Engine guide: Apple
How to Get Recommended by Siri and Apple Intelligence, Now That Siri Reads the Web
For years, getting on Siri meant one thing: a correct Apple Maps listing. In September 2026 Apple released Siri AI, built on Gemini-based models and able to answer from the open web. The listing still matters. Now your website and your reviews do too.

The short answer
To get recommended by Siri and Apple Intelligence, claim and complete your free Apple Business listing, which feeds Apple Maps, Siri, Safari and Spotlight; let Applebot crawl your site; keep your Yelp profile accurate, since Apple Maps reportedly shows Yelp reviews; and publish plain, crawlable facts that Siri AI can find when it searches the web.

Siri used to read a listing. Siri AI reads the web too.
Classic Siri answered a local question by asking Apple Maps: which coffee shops are close, which are open, what is the number. Our voice search series covers that path in detail, from getting your business on Siri to fixing wrong hours on Siri, and none of it has stopped mattering. This page is about the layer Apple added on top.
In January 2026 Apple and Google said the next generation of Apple Foundation Models would be based on Google's Gemini models. In September 2026 Apple released Siri AI as a beta in English, saying it can draw on broad world knowledge and information from across the web to answer questions. One of Apple's own examples is finding the best local coffee spot in a new city. It needs a supported device, such as an iPhone 15 Pro or an iPhone 16 or later, and Apple said it would not be available at first in the EU or China. French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish were announced for October.
Apple has not said which search index Siri AI queries, how it weighs what it finds, or whether it shows links. So this page sticks to what Apple documents and what an owner controls, and says so where the trail goes cold.
The four places Apple gets what it says about you
Apple Maps place data
Name, address, hours, phone, category and photos, managed in Apple Business. Maps, Siri, Safari and Spotlight all show it. If you never claimed the listing, Apple filled it in from other sources.
Applebot's web index
Apple says data crawled by Applebot powers search features in Spotlight, Siri and Safari. This is the route by which your own pages reach Apple's answers.
Review partners
In the US, Apple Maps reviews and photos come mainly from Yelp, Tripadvisor and Foursquare alongside Apple's own ratings, with Yelp the most common source as of July 2024, according to press reports.
The ChatGPT handoff
Apple documented a ChatGPT extension with its 2024 Apple Intelligence release: Siri can pass some requests to ChatGPT, asking the user first and hiding their IP address. When that happens, ChatGPT's sources decide the answer.
Notice what is missing from Apple's documentation: your Google Business Profile. A business with a spotless Google listing and an unclaimed Apple one is telling two different stories, and on an iPhone the Apple story is the one Maps tells. Keeping every listing identical is entity optimization in practice. When Siri hands off, our ChatGPT guide applies, so check whether the extension is offered in Apple Intelligence settings on your own phone.
Applebot, Applebot-Extended and the Googlebot fallback
Apple's crawler rules are short and contain one trap. Applebot crawls for Spotlight, Siri and Safari. Applebot-Extended is not a crawler at all: it is a robots.txt token that decides whether Applebot's data may train Apple's foundation models, and disallowing it does not remove pages from Apple's search results. The trap is the fallback. If robots.txt says nothing about Applebot but has rules for Googlebot, Applebot obeys the Googlebot rules.
| Applebot | Applebot-Extended | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Apple's web crawler | A control token; it does not crawl |
| What it feeds | Search in Spotlight, Siri and Safari | Whether crawled data can train Apple's foundation models |
| Disallowing it | Takes pages out of Apple's crawl, and out of the index those features search | Opts out of training only; pages can still appear in Apple search results |
| If robots.txt never names it | Follows your Googlebot rules | Nothing is opted out |
| JavaScript | Apple says it may render pages in a browser; Vercel's 2024 analysis agreed | Not applicable |
| Crawl-delay | Ignored, per Apple | Not applicable |
| Verifying a visit | Reverse DNS ending in applebot.apple.com, or Apple's published IP list | Not applicable |
The fallback binds Applebot to every Googlebot rule you ever wrote: staging folders, internal search pages, sometimes a whole subdomain. Usually that is what you want. Occasionally it is a forgotten line from a redesign years ago that hides service pages from Siri as well as Google. Our page on robots.txt blocking Google shows how to find one, and AI crawlers lists every other company's tokens.
