Engine guide: ChatGPT
How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT: The Crawler, the Bing Connection and the Short List
A homeowner in Helotes types 'who repairs foundation cracks near me' into ChatGPT at 11:40 at night. Three names come back. Nobody scrolls to a fourth. This page is about the machinery behind those three names, and what you can do about each part of it.

The short answer
To get recommended by ChatGPT, let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site, make sure Bing indexes and ranks your pages, because studies find ChatGPT search citations closely match Bing's results, and keep your business facts identical everywhere. Then earn independent mentions, publish pages that state prices, areas and services plainly, and test the same customer questions every month.

Two ChatGPTs answer your customers
There is the ChatGPT that remembers and the ChatGPT that looks things up. The first answers from what its model absorbed in training, a snapshot of the public web gathered by OpenAI's GPTBot and other sources. It never shows a link. The second runs a web search, reads what comes back and cites it. That is the one that recommends a plumber with a phone number attached, and the one you can influence this quarter.
OpenAI's help center says web search is available on all ChatGPT plans, Free included, and to people who are not signed in, and that ChatGPT can use a shared device location to answer questions about nearby businesses, passing that location to third-party providers of business listings. So a local question can be answered three ways at once: memory, live web pages, and listing data. If you want the plain-English basics first (consistency, reviews, why there is no submit button), our guide on getting your business mentioned by ChatGPT covers them. This page is the machinery.
Training memory
Built from crawled pages, GPTBot's among them. It changes only with a newer model, so you influence it slowly.
Live search
Fetched through OAI-SearchBot and third-party search providers, with numbered citations. Most of the work pays off here.
Location-aware local answers
When a user shares location, ChatGPT can pull nearby business listings from outside providers. Your listings have to be right before this helps you.
Shopping results
Product cards with prices and merchants. OpenAI said in 2025 they are chosen independently and are not ads. Feeds are a separate, application-only door.
Why a Bing ranking matters more than you think
OpenAI has said ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers alongside content supplied directly by partners. It does not name them, but the evidence points one way. Independent testing in November 2024 found ChatGPT search results matching Bing's, and a February 2025 Seer Interactive test of about 500 citations found 87% or more matched Bing's top organic results, against 56% for Google. The practical meaning for an owner: a site Bing cannot find, or ranks on page four, starts the race limping.
Most small businesses have never opened Bing Webmaster Tools, the cheapest gap on this page. Verify the site, submit the sitemap, and use IndexNow, which Microsoft recommends for telling Bing about updates, so a corrected price or a new service page is seen in days rather than whenever the crawler wanders by. Then claim the listing in Bing Places, which moved to bing.com/forbusiness in October 2025 and can import your Google profile in a few clicks.
| Share of sources | What it means for you | |
|---|---|---|
| Business websites | 58% | Your own pages are the largest single source. Service, area and pricing pages have to say the facts in text a crawler can read. |
| Third-party mentions | 27% | Local news, association pages, supplier dealer lists. Wikipedia made up 39% of these mentions, which matters only for notable businesses. |
| Directories | 15% | Yelp, Facebook and Google Maps did not appear as directory sources in the study. Check which directories rank in Bing for your trade. |
| Reddit and Quora | None found | OpenAI has a 2024 Reddit data deal, but the local study saw no forum citations. Peec AI's 2026 analysis across all query types ranked Reddit first, so forums matter more outside local searches. |
Treat those shares as a late-2024 snapshot, not a law. Two later findings point the same way. Ahrefs found in 2025 that ChatGPT showed the strongest preference for newer content of any assistant it studied, and Seer Interactive found page-one Google rankings correlated about 0.65 with brand mentions in GPT-4o answers for finance and SaaS queries. Good search rankings in both engines remain the foundation; see GEO vs SEO for where the two part ways.
Three robots.txt lines that decide whether you can be cited
OpenAI runs three agents, and confusing them is an easy mistake with an expensive result. One trains models, one finds pages for search, one fetches a page when a user asks. OpenAI documents all three on its crawler page and publishes IP lists for each, so you can tell a real visit from an impostor in your server logs.
| Job | If you block it | |
|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | Finds and surfaces sites in ChatGPT search | You will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though OpenAI says a bare navigational link can still appear |
| GPTBot | Collects content that may train OpenAI's foundation models | Your future content is left out of training. Search appearance is unaffected |
| ChatGPT-User | Visits a page when a user's action in ChatGPT or a custom GPT needs it | OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply, because a person started the request |
- To stay searchable but out of training: 'User-agent: GPTBot' with 'Disallow: /', and leave OAI-SearchBot alone. That split keeps you citable while opting out of training.
