AI search for software
GEO for SaaS: How Software Companies Get Recommended by ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity
A sales manager asks ChatGPT for the best CRM for a ten-person team. The answer names four products, sorts them by price and notes which ones sync with her inbox. She books two demos before opening a single vendor site. Your pricing page says "Contact sales." You can guess which two she booked.

The short answer
GEO for SaaS means making your product easy for ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI answers to describe, compare and recommend for the right use case. The inputs are a crawlable site with public pricing, integration and security facts, honest review volume on G2 and Capterra, fair comparison pages, and mentions in the places software buyers research.
On this page
- Shortlists now arrive pre-compared
- G2 now owns Capterra, and both are courting the models
- Your robots.txt is a go-to-market decision
- One gift card, four different verdicts on review requests
- Pricing, comparison and security pages that answer before the demo
- Measuring a pipeline that starts in a chat window
- A software company's first thirty days of AI search work
- Managed program, consulting, or an in-house sprint
Shortlists now arrive pre-compared
Software buying used to begin with a search, a listicle and a dozen tabs. Now the first draft of the shortlist is written by a model, complete with a comparison table nobody at your company approved. The questions are national, specific and often about you by name:
- "Best CRM for a 10-person sales team."
- "[Your product] vs [competitor]: which is better for agencies?"
- "Alternatives to [competitor] that are cheaper."
- "Does [your product] integrate with QuickBooks?"
- "Is [your product] SOC 2 compliant?"
- "How much does [your product] cost per seat?"
Category questions draw on review sites, listicles and forum threads. Comparison, integration and security questions can only be answered well from your own pages, or, if you have none, from a competitor's version of you. SEO is still the base layer. In a January 2025 Seer Interactive study of finance and SaaS queries on GPT-4o, page-one Google rankings correlated about 0.65 with brand mentions in the answers, while backlinks showed weak or no correlation. Correlation is not cause, as brand mentions versus backlinks explains, but it is a strong hint about where to start.
G2 now owns Capterra, and both are courting the models
On January 29, 2026, G2 agreed to buy Capterra, Software Advice and GetApp from Gartner. G2 says the combined platforms hold nearly 6 million verified reviews and reach more than 200 million software buyers a year, and it pitches that data for AI and LLM recommendations. Most of the software review record now sits under one owner. Here is where a model learns about your product, and what each source asks of you.
| Source | Why the models read it | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| G2 | Publishes a page written for AI systems that explains its verification and scoring, asks AI tools to credit "G2 reviewers," and offers category Grid data as JSON | Correct categories, a complete profile, and a steady flow of reviews gathered under G2's rules |
| Capterra, Software Advice, GetApp | Capterra says it uses more than 30 human moderators and more than 20 checks per review, including conflict-of-interest and AI-text checks | Keep descriptions, pricing and integrations identical to G2 and your site |
| Product Hunt | Launch pages persist as public mentions; ranking uses upvotes, comments, time since submission and undisclosed factors | Launch honestly; Product Hunt says paying anyone to hunt or send traffic can bring removal or a ban |
| Reddit and forums | A March 2026 Peec AI analysis of 30 million citations ranked Reddit the most-cited domain across five engines (a tool vendor's study; results varied by industry) | Answer questions openly as staff; never plant praise |
| Your docs, pricing and changelog | Read by OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot when they are allowed in | Public, server-rendered, dated pages |
Google is not the only index that counts here. Press reports say Claude's web search appears to use Brave Search, which Anthropic had not confirmed at the time; Microsoft says Copilot runs on Bing's index; and Seer Interactive found in February 2025 that 87% or more of ChatGPT search citations matched Bing's top organic results. A SaaS company that only watches Google rankings is watching one scoreboard of three. Engine detail: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity. Forum strategy without astroturf is in Reddit, forums and directories.
Your robots.txt is a go-to-market decision
Somebody on the platform team once added a block for every AI bot to keep the docs out of training data. It probably also took the product out of AI search. The vendors split training from search, and the distinction decides whether you can be cited at all:
- OpenAI: GPTBot is the training crawler. OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, and OpenAI says sites that block it will not appear in ChatGPT search answers. Changes take about 24 hours to register.
