How to Show Up in Google AI Mode: Follow-Up Questions, Shopping Carts and Phone Calls

AI Mode is not a box above the results. It is a conversation that replaces them, and the customer who starts one may ask five more questions, compare three products and book a table before visiting a single website. Your job is to be useful at every turn.

The short answer

To show up in Google AI Mode, be indexed and eligible for snippets in Google Search, then supply what its follow-up turns and tasks draw on: a complete Google Business Profile, an accurate Merchant Center feed if you sell products, reservation partners if you take bookings, and pages that answer the comparison, price and availability questions people ask after their first one.

Search that keeps asking questions back

Google began rolling AI Mode out to everyone in the US on May 20, 2025, and reported in July 2026 that it had passed 1 billion monthly active users. People reach it at google.com/ai, through the AI Mode button on a Google results page, or from the icon in the Google app. Its help center says it is available in more than 100 countries and territories.

Mechanically, AI Mode splits a question into subtopics and searches them at the same time, then writes one answer with links. When Google is not confident enough in an AI response, it shows a set of ordinary web links instead. The difference from AI Overviews is what happens next: the user keeps talking. Each follow-up is a fresh round of searching, and each round can pick different sources.

The conversation

Multi-turn answers built from many searches at once. Your pages need to answer the detail questions, not only the opener.

The shopping layer

Product listings from Google's Shopping Graph, with checkout on eligible US retailers' listings through the Universal Commerce Protocol.

The errands

Restaurant reservations through booking partners, and calls Google places to businesses when it cannot find an answer online.

The personal layer

Some results draw on a user's previous conversations and places searched or tapped in Search and Maps. Two people can get different answers.

Winning the second and third question

The first answer in AI Mode is often a short list. The business that ends up chosen is the one that still has answers when the user narrows it down. Search Console treats each follow-up as a new query, which tells you how Google sees it: a conversation is a string of searches, and each one is a chance to be cited or dropped.

Every row is a fact many businesses know and never publish. That gap is the opportunity. Our content AI can quote page covers how to phrase these facts, and how AI chooses businesses explains why the boring, consistent record tends to win the shortlist. Shopping in AI Mode runs on your product feed

For retailers, AI Mode is less a search page than a sales floor. Google's AI optimization guide says AI responses can include product listings, and that Merchant Center feeds help products appear in them. The source behind those listings is the Shopping Graph, which Google said in May 2026 holds more than 60 billion product listings; in 2025 it said more than 2 billion are refreshed every hour. A stale price in your feed is not a small error at that pace.

Checkout is moving inside the conversation. On January 11, 2026 Google launched the Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart, to power checkout on eligible US retailers' listings in AI Mode and the Gemini app, with the retailer staying seller of record. Google announced new Merchant Center attributes for conversational commerce at the same time, a branded Business Agent chat on Search, and a Direct Offers ad pilot inside AI Mode. In May 2026 it added Universal Cart, a single cart across merchants in Search, Gemini, YouTube and Gmail, rolling out in the US.

  1. 1

Audit the feed against the site

Price, stock, shipping and returns must match the product page exactly. A feed that disagrees with the page leaves the answer with two prices and no reason to trust either.

  2. 2

    Fill the optional attributes

Materials, sizes, compatibility, care. Conversational questions are specific, and empty attributes cannot answer them.

  3. 3

    Mark up product pages

Use merchant listing structured data on pages where people can buy, matching the visible price and availability.

  4. 4

    Check the AI performance report

Merchant Center's AI performance report shows your share of voice for shopping queries in AI Mode and AI Overviews, for English queries in the US, Canada, Australia, India and New Zealand.

  5. 5

    Ask your platform about UCP

If you sell through Shopify or another major platform, find out how checkout eligibility in AI Mode is handled for your store before building anything custom.

The ecommerce and Shopify stores pages go deeper on catalogs, reviews and returns.

Reservations, robocalls and the local errand

AI Mode does things for people, and some of those things touch your business directly. Since August 2025 its restaurant reservation feature has drawn on live web browsing, Google's Knowledge Graph, Google Maps and partners including OpenTable, Resy and Tock. A restaurant missing from those partners can still be named, but AI Mode can only book the 7:30 table for four through the partners it works with.

The more surprising errand is the phone call. Google's help center says that when businesses have little information online, AI Mode can have Google call them on the user's behalf to ask about prices, availability or appointments. Google also says it may update a Business Profile using answers given to its automated calls or texts. If your front desk is getting calls from Google asking what an oil change costs, that is a signal your prices are not published anywhere it can read.

How to see what AI Mode says about you

  1. 1

Start signed out or in a private window

Personalization draws on past conversations and places you searched in Maps, so your own signed-in results flatter you. Test from a clean session first.