- To check you are not blocked by accident: open yoursite.com/robots.txt and look for OAI-SearchBot, a blanket 'User-agent: *' disallow, or a firewall rule written to stop 'AI bots' in general.
- After any change: OpenAI says its search systems take about 24 hours to adjust to a robots.txt update.
- To keep a page out entirely: OpenAI's publisher FAQ says a disallowed URL found elsewhere may still show as a link and title; a noindex meta tag stops that.
How to check what ChatGPT says about you
- 1
Write the questions customers actually type
Ten to twenty, in their words, with a town in most of them: 'best roofer for hail damage in Schertz', 'is [your company] any good', 'who installs tankless water heaters near Stone Oak'. Keep the list fixed so months compare.
- 2
Ask with search on, in a fresh chat
Use a new conversation each time, signed in and signed out. Saved memories and past chats can color signed-in answers. Add the city to the question rather than relying on device location.
- 3
Open the sources
Expand the citations and write down every domain. The list tells you which pages ChatGPT trusts for your category, and which of them mention your competitors and not you.
- 4
Ask about yourself directly
'What do you know about [business name] in [city]?' Read the answer for wrong hours, old addresses, discontinued services and confused identities. Each error points to a page or listing somewhere.
- 5
Repeat three times and log it
Answers vary run to run, so one mention in three runs differs from three in three. A spreadsheet of date, question, names and sources will do.
- 6
Run the free check for a second opinion
Our AI visibility check puts a question to ChatGPT and other engines through their APIs and shows who was named. API answers can differ a little from the app, so use it alongside your own tests.
If logging forty answers a month sounds like a chore you will drop by March, there are prompt tracking tools and our AI visibility monitoring. Our own platform, AICiteBeam, tracks whether ChatGPT and the other engines name and cite a brand, which sources they lean on, and alerts when that moves.
Raising your odds, in the order that pays
No one controls the answer, and anyone selling a guaranteed spot in ChatGPT is selling a screenshot. What you can control is the evidence ChatGPT finds when it goes looking. This is the order we work in, because each step makes the next one count for more.
- 1
Open the door
Allow OAI-SearchBot, server-render the key pages, and fix anything that returns errors to bots. Ten minutes for most sites.
- 2
Get into Bing properly
Bing Webmaster Tools, a clean sitemap, IndexNow, and a complete Bing Places listing that matches Google character for character.
- 3
Settle the entity
One name, address, phone and description on the site, Google, Bing, Apple Business and the trade directories. See entity optimization for the full audit.
- 4
Publish the facts ChatGPT wants to quote
Price ranges, service areas by town, license numbers, warranties, brands serviced, response times. Stated in sentences, on pages that load fast. Our notes on content AI can quote go further.
- 5
Earn mentions on pages Bing ranks
A chamber listing, a supplier's dealer page, a local news story, a sponsorship page. The brand mentions page explains why these may matter more than links.
- 6
Keep it current, honestly
Given ChatGPT's measured lean toward newer pages, update service pages when something real changes: a new price, a new area, a new certification. Changing a date without changing the page fools nobody.
Products, checkout and the new sponsored line
Retailers get a second set of doors. When shopping results rolled out in April 2025, OpenAI said product results were chosen independently and were not ads. In September 2025 Stripe and OpenAI launched Instant Checkout for US Etsy sellers, built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open standard the two companies co-developed. Then, according to March 2026 press reports, OpenAI said that first checkout was not flexible enough and that merchants can use their own checkout while it concentrates on product discovery.
Feeds are by application. OpenAI's commerce documentation says product feed onboarding is open only to approved partners, and a feed must carry titles, descriptions, images, price and availability, with a full upload recommended daily. Ads arrived too: OpenAI began testing them in the US on February 9, 2026 for Free and Go users, labeled sponsored and placed below the answer. OpenAI states ads do not influence what ChatGPT answers. Store owners should read the ecommerce GEO page for the wider picture.