- Anthropic: ClaudeBot collects training data. Claude-SearchBot indexes for search and Claude-User fetches pages when someone asks Claude a question; Anthropic says blocking either may reduce visibility.
- Perplexity: PerplexityBot surfaces and links sites in Perplexity results and is not used for model training. Perplexity-User fetches on a user's request and, Perplexity says, generally ignores robots.txt.
- Google: the Google-Extended token governs Gemini training and grounding in the Gemini apps. It does not affect Google Search, AI Overviews or AI Mode.
- Apple: Applebot feeds Siri, Spotlight and Safari search; Applebot-Extended only controls training.
Rendering is the second gate. Vercel's December 2024 analysis found the crawlers from OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity did not execute JavaScript. A marketing site built as a single-page app, or a pricing table drawn by a script, can look empty to them. Next.js and other server-rendered setups put the words in the HTML; so does a well-built WordPress or Webflow site. The full token table is in AI crawlers, and the curl test is in JavaScript and AI crawlers.
One gift card, four different verdicts on review requests
Review volume is the SaaS currency, and every platform prints its own. The law sets the floor; the platforms build higher walls on top of it.
- The FTC review rule (16 CFR Part 465, effective October 21, 2024) bans fake and AI-generated reviews, incentives conditioned on positive or negative sentiment, undisclosed reviews by officers, managers, employees or relatives, company-controlled "independent" review sites, review suppression and bought followers. Asking every customer for an honest review is allowed.
- The FTC Endorsement Guides (revised 2023) require clear disclosure of material connections such as payment, free product or employment, say not to ask only the customers you expect to be happy, and require advertisers to train and monitor endorsers, affiliates included.
- G2 requires incentives to be disclosed (incentivized reviews are labeled), caps them at $100, bans incentives conditioned on positive reviews and selective solicitation, and bars reviews by the vendor's employees or direct competitors.
- Capterra says it offers reviewers nominal incentives paid regardless of rating.
- Trustpilot requires inviting all customers the same way at the same point and forbids incentives of any kind, selective invitations, employee or family reviews and pressure.
- Subscription terms. The Eighth Circuit vacated the FTC's 2024 click-to-cancel rule, and the FTC opened a new advance notice of proposed rulemaking on March 11, 2026. The existing Negative Option Rule and ROSCA are still enforced, so plans need clear terms, consent and a workable way to cancel.
Pricing, comparison and security pages that answer before the demo
Engines compare products using whatever facts they can find. If you do not publish yours, they use a reseller's, a review site's or a competitor's. These pages close that gap.
Public pricing
Per-seat prices, plan limits, renewal terms and what each tier includes. "Contact sales" for enterprise is fine. Hiding every number leaves the engine to quote a guess.
Fair comparison pages
You versus each main rival, including where the rival wins. A balanced page gets quoted; a hit piece reads like an ad and gets treated like one.
Alternatives pages
For buyers leaving a named competitor: what migrates, what it costs, how long the switch takes.
One page per integration
What syncs, in which direction, on which plan. "Integrates with 200 tools" answers none of the integration questions buyers ask.
A security page with dates
The reports you actually hold, the date of the latest audit and how to request it. Never claim a certification you do not have; an engine will repeat it.
Docs and changelog in HTML
Dated, public, crawlable. Ahrefs found ChatGPT shows the strongest preference for newer content, and Claude's search results carry a page age field.
For markup, Google's software app rich result uses SoftwareApplication with a name, an offer price (zero if free) and either an aggregate rating or a review, under its review snippet guidelines. Microsoft recommends JSON-LD schema to help its AI systems interpret content, while Google says its AI features need no special markup. Add Organization markup on the homepage and keep everything identical to the visible text. Content AI can quote covers the writing side.
