Free GEO audit

Free GEO Audit: An AI Visibility Audit of What the Engines Say About You

It is 11:40 at night and you have just asked ChatGPT who the best electrician in town is. It named two competitors and a company that closed last spring. The audit is what you do the next morning: find out why, in writing, from people who check.

The short answer

A GEO audit, also called an AI visibility audit, tests how AI engines answer your customers' questions and why. DataCram's free audit runs those questions through ChatGPT, Google's AI answers, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude, then checks your site's crawlability and structured data, your listings, reviews, mentions and content gaps. It ends with a fixed monthly quote.

The midnight question, and the morning after

Most owners meet AI search the same way: late, idly, by asking a chatbot about themselves. The answer is flattering, missing or wrong, and all three raise the same question. Why does it say that? One answer cannot tell you. AI engines vary their replies from one asking to the next, draw on different indexes, and weigh your site, your listings and other people's opinions differently.

The free GEO audit swaps the anecdote for a record. We ask the questions your customers ask, across the engines they use, more than once, then trace each answer back to the sources behind it. You learn whether you are named, how you are described, who is named instead, and what fixable things stand in the way. It is the same groundwork that sits under every generative engine optimization program, done before anyone asks you for money.

An audit, not a sales deck with a score on it

What you get

  • Real answers from each engine, with the exact question and the date asked
  • The businesses named instead of you, and the sources each engine cited
  • Findings on your site, listings, reviews and mentions, each tied to a fix
  • A ranked fix list you can carry out yourself or hand to anyone
  • A fixed monthly quote for the work, if you want us to do it

What you do not get

  • A single AI visibility score with no answers behind it
  • A promise that any engine will name you after the fixes
  • A tool export padded to sixty pages to look thorough
  • Pressure: the audit is free and the quote carries no obligation
  • Advice to pay for anything you can fix yourself in an afternoon

Six places the audit looks

The questions customers ask

A set of questions in your customers' words: service plus town, comparisons, prices, "best" and "near me", and Spanish versions where your market asks in Spanish. Each goes to ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude.

Crawlability

Your robots.txt is read for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot, Bingbot, Googlebot and Applebot. We fetch the raw HTML, as most AI crawlers do, to see whether services, prices and contact details exist before scripts run. Background: JavaScript and AI crawlers.

Structured data

Organization, LocalBusiness and any Product markup checked for validity and for agreement with the visible text, as Google advises. Markup that contradicts the page creates the confusion it was meant to remove. More in structured data for AI.

Entity consistency

Name, address, phone, hours, categories and description compared across your site, Google Business Profile, Apple Business, Bing Places, Yelp and your industry's directories. Every mismatch is listed with where it lives. Why it matters: entity optimization.

Reviews

Volume, recency, rating and replies on the platforms engines read, plus a check that the way you ask for reviews fits the FTC rule and Google's stricter policy, which bans incentives and asking only happy customers.

Mentions and content gaps

The publications, directories, associations and forums the engines cite for your questions, whether you appear there, and which customer questions no page on your site answers.

How we test questions without fooling ourselves

AI answers are noisy. Ask ChatGPT the same question twice and the list can change; phrase it differently and it can change again. An audit built on one screenshot is a horoscope. So we treat every answer as a sample, store each one in full, and report patterns: named in most runs, in some, or in none. Questions about a service area are asked with that area in them, because that is how customers ask.

We send most questions through the engines' APIs, and answers there can differ a little from what a customer sees in the ChatGPT or Gemini app, so the findings say how each answer was gathered. The method is the one behind prompt tracking and the AI share of voice calculation. Here is how a single question is recorded, using an invented business:

One audit question as the findings record it (hypothetical example)

What lands in your inbox

The findings arrive as a written report, ordered by what to fix rather than by what we checked, because the order of the work matters more than the length of the list. It is written for an owner, not an engineer, and every finding names the page, listing or profile it applies to. Expect these parts:

  • The answers themselves, engine by engine, with the businesses named and the sources cited.
  • Crawl and markup findings: blocked AI crawlers, text missing from the raw HTML, structured data that disagrees with the page, slow pages.
  • A listings table showing each mismatch in name, address, phone, hours or description, and where it lives.
  • A review picture: volume and recency against the competitors being named, and any review practice that breaks platform rules.
  • Mention and content gaps: the sites engines trust for your questions where you are absent, and the questions your pages never answer.
  • A prioritized fix list, marked by what you can do yourself for free and what needs help.
  • A fixed monthly quote for the work, if you want us to do it.

