Prices, out loud
GEO Pricing: What Generative Engine Optimization Costs, and Why
Somewhere right now a proposal called the AI Dominance Package is sitting in an owner's inbox with one number on it and no list of what the number buys. This page is the opposite: how GEO gets priced, what pushes the price up, and what we charge.

The short answer
Generative engine optimization is usually billed monthly, because AI answers keep shifting and the work compounds. At DataCram, GEO is part of our SEO programs, which start at $625 a month; most local businesses pay between $625 and $2,250 a month. The tier is set after a free GEO audit, and there is no long contract.

Why three GEO quotes never line up
Ask three agencies what GEO costs and you will get three numbers that cannot be compared, because they describe three different things. One is reselling a software seat with its logo on top. One is selling a monthly chart of how often a chatbot mentions you. One is selling the work of changing what the chatbot says. All three put the same four letters on the invoice.
We have not found a reliable, independent survey of what agencies charge for GEO, so this page will not quote an industry average that someone invented for a blog post. What we can do is explain the billing models, the factors that move a budget, our own numbers, and what the do-it-yourself route costs in cash and in hours. That is enough to read any proposal with a straight face.
Retainer, project or per prompt: how GEO gets billed
Monthly retainer
A fixed fee for an agreed scope: testing the answers, fixing the site and listings, building reviews and content, reporting. It fits GEO because engines change and the work builds on itself. Ask for the scope in writing and the length of any lock-in.
One-time project
A fixed price for a defined job: an audit, a listings cleanup, a rebuild so crawlers can read the site. Good when the problem is specific. Weak as a whole strategy, because the answers keep moving after the project ends.
Per-prompt tracking
Software priced by how many questions it asks the engines. As of October 2026, Otterly.AI's Standard plan tracks 100 prompts for $189 a month. Tracking reports the weather. It does not change it.
Many proposals blend all three: a setup project, then a retainer, with a tracking tool resold underneath. That is fine when each piece is named and priced. It is a problem when the subscription is most of the bill and the work is a monthly export of the tool's charts with a cover page. Ask which line items produce a change in the answers, and what that change is.
Six things that push a GEO budget up or down
- How contested the questions are. "Best personal injury lawyer in Houston" is fought over by firms with large budgets; "piano tuner in Kerrville" is not. Crowded questions need more content, more mentions and more patience.
- How many places you serve. Each location has its own listings, reviews and local questions. Ten branches are not ten times the work, but they are not one.
- What shape the site is in. Pages whose text appears only after JavaScript runs, or a robots.txt that blocks the AI search crawlers, need repair before anything else pays off.
- How tangled the listings are. Old addresses, duplicate profiles and a phone number from 2017 take hours to hunt down across Google, Apple, Bing and the directories.
- How thin the public record is. Few reviews and no press, directory or forum mentions leave an engine little to corroborate, and leave more to build.
- Whether a compliance officer reads every word. Financial, medical and legal content moves at the speed of its review, and the program has to allow for that.
This is why we do not quote GEO from a menu. Two roofers in the same city can need very different programs: one to fix a site the crawlers cannot read, the other only to earn the mentions a competitor already has. The page on how AI chooses which businesses to name explains why each factor counts.
DataCram's GEO price, in plain numbers
GEO is not a separate line item here. It is part of our monthly SEO programs, because the work overlaps so heavily that billing it twice would mean two invoices for one set of fixes. Programs start at $625 a month, and most local businesses end up between $625 and $2,250 a month, as listed on the SEO pricing page. The terms are short:
- No long contract. You stay because the answers improve, not because a clause says so.
- A defined scope. The work for your tier is written down before you pay for it.
- The audit comes first. Your tier is set after a free GEO audit, once we have seen what the engines say and what needs fixing.
- Financing is available. Monthly programs can be financed through SEO financing.
If the audit shows the website itself is the obstacle, a rebuild is quoted separately at a fixed price: custom sites and rebuilds start at $1,750, and sites with a store, portal or web app start at $3,500. Every site we build runs on Next.js with Athena CMS, so the words are in the HTML that AI crawlers read. Plenty of sites need repairs rather than a rebuild, and we will say so.
What $625 covers, and what the top of the range adds
The gap between $625 and $2,250 a month is not a better grade of effort. It is more surface: more questions, more competitors, more pages and more places to be mentioned. Here is how the work typically scales across the range, using the same list of tasks at every level.
Nearer $625 a month
- One location in a market where a handful of competitors share the AI answers
- Your customers' core questions run through the AI engines and tracked over time
- Crawler access, structured data and speed fixes on the existing site
- Cleanup on Google Business Profile, Apple Business, Bing Places and the key directories
- Review requests and replies, and pages that answer the questions you are missing
Toward $2,250 a month
- Several locations, or a crowded, high-value market
- A larger question set with more variations by service and town
- More new content each month, aimed at the gaps competitors fill
- Steady work earning mentions in the publications, directories and associations engines cite
- Deeper competitor and cited-source analysis
The do-it-yourself bill, line by line
You can run GEO yourself, and the most important tools are free. Search Console has a Generative AI performance report, Bing Webmaster Tools reports Copilot citations, GA4 has an AI Assistant channel, and Google Business Profile, Apple Business and Bing Places cost nothing. For automated tracking across ChatGPT, Perplexity and the rest, these are the published entry prices as of October 2026:
| Entry price | What the entry plan covers | Next step up | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rankscale | $17/mo, billed yearly (Essentials) | Credit-based tracking across ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and others | Pro, $99/mo for 1,200 credits |
| Otterly.AI | $29/mo (Lite) | 15 prompts in ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot | Standard, $189/mo for 100 prompts |
| Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit | $99/mo per domain, billed annually | 25 custom prompts with daily AI rankings | Semrush One Starter, $199/mo for 50 daily prompts |
| SE Ranking | $89/mo AI Search add-on, on a plan from $129/mo | AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity and ChatGPT | Growth plan, $279/mo plus the add-on |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | From $199/mo | Mentions and citations in ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot | Custom prompt packs from $50/mo |
| Scrunch | $300/mo, or $250/mo billed annually | 350 custom prompts | Growth, $500/mo for 700 prompts |
| Profound | Free 7-day trial | 50 daily prompts on ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews | Enterprise, price not published |
Then add the part no subscription includes: your hours. Someone still rewrites the service pages, chases duplicate listings, asks for reviews, answers them and reruns the questions every month. The GEO tools comparison goes tool by tool, and prompt tracking explains how many questions are worth paying to watch.
DIY, a tracking tool or a managed program, side by side
| Do it yourself | Tracking tool alone | Managed program (DataCram) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly cash cost | $0 in software | From $17 to several hundred dollars, by published plans as of October 2026 | From $625; most local businesses $625 to $2,250 |
| Who asks the engines | You, by hand | The tool, on a schedule | We do, and track the answers over time |
| Who fixes the site and listings | You | You | We do, within the written scope |
| Reviews and mentions | You ask and reply | Not included | Review generation, replies and earned mentions |
| What you see each month | Your own notes | Charts and a visibility score | The answers, the sources cited and what changed |
| Main risk | It slides when the busy season starts | Paying to watch a problem nobody fixes | Buying help you did not need, which the audit should catch |
| Best for | One location, light competition, spare hours | In-house marketers who can do the fixes | Owners who want the work done and measured |
Two other routes sit between the columns. In-house marketers who want a plan and a second opinion rather than a managed program can use GEO consulting. Teams that only want someone watching the answers each month and flagging changes can start with AI visibility monitoring.