Measuring a pipeline that starts in a chat window
Since May 13, 2026, GA4 has an AI Assistant channel for visits referred by ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and similar tools. It excludes Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, which stay in Organic Search, and AI apps that send no referrer still land in Direct. Bing Webmaster Tools reports Copilot citations, and Search Console's generative AI report shows AI Overview and AI Mode impressions only. As practice, add "an AI assistant" to the how-did-you-hear field on your demo form; it catches what analytics misses. The setup is in tracking AI traffic in GA4, and the math behind AI share of voice explains how to compare yourself against rivals without fooling yourself.
A software company's first thirty days of AI search work
- 1
Build the prompt set
Twenty to thirty questions across category, comparison, alternatives, integration and security. Run a few through our free AI visibility check, which queries engines through their APIs live and shows who was named; API answers can differ a little from the apps. Prompt tracking covers set design.
- 2
Audit robots.txt and rendering
Allow the search crawlers you want to be cited by, decide on the training crawlers separately, and confirm pricing and docs appear in the raw HTML.
- 3
Reconcile every profile
G2, Capterra, Software Advice, GetApp, Product Hunt and your site should agree on category, pricing and integrations.
- 4
Publish the missing facts
Public pricing, the top three integration pages and a dated security page come first.
- 5
Write two fair comparison pages
Against the rivals the engines named most often in step one.
- 6
Launch a compliant review request
Every customer, same moment in the lifecycle, designed for the strictest platform you use.
- 7
Rerun and record the sources
Ask the same questions on day thirty and log which pages each engine cited.
Managed program, consulting, or an in-house sprint
Our GEO work runs inside a monthly SEO program: defined scope, no long contract, starting at $625 a month. Most local businesses pay $625 to $2,250 (SEO pricing); a software company competing nationally for crowded category questions should expect the free GEO audit to place it by how contested those questions are and how much the site needs. GEO pricing lists what moves the number, and financing exists. We monitor with AICiteBeam, which DataCram built on Next.js, Supabase and the Vercel AI SDK to track whether ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews name a brand, which sources they cite and how competitor share of voice moves.
A SaaS company that only watches Google rankings is watching one scoreboard of three.
The honest note: many SaaS teams already have a content marketer and a developer, and they can run most of this as an in-house sprint. For them, GEO consulting delivers a plan, a prompt set and a fix list without a retainer, and AI visibility monitoring adds tracking. If the marketing site itself needs a rebuild, our SaaS industry page covers it. Neighbors in this family: fintech shares the compliance questions, e-commerce shares the comparison shopping, and the rest are in our industry guides.
Questions owners ask us about AI search
That is a training decision, separate from visibility. Blocking GPTBot tells OpenAI not to train on your content; it does not remove you from ChatGPT search, which OAI-SearchBot governs. Block OAI-SearchBot and you will not appear in ChatGPT search answers. A common setup blocks training crawlers and allows search crawlers. Decide each token on purpose.
Nobody outside OpenAI can prove a direct line. What is documented: G2 publishes a page addressed to AI systems, offers machine-readable category data, and pitches its reviews for AI and LLM recommendations. A complete, active G2 profile is a reasonable bet. A profile padded with gated or incentivized reviews is a risk on every platform.
It depends on the platform. G2 allows disclosed incentives up to $100 that are not tied to a positive review, Capterra offers nominal incentives regardless of rating, and Trustpilot forbids incentives of any kind. The FTC bans incentives conditioned on sentiment everywhere. Design the request for the strictest platform you send customers to, and have counsel review it.
Publish what you can: starting prices, per-seat ranges, plan limits and renewal terms, with "contact sales" for custom contracts. Engines asked about cost will answer with something; a number you published beats a reseller's guess. Clear renewal terms also help with the FTC's negative option enforcement, which still applies to subscriptions.
Use three instruments. GA4's AI Assistant channel counts referred visits (not AI Overviews or AI Mode, which sit in Organic Search). Bing's AI Performance report and Search Console's generative AI report show citations and impressions. And a self-reported "AI assistant" option on the demo form catches the visits with no referrer.
It is part of our monthly SEO programs, which start at $625 a month with no long contract; most local businesses pay $625 to $2,250. National software categories are often more contested, so the free GEO audit sets the tier. Teams with in-house writers may only need consulting.
