Engine guide: Microsoft Copilot
How to Show Up in Microsoft Copilot: Bing Is the Front Door, and It Keeps Score
Most owners have never logged in to Bing Webmaster Tools. That is a shame, because Microsoft does something few AI companies do: it hands site owners a free report counting how often Copilot cited their pages. The road into Copilot runs through Bing, and Bing has been waiting for you to show up.

The short answer
To show up in Microsoft Copilot, get your site fully indexed in Bing, since Microsoft says Copilot is powered by Bing's search index. Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit a sitemap, report changes with IndexNow, claim Bing Places for Business, then use the AI Performance report to see which pages Copilot cites.

Copilot's answers start in the Bing index
Microsoft is unusually direct about this. Its advertising blog says experiences like Microsoft Copilot are powered by Bing's search index, and its support pages say Copilot grounds answers in current, publicly available web information, with citations users can check. If Bing has not indexed a page, Copilot has nothing of yours to cite from it. If Bing indexed an old version, Copilot cites the old version.
The bonus is that Bing work pays twice. In a February 2025 test of about 500 citations, Seer Interactive found that 87% or more of ChatGPT search citations matched Bing's top organic results, compared with 56% for Google. That is one study and OpenAI does not confirm its providers, so treat it as a strong hint rather than a rule. Still, the owner who fixes Bing is likely improving their odds in ChatGPT at the same time.
Bing is the search engine everyone forgets, and the one two AI assistants seem to remember.
This page covers the Copilot people use on the web, in Windows and in the mobile apps. Microsoft 365 Copilot at work also reads company files and email, which no website can influence. For how Copilot fits among the other engines, start at our generative engine optimization hub.
Four setup jobs that take an afternoon
Nothing here needs a developer if your site is in decent shape. It needs an hour with Bing Webmaster Tools, an hour with Bing Places and someone who remembers the passwords.
- 1
Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools
Bing can import a site already verified in Google Search Console, sitemaps included, which skips the manual verification step. Use that if Search Console is set up.
- 2
Submit and check the sitemap
Make sure the sitemap lists every service and location page and nothing that redirects or returns an error. Then spot-check in Bing Webmaster Tools that your most important pages are indexed. Our XML sitemap fix covers the usual faults.
- 3
Turn on IndexNow
IndexNow lets a site tell search engines a URL was added, updated or deleted, by hosting a key file and sending the changed URLs. Submissions are shared with the other participating engines. Microsoft recommends it as a way to improve the chance that current content is what Copilot cites.
- 4
Claim Bing Places for Business
The listing now lives at bing.com/forbusiness. More on it below, because for local businesses it may matter as much as the website.
Reading the AI Performance report without fooling yourself
Bing Webmaster Tools opened the AI Performance report in public preview on February 10, 2026. It counts how often your site is cited in Microsoft Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and some partner integrations. Microsoft calls it an early step toward GEO tooling. It is also one of the few direct readouts any engine gives owners about citations, so learn its columns.
| What it measures | How to use it | |
|---|---|---|
| Total citations | How many times your content was shown as a source in AI answers | Watch the trend month to month, not the daily wobble |
| Average cited pages | Average number of unique pages from your site shown as sources per day | A rising number means more of the site is useful, not just one star page |
| Grounding queries | Phrases the AI used to retrieve your content | Read these as the questions your pages actually answer; compare with the ones you want |
| Page-level citations | Citation counts by URL | Find the pages Copilot trusts, then link from them to the pages it ignores |
| Intents (added June 16, 2026) | Groups queries as Informational, Commercial, Local and similar | A local business with zero Local citations has a listing or location-page problem |
| Citation Share (June 2026) | Your percentage of all citations shown for the same grounding query | The nearest thing to share of voice Bing offers; it does not reveal competitors' data |
| Topics and Compare (June 2026) | Topic groupings and period-over-period comparison | Check that a content push moved the topic it targeted |
What the report does not show is clicks. A citation is an appearance, not a visit, and Copilot users often get what they need without leaving the chat. Pair this report with GA4, below, and with direct testing. Our page on AI share of voice explains how to read percentages built on small, shifting samples.
Bing Places is the listing your competitors forgot
On October 3, 2025 Bing launched a rebuilt Bing Places for Business and moved it from bingplaces.com to bing.com/forbusiness. The new version imports listings from Google, suggests improvements based on listing health and business type, and comes with Bing's stated plan for deeper integration with Bing Maps and Copilot. In its AI Performance announcement, Microsoft points local businesses to Bing Places for accurate business information.
- Import from Google, then check every field. An import copies mistakes as faithfully as facts. Compare hours, categories, phone and website against your Google Business Profile.
- Act on the suggestions. Bing's listing-health prompts are free advice from the system that feeds Copilot. Take them.
- Match your name, address and phone everywhere. Bing Places, Google, Apple Business, Yelp and your site footer should read identically. Our entity optimization guide explains why engines hedge when they disagree.
- Keep holiday and seasonal hours current. A listing that is right in March and wrong at Thanksgiving teaches customers to call someone else.
- Watch the Local intent in the AI Performance report. It is the one place you can see whether Copilot's local answers ever cite you.