How long it takes depends on how many locations, services and engines are involved; a single-location plumber needs fewer questions than a regional chain. We give you a delivery date when we agree the question set, before any work starts.

How the audit runs, start to finish

  1. 1

    Tell us the basics

Business name, website, the services that matter most and where you serve. If you already ran the free AI visibility check, send the question you used and what came back.

  2. 2

    Agree the questions

We draft the questions your customers ask, in their words, and you correct them. You know how your customers talk better than any keyword tool does.

  3. 3

    We run and read

The questions go to each engine, the answers are stored, and we trace the sources behind them while checking the site, listings, reviews and mentions.

  4. 4

    You get the findings

The written report and the ranked fix list, with the free fixes marked so you can start the same day.

  5. 5

    You decide

The quote is a fixed monthly price for a written scope. Take it, take the fix list elsewhere, or do it yourself. No obligation either way.

Signs you need one now, and signs you can wait

Not every business needs an audit this month, and an audit run too early mostly confirms what a free check already showed. You probably need one now if any of these sounds familiar:

  • An AI engine names competitors for your main service and never names you; see ChatGPT recommends a competitor.
  • ChatGPT, Gemini or an AI Overview has your hours, prices, address or services wrong.
  • You rank well on Google but AI answers skip you, the pattern in ranks on Google, missing in AI.
  • You moved, rebranded or merged, and the old details keep surfacing in answers.
  • You pay for a tracking tool and nobody acts on what it shows.

You can probably wait if the free check names you for your core questions, your details are right and your market is quiet. Rerun it every month or two. The site's other free tools cover neighboring ground: the map pack audit for Google Maps rankings, the voice search check for what Siri and Alexa read, and the website health check for speed and crawl problems. If you found the problem tonight, AI search fixes sorts the common symptoms with free steps for each.

After the audit: a number, not a nudge

If you want the work done, the quote places you in our monthly SEO program, which includes GEO. Programs start at $625 a month, and most local businesses fall between $625 and $2,250 a month, per our SEO pricing page. Where you land depends on how competitive the questions are and how much the site, listings and content need. There is no long contract, and financing is available. The reasoning behind the range is on GEO pricing.

The program runs on tools we use ourselves. AICiteBeam, the GEO tracking platform we built, follows whether ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews name and cite a brand and which sources they lean on. On sites we build, Athena CMS adds Delphi, an agent that checks what the AI engines say about the business and drafts the facts and FAQs they cite, all waiting for your approval.

Questions owners ask us about AI search

Yes. There is no fee and no obligation. The audit ends with a fixed monthly quote for doing the work, which you can accept, ignore or shop around. The fix list is yours either way, and it marks the items you can handle yourself at no cost.

The AI visibility check puts one question to the engines live and shows the answers in your browser. The audit uses a full set of your customers' questions, looks for patterns across repeated runs, and then finds the reasons: crawler access, structured data, listings, reviews, mentions and content gaps. The check tells you what. The audit tells you why, and what to do.

ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Claude. For Siri and Apple Maps we review the sources behind them, chiefly your Apple Business place card and Yelp profile, since press reports name Yelp as the most common source of Apple Maps reviews in the US. Each engine has its own guide, starting with how to get recommended by ChatGPT.

To start: the business name, website, main services and service area. Read access to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools helps, because their AI reports show impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode and citations in Copilot, but the audit runs without them. We never need your passwords.

Yes, plainly. If AI crawlers cannot read your pages, because text loads only through JavaScript or robots.txt blocks them, that goes to the top of the list. Most sites need fixes, not a rebuild. If a rebuild really is the cheaper path, it is quoted at a fixed price, from $1,750 for a custom site.

The audit records the exact wording and traces it to its likely source, such as an old directory listing, a stale Business Profile or an outdated page. Most errors are fixed at the source; some also go through the engine's feedback button. The guide to fixing wrong business information in AI answers lists the correction routes engine by engine.