When we will tell you to keep your money
A pricing page that says everyone needs the product is a brochure. Some businesses are better served by a free tool, a guide and an hour a month than by any agency, ours included. These are the situations where we will tell you not to hire us, or not yet.
- The engines already name you for the questions that matter, your details are right and nobody is closing in. Rerun the free check every month or two.
- Your budget is under $625 a month. Use the free tools above and our guides to getting mentioned by ChatGPT and generative engine optimization; they cover most of what we would do first.
- You want a guarantee. No one can promise what an AI engine will say. We can show you what raises the odds, and show you the answers every month.
- The real problem is elsewhere. If Google cannot index your site at all, or leads arrive and do not convert, fix that first. Our AI search problems page helps sort which is which.
Questions owners ask us about AI search
At DataCram, GEO is part of monthly SEO programs that start at $625 a month, and most local businesses pay between $625 and $2,250. The tier is set after a free GEO audit, based on how competitive your customers' questions are and how much the site, listings and content need. There is no long contract, and financing is available.
Because most of it is the same work. AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Google's index, Copilot on Bing's, and outside tests have found ChatGPT's citations closely tracking Bing's results. A crawlable site, clean listings and strong pages serve every one of them. Splitting that into two programs would charge you twice for one set of fixes. See GEO vs SEO.
Yes: do it yourself with the free tools (Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, GA4 and your listings), and add a tracker if you want automation. As of October 2026, Otterly.AI's Lite plan is $29 a month for 15 prompts and Rankscale's Essentials plan is $17 a month billed yearly. Start with the free AI visibility check to see where you stand.
Yes. Our monthly SEO programs, which include GEO, can be financed; the options are on the SEO financing page. The audit and the quote come first, so you know the monthly figure and the written scope before you decide anything.
Then the audit says so, and the rebuild is quoted separately at a fixed price: custom sites and rebuilds start at $1,750, and sites with a store, portal or web app start at $3,500. Many sites need fixes instead, such as unblocking AI crawlers or moving key text into the HTML, and those fall inside the monthly program.
No, and be wary of pricing that implies it. A larger budget buys more work: more questions tracked, more content, more mentions earned, more locations covered. That raises the odds in a crowded market. It does not buy a spot, because no one outside the AI companies controls the answers. Our AI and GEO search optimization page describes the work itself.