- To stay in Siri's web answers but out of Apple's training: User-agent: Applebot-Extended with Disallow: /, and no Disallow for Applebot.
- To give Apple different rules from Google: add a User-agent: Applebot group, which replaces the fallback.
- To let Applebot render the page: leave JavaScript and CSS files open. Apple warns it may not render properly if they are blocked.
- To slow Applebot down: use your server or CDN, because Applebot ignores Crawl-delay.
Apple Business is the listing, and the listing is half the answer
Apple Business replaced Apple Business Connect on April 14, 2026, folding it together with Apple Business Essentials and Apple Business Manager into one free platform available in more than 200 countries and regions. If an older guide tells you to open Business Connect, this is where it went. It manages your brand name and logo across Maps, Wallet and other Apple features, and place cards whose photos, hours and location details show in Maps, Safari and Spotlight. It adds showcases and custom actions such as ordering or reserving, and Apple says it helps businesses connect with customers on Siri.
The claiming steps are in our Siri guide, so here is only what Siri AI changes. A place card used to be read aloud field by field. Now it is one source among several that a model can weigh against your website and your reviews. Nobody outside Apple knows which source wins when they disagree, which is the best argument for making sure they never do.
Six questions to put to an iPhone this week
- 1
Get a device that runs Siri AI
You need a supported model with Apple Intelligence on and Siri set to English. An older phone gives you classic Siri, which only tests the Maps side. Borrow a newer one if you have to.
- 2
Ask the map question
'Find a [your trade] near me that's open now.' Listen for the name, the hours and the number. This tests your Apple Maps place card.
- 3
Ask the judgment question
'Who is the best [your trade] in [your town] for [a specific job]?' This invites Siri AI to reach for web knowledge. Write down what it says and whether it shows any sources.
- 4
Ask about yourself
'What do you know about [business name] in [town]?' A wrong fact here points to your website, your listings or the reviews Apple displays.
- 5
Watch for the handoff
If Siri offers to ask ChatGPT, accept once and record that answer separately. It comes from ChatGPT's sources, not Apple's.
- 6
Type it into Spotlight and Safari
Enter your business name and your trade. Suggestions there draw on the same Applebot data, and a missing site is easier to spot on a screen than in a spoken answer.
Log the answers with the date and the place you asked from, since local answers depend on location. The free voice search check looks at the listings the classic assistants read. The AI visibility check puts the same customer question to ChatGPT and other engines through their APIs and shows who each one named, so you can see where Apple agrees with the rest.
What tips Siri AI toward your name
- Finish Apple Business before anything else. Category, hours, holiday hours, phone, website and photos, verified and current.
- Make Yelp match it. If Apple Maps leans on Yelp for reviews, a Yelp page with old hours or a dead number undercuts a perfect place card.
- Let Applebot read the site. No stray Googlebot block, no blocked scripts or stylesheets, and service pages that state hours, areas and prices in plain sentences.
- Write what a model can repeat. Apple's own example is a request for the best local coffee spot. Your page should say what you are best at, where and for whom, with facts in place of adjectives. Content AI can quote shows the pattern.
- Collect reviews honestly and steadily. The FTC rule in force since October 21, 2024 bans fake and AI-generated reviews and review suppression. See reviews and AI recommendations.
- Do the other engines' work too. Siri can hand questions to ChatGPT, and the same site and reviews feed Gemini and Claude, whose iPhone app opens places in Apple Maps.
In a DataCram GEO program, this is entity cleanup and crawlability: Apple Business, Google Business Profile and Bing Places brought into line, robots.txt checked for the fallback trap, and customer questions tested across engines every month. On sites we build, the Hestia agent in Athena keeps hours and holiday hours identical everywhere. Programs start at $625 a month, and GEO pricing explains how the tier is set. For assistants beyond Siri, see voice and ambient assistant optimization.
