why scripts hide pages from AI crawlers explains the test.
Dietary facts that can be quoted
Which dishes are gluten-free, vegetarian or vegan, and how the kitchen handles cross-contact. "Options available" answers nothing.
The room, described
Patio, music nights, private dining capacity, parking, high chairs, wheelchair access. Attribute questions get answered with attribute facts.
Every set of hours
Brunch hours, kitchen close versus bar close, holiday hours. In Athena CMS, the Hestia agent keeps holiday hours the same on the site and the listings.
How to get a table
Booking link, largest party you seat, waitlist, walk-in policy. An engine asked about a party of six needs the number six somewhere.
Price range and specials
A typical check per person and happy hour times, written inside the TABC rules covered below.
On schema.org, Restaurant is a FoodEstablishment type with servesCuisine, acceptsReservations and hasMenu properties, and hasMenu takes a full Menu, text or a URL. Match it to the visible page. Google requires no special markup for its AI features, so treat it as housekeeping (structured data for AI has the detail). Our Cantina demo, a fictional Tex-Mex restaurant DataCram built to show the pattern, puts the whole menu on the page with prices, hours and a reservation path. Because it is fictional, it deliberately carries no Restaurant markup, so no map mistakes it for somewhere to drive.
Happy hour, calorie counts and the review rules kitchens trip over
Restaurants carry fewer advertising rules than a law firm or a real estate brokerage, but the rules they have land on the exact facts AI engines repeat: drink prices, nutrition and reviews.
- Texas happy hours. The TABC lets retailers advertise drink prices and happy hours, but reduced-price drinks must end at 11 p.m. (16 TAC 45.103(c)(11)), and two-for-one drink offers are prohibited at on-premise retailers (45.103(c)(1)). "Two-for-one margaritas till midnight" breaks two rules in four words, and an engine will repeat it faithfully.
- Menu labeling for chains. Under FDA rules (21 CFR 101.11), chains with 20 or more locations under the same name selling substantially the same menu post calories for standard items on menus and menu boards and provide written nutrition information on request.
- Yelp's guidelines say businesses should never ask customers to write reviews, and Yelp places a Consumer Alert on a page when it finds paid or incentivized reviews, review rings or legal threats against reviewers.
- Google Maps bans incentives of any kind for reviews and bans asking only happy customers.
- The FTC's review rule, effective October 21, 2024, bans fake and AI-generated reviews, undisclosed reviews by staff or relatives and review suppression, while allowing you to ask every customer for an honest review.
Three hundred reviews, condensed into one sentence you did not write
Engines do not read your reviews the way a regular does. Tripadvisor's AI summaries, Perplexity's answers and Gemini's place summaries compress hundreds of comments into a line or two, and a complaint that recurs, the forty-minute weekend wait or the loud room, is the one that survives the compression. The fix starts in the dining room, not the listing. Then reply, briefly and specifically, so the record shows the problem was heard. If an AI answer already leads with your worst night, this fix for an AI quoting a bad review walks through it.
An engine boils three hundred reviews down to one sentence, and you do not get to choose the sentence.
Missing facts invite a stranger kind of help. Google says that when a business has little information online, AI Mode can have Google call it to check prices, availability or reservations, and may update a Business Profile from the answers. You can switch the calls off in Business Profile under Advanced settings, "Google automated calls and text messages," but the better fix is publishing the facts so nobody needs to ring at 7 p.m. on a Friday. Wrong hours already showing? Start with AI has the wrong business information or AI cites old information. The Echo agent in Athena CMS drafts review replies for your approval and flags angry ones first.
From stale listing to bookable answer in thirty days
- 1
Ask like a hungry stranger
Put ten real diner questions, with your neighborhood and a time, to ChatGPT, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Siri. The free AI visibility check runs them through the engines' APIs and shows who was named; API answers can differ a little from the apps.
- 2
Pick one menu source of truth
Put the menu on your site as text, then point Business Profile's preferred menu source at it and update the editor to match.
- 3
Make hours agree everywhere
Google, Apple Business, Yelp, Tripadvisor, Bing Places and your booking platform, including holiday and brunch hours.
- 4
Connect the booking path
OpenTable, Resy, Tock or Yelp Reservations, whichever you use, with real party sizes, plus a reserve action on your Apple place card.
- 5
Write down the attributes
Dietary options, patio, music, private dining, parking, all on the site and in the listings' attribute fields.
- 6
Start a review habit you can keep
Ask every guest the same way, with no incentive, and reply to new reviews weekly.
- 7
Re-ask on day thirty
Run the same ten questions and compare. Check that robots.txt is not blocking OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Bingbot.
What we take off a restaurant's plate, and what an owner can do on a Monday
We fold GEO into a monthly SEO program with a defined scope and no long contract. Pricing starts at $625 a month; most local businesses pay somewhere from $625 to $2,250, as listed on our SEO pricing page. Where you land comes out of a free GEO audit: how crowded your corner of the dining scene is, and how much the menu, site and listings need. What drives GEO pricing has the levers, and SEO financing is available.
The work covers question tracking across the engines (we monitor with AICiteBeam), listing cleanup on Google, Apple, Bing, Yelp and Tripadvisor, review requests and replies, a crawlable text menu and attribute pages, and monthly reports that show the answers themselves. If the website is the obstacle, custom builds start at $1,750 and our restaurant industry page shows how we build them.
Honestly, a single-location taqueria can do the first month alone on a slow Monday: claim the listings, type the menu into the site, fix the hours, reply to reviews. Multi-location groups, places with several menus, and anyone selling alcohol specials across platforms gain more from a program. Food makers selling to shoppers rather than diners should read GEO for specialty food brands, shops can start with GEO for local retail, and voice questions are covered in voice search for restaurants.
Questions owners ask us about AI search
Yes, because it is the one source nobody else can edit. Listings get changed by strangers and menus get scraped from old photos, while BrightLocal found in November 2024 that business sites supplied well over half of the sources ChatGPT used for local searches. A simple site with the menu in text, hours and a booking link gives every engine a version to check the others against.
It is usually repeating a source: an old Yelp page, a third-party listing or a cached page on your own site. Correct the hours on Google, Apple Business, Yelp, Tripadvisor and Bing Places, update the site, then use the thumbs-down feedback on the bad answer. The wrong business information fix gives the order to work in.
It is a weaker choice than text on the page. A PDF or photo asks every engine to extract it correctly, and menus loaded by a script may not be read by AI crawlers that skip JavaScript. Keep a PDF for printing if you like, but publish the same menu as plain text with prices.
Not if you want to keep your listings clean. Google Maps bans incentives of any kind for reviews, Yelp says businesses should never ask for reviews and flags incentivized ones with a Consumer Alert, and the FTC rule bans incentives tied to a positive review. Asking every guest the same way, with nothing offered, is safe on Google.
Some can. Google's AI Mode reservation feature works with partners such as OpenTable, Resy and Tock, Yelp says Yelp Reservations and Waitlist are available inside ChatGPT for thousands of restaurants, and Amazon says Alexa+ books through OpenTable. Each depends on your availability being accurate on that platform.
It runs inside our monthly SEO programs, priced from $625 a month, with most local businesses paying $625 to $2,250 and no long contract. One location on a quiet street usually sits near the bottom, a group with several dining rooms nearer the top. We set the number after a free GEO audit.