What a store controls
- Product pages with full specs, prices and stock status in the HTML
- Accurate Product structured data that matches the visible page
- An application to OpenAI's product feed program, if accepted
- Reviews and comparisons on sites that rank in Bing
- A return policy and shipping terms stated plainly
What it does not
- Which products appear in an organic shopping answer
- Whether a sponsored unit appears below a given answer
- How OpenAI weighs one merchant against another
- The pace at which checkout features change
- Answers given from training memory
When ChatGPT gets your business wrong
There is no form for editing a ChatGPT answer. Corrections happen upstream. If the wrong answer came with citations, open them: the error almost always lives on one of those pages, often an old directory listing or a stale page of your own. Fix or remove the source, then ask again after the next crawl. If the answer came with no sources, it came from training memory, and the remedy is slower: make the correct fact loud and consistent across the web and wait for newer models.
- Old phone number or hours: start with wrong business information and the listings it names.
- Invented services, awards or prices: see when AI makes up facts.
- Last year's prices or a closed location: AI cites old information walks through the cleanup.
- A rival named every time: ChatGPT recommends a competitor compares the two records side by side.
ChatGPT rarely invents a wrong phone number. It usually finds one you forgot you published.
Finding ChatGPT visits in GA4
OpenAI's publisher FAQ says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links from search results. Seer Interactive reports the tag appears mainly on citation links, and that untagged visits still show as source chatgpt.com, medium referral. Since May 13, 2026, GA4 also has a built-in AI Assistant channel that catches recognized assistants, ChatGPT among them, and in June 2026 GA4 added a Source Group dimension that rolls ChatGPT's messy source values into one line. Our GA4 AI traffic guide has the setup.
Expect small numbers. The mobile and desktop apps often send no referrer at all, so those visits land in Direct. Cloudflare estimated in July 2025 that earning a visit from OpenAI took 750 times more crawling than Google search once did. A ChatGPT recommendation tends to produce a phone call or a branded Google search, not a tracked click. Ask callers where they heard of you, and watch branded search in Search Console.
ChatGPT beside Copilot and Google's AI answers
| ChatGPT | Microsoft Copilot | Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | |

The overlap is the good news: work on Bing helps ChatGPT and Copilot at once, and the content work carries over to Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Claude. The GEO hub maps all of them.
At DataCram, GEO is part of our monthly SEO programs: no long contract, programs from $625 a month, with most local businesses between $625 and $2,250 per the SEO pricing page. We set the tier after a free GEO audit that runs your customers' questions through ChatGPT and the other engines. The GEO pricing page explains what moves the number.
Questions owners ask us about AI search
Not in the answer itself. OpenAI began testing ads in the US in February 2026, shown to Free and Go users, labeled sponsored and placed below the answer, and OpenAI states ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers. The organic recommendation comes from what ChatGPT finds on the web. You improve your odds by improving that evidence, which is what a GEO program does.
No. GPTBot only collects content that may be used for training. OAI-SearchBot is the agent that surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, and blocking it is what removes you from search answers. Many sites block GPTBot and allow OAI-SearchBot. Check your robots.txt and any firewall rule labeled 'AI bots' to make sure you have not blocked both by accident.
OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers plus content from partners, without naming them. Independent tests point to Bing: a February 2025 Seer Interactive test found 87% or more of ChatGPT citations matched Bing's top organic results. That is why we treat Bing Webmaster Tools and Bing Places as part of any ChatGPT plan.
The model generates each answer fresh, the search results it reads can change, and signed-in answers can be shaped by saved memories and past chats. That is why a single test means little. Ask each question three times in fresh chats, log who is named, and compare month to month. AI share of voice explains how to turn those logs into a number.
It depends which ChatGPT answered. Robots.txt changes reach OpenAI's search systems in about 24 hours, by OpenAI's account. Page and listing fixes show up once the pages are recrawled and reindexed, usually weeks. Facts held in training memory change only when a newer model ships, which can take months. Nobody can promise a date for any of these.
Possibly, but do not count on it. In BrightLocal's November 2024 study of local searches, Yelp, Facebook and Google Maps did not appear among the directories ChatGPT cited. It leaned on business websites and third-party mentions instead. Keep earning Google reviews for Google's own AI answers and for the people who check, and make sure your site states what those reviews praise.