Correcting Siri when it gets you wrong
Start with the source Apple controls. Owners edit the place card in Apple Business, which is where Apple sends business owners who report problems in Maps. Anyone can use Report an Issue in Apple Maps to flag a wrong place, and reports from the last 90 days can be reviewed there. If the wrong fact is a review or a photo, it probably came from a partner, so correct it on Yelp, Tripadvisor or Foursquare.
Siri AI's web answers are harder. Apple publishes no owner channel for them and has not said how often Applebot recrawls. Fix the page that states the wrong fact, yours or a directory's, and recheck in a few weeks. The multi-engine version of this problem is in AI has wrong business information, and if Siri sends callers to a rival, see voice assistant recommends a competitor.
Apple's numbers, and the visits your analytics will miss
Apple Business includes Maps insights: searches, views and taps on actions. That is the closest thing Apple offers to a report on how often iPhone users find you, and it is worth a monthly look.
GA4 helps less. Its AI Assistant channel, added May 13, 2026, lists sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot and Grok; Apple's assistants are not named, and Apple documents no referrer for Siri answers. A visitor who taps your website on a place card may show up as direct traffic. One workaround is our practice, not an Apple rule: put a UTM tag on the website link in Apple Business, such as utm_source=apple-maps, so those visits arrive labeled. Tracking AI traffic in GA4 covers the rest.
Apple, Gemini and Claude on the points an owner controls
| Siri and Apple Intelligence | Gemini | Claude | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local place data | Apple Maps, managed in Apple Business | Google Maps public information, including ratings and reviews | iOS app opens places in Apple Maps; source not published |
| Web crawler | Applebot | Google's existing crawlers | Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User |
| Training opt-out token | Applebot-Extended | Google-Extended | ClaudeBot |
| Does the opt-out touch answers? | No; pages can still appear in Apple search | Yes; Google-Extended also covers grounding in the Gemini apps | Anthropic describes ClaudeBot as training only |
| Shows sources | Not documented for Siri AI | Sometimes, through a Sources button | Yes, with citations and quotes |
| Owner dashboard | Apple Business, free | Google Business Profile, free | None |
| Analytics | Maps insights in Apple Business; no documented referrer | GA4 AI Assistant channel | GA4 AI Assistant channel, from claude.ai |
Apple is the one engine of the three where an owner gets a real dashboard, and the one whose AI layer is least documented. Start where you have control. The generative engine optimization guide compares all eight engines, and ambient assistants covers the screenless devices where Siri answers out loud. When you want it done for you, the free GEO audit is the first step.
Questions owners ask us about AI search
Apple and Google said the next generation of Apple Foundation Models is based on Gemini models. That describes the model, not the search results. Apple has not said which web index Siri AI uses, and it documents that Siri's search features use data crawled by Applebot. Local answers still run through Apple Maps. Treat your Google ranking and your Apple presence as separate jobs.
It replaced it. Apple Business launched on April 14, 2026 and combined Apple Business Connect, Apple Business Essentials and Apple Business Manager into one free platform. The place card, brand and Maps insight tools now live there. Guides that still say Business Connect describe the same listing under its old name.
It depends on how you feel about Apple training its models on your pages, and it does not affect search. Apple says pages that disallow Applebot-Extended can still appear in its search results. What you must not do is block Applebot itself, directly or through the Googlebot fallback, if you want Siri and Spotlight to read your site.
Apple has announced no paid placement inside Siri's answers. What it sells is Ads on Apple Maps, bought through Apple Business in the US and Canada, which can appear at the top of Maps search results and in Suggested Places. That buys a spot in Maps, not a recommendation. An accurate listing and honest reviews are the free route.
Because Siri's local answers do not start from your Google ranking. They start in Apple Maps, where a competitor may have a claimed place card, better hours data or more Yelp reviews. Check your Apple Business listing first, then your Yelp page. Voice assistant recommends a competitor walks through the rest.
No. Apple released it as a beta in English in September 2026 for supported devices, including the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 or later, with five more languages announced for October and no EU or China availability at launch. Older iPhones keep classic Siri, which answers local questions from Apple Maps, so the listing work serves both.