  2. 2

Ask the opening question a customer would

Go to google.com/ai and type it in plain words, with the town: 'best family dentist in Alamo Heights taking new patients'.

  3. 3

    Ask three follow-ups

Narrow it the way buyers do: price, timing, a specific need. Note which businesses survive each turn and which links appear beside the answer.

  4. 4

    Check Search Console

The Generative AI performance report shows how often your links appeared in AI Mode and Overviews, as impressions only. The standard Performance report under Web counts the clicks, using the same position method as a normal results page.

  5. 5

    Retailers: open Merchant Center

The AI performance report there shows shopping share of voice against competitors for eligible English-language markets.

  6. 6

    Repeat monthly

Correcting AI Mode without a correction form

Google offers thumbs up and thumbs down on AI Mode responses, and negative feedback asks you to pick a category for the problem. Use it, but do not expect it to rewrite tomorrow's answer. AI Mode is built from the same index, Business Profiles and feeds as the rest of Google, so the durable fix is in those sources. Google has also said its spam policies apply to generative AI responses, which cuts both ways: a competitor's fake reviews are reportable, and your shortcuts are punishable.

  • Wrong hours, phone or address: edit the Google Business Profile, then check Apple Business and Bing Places so the other engines agree. See wrong business information.
  • Wrong product price or stock: fix the Merchant Center feed and the product page together, so the next feed update carries the correction.
  • Outdated claims: update the page that carries them; AI cites old information explains how to find the stale source.
  • Not mentioned at all: start with AI doesn't know my business.
  • Want out entirely: the Search Console 'Search generative AI' setting removes a site from AI Mode, but also from AI Overviews. Few businesses that sell to searchers should use it.

Measuring a channel GA4 hides inside Organic Search

GA4 added an AI Assistant channel on May 13, 2026, and it deliberately excludes AI Mode and AI Overviews, which stay in Organic Search. So an owner looking at the new channel for AI Mode traffic will find nothing and conclude, wrongly, that there is none. Search Console is the better instrument here, with one quirk: because each follow-up counts as a new query, a single conversation can show up as several queries.

Much of AI Mode's value never arrives as a website visit at all. It arrives as a call from the Business Profile, a direction request or a booking. Since June 8, 2026 GA4 can link to a Google Business Profile and report its calls, bookings, direction requests, website clicks, messages and menu views over a rolling six-month window. Turn that on. The GA4 AI traffic guide covers the rest of the setup, and the GEO report page shows how we put it in front of owners.

In AI Mode, the conversion often happens before anyone visits the website. Measure the phone, not just the page.

The Gemini page covers the app, and the GEO hub maps every engine, ChatGPT included. At DataCram, AI Mode work sits inside our monthly SEO programs: Business Profile and feed cleanup, pages that answer the follow-ups, and reports that show the answers. Programs start at $625 a month, most local businesses land between $625 and $2,250, and there is no long contract. Scope is set after a free GEO audit; see GEO pricing and our AI GEO service.

Questions owners ask us about AI search

No. AI Overviews are a single summary shown above the normal results on some searches. AI Mode is a separate conversational experience, reached at google.com/ai or the AI Mode button, where users ask follow-ups, shop and book. Both draw on Google's index and both are covered by the same Search Console reports, but AI Mode adds shopping checkout, reservations and personalization.

Possibly. Google's Universal Commerce Protocol, launched in January 2026, powers checkout on eligible US retailers' listings in AI Mode and the Gemini app, with the retailer remaining seller of record. Start with an accurate Merchant Center feed and ask your commerce platform how eligibility works for your store. Eligibility rules change, so check Google's current requirements.

When a business has little information online, AI Mode can have Google call it on a user's behalf to check prices, availability or appointments. Google may also update your Business Profile from the answers. You can switch the calls off in Business Profile under Advanced settings, but publishing the information on your profile and site is the better fix.

No. Google says AI Mode personalizes some results using previous conversations and places a user searched for or tapped in Search and Maps, and users can change those settings. Answers also vary between runs. Test from a signed-out or private session, repeat each question, and compare month to month rather than trusting one screenshot.

Not in the organic answer. Google announced a Direct Offers ad pilot inside AI Mode alongside its commerce protocol, and Shopping ads are a separate paid product. The answer itself comes from Google's index, Business Profiles and product feeds. A GEO audit shows which of those sources are holding you back.

In Search Console's Performance report under Web, and in the Generative AI performance report as impressions. In GA4 it counts as Organic Search, not in the AI Assistant channel. Many AI Mode wins arrive as Business Profile calls and bookings, which GA4 can now report if you link the profile.