Picture a typical owner: a Google profile tended every month, a Bing listing nobody has opened since it was claimed, if it was claimed at all. Where competitors look like that, the gap is an opening. A map pack audit checks the Google side; we check Bing in the same pass during a GEO audit.
Microsoft's own advice, and where it parts ways with Google
Microsoft has published more specific guidance than most AI companies. In October 2025 it said Copilot breaks content into smaller pieces, a process it calls parsing, and assembles answers from them. It recommended clear headings, a consistent title, H1 and description, and JSON-LD schema markup so its systems can tell a product from a review from an event. It also warned that AI systems may not render hidden content such as tabs and expandable menus. Its February 2026 advice added subject depth, evidence, current content and IndexNow.
What Microsoft asks for
- Clear headings, tables and FAQ sections that a parser can split cleanly
- Title, H1 and meta description that describe the same thing
- JSON-LD schema for products, reviews, FAQs and events
- Key facts in visible text, not inside tabs or accordions
- Examples and data that support claims, kept current and pushed with IndexNow
What Bing's guidelines rule out
- Prompt injection: hidden instructions written for AI systems
- Other AI manipulation, which Bing's guidelines added as abuse in February 2026, according to industry press
- Any expectation of guaranteed citations: the same guidelines say GEO does not guarantee them
Here Microsoft and Google differ, and owners should know it. Google says there is no special schema for its AI features and no need to chunk content for them. Microsoft explicitly recommends schema and clear sectioning for Copilot. The two do not conflict in practice: well-structured pages with honest structured data serve both. Where we go further than Google's guidance for Copilot's sake, that is Microsoft's advice, not a Google rule.
One technical point in Bing's favor: Bingbot renders pages with an evergreen version of Microsoft Edge, so it runs JavaScript, unlike several AI-only crawlers. The hidden-content warning still applies, and other engines are less forgiving, which is why our JavaScript and AI crawlers guide still argues for server-rendered text.
Copilot Checkout and the Merchant Center feed
Microsoft launched Copilot Checkout on January 8, 2026 on Copilot.com in the US, with PayPal, Shopify and Stripe. Merchants remain merchant of record. Shopify merchants are enrolled automatically and can opt out, which means some store owners are already in Copilot shopping without having decided to be.
Microsoft says product feeds in Microsoft Merchant Center inform organic Copilot shopping results, that Copilot supports the Universal Commerce Protocol (the open standard Google launched in January 2026), and that it takes no commission on Copilot Checkout sales. For a retailer, the to-do list is short: check whether your Shopify store is enrolled, submit or repair the Merchant Center feed, and make sure prices and availability in the feed match the product pages. The ecommerce GEO guide and our notes for Shopify stores compare this with ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
Copilot, ChatGPT and Gemini on the points that matter
| Microsoft Copilot | ChatGPT | Gemini app | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Web data | Bing's search index, which Microsoft confirms | Third-party search providers plus partners; testing points to Bing | Google-crawled pages, plus Google Search for double-check |
| Crawler | Bingbot, which renders JavaScript | OAI-SearchBot, which did not run JavaScript in 2024 testing | Google's crawlers; Google-Extended token for grounding |
| Local listing that feeds it | Bing Places for Business | No single listing; business sites led a 2024 BrightLocal study | Google Business Profile through Maps |
| Owner report | Bing AI Performance report: citations, grounding queries, Citation Share | No citation report documented by OpenAI | Search Console's AI report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode, not the Gemini app |
| Limit AI use without leaving search | NOCACHE or NOARCHIVE meta tags | Block OAI-SearchBot (removes you from ChatGPT search) | Disallow Google-Extended |
| Shopping | Copilot Checkout; Microsoft Merchant Center feeds | Product results; feeds for approved partners | UCP checkout and Universal Cart; Google Merchant Center |
The pattern: Copilot is the most measurable of the three and the most dependent on a search engine owners neglect. The Gemini guide and Perplexity guide cover their engines in the same depth.
When Copilot has it wrong, and how its visits show up
Microsoft itself advises Copilot users to review the sources before acting on an answer. When Copilot misstates your hours, prices or services, the fix is upstream.
- 1
Find the cited source
Open the citations on the wrong answer. Is it your page, your Bing Places listing or a third-party directory?
- 2
Correct it at the source
Edit Bing Places, update the page, or ask the directory to fix its listing. Our guide to wrong business information in AI answers lists the usual culprits.
- 3
Push the change with IndexNow
Submit the corrected URL so Bing recrawls it sooner instead of waiting its turn.
- 4
Report the answer
Microsoft's Copilot privacy FAQ says you can use the flag icon below a response on the web and in the mobile app, choose Give feedback in Settings, or long-press a response in the app and select Report.
- 5
Retest and keep the date
Ask the same question again after Bing has recrawled the page, and log the answer next to the old one.
For analytics, GA4's AI Assistant channel, live since May 13, 2026, names Copilot among its sources. If you built a custom AI channel earlier, include copilot.microsoft.com in the referrer rule; the full regex is in our GA4 AI traffic guide. App visits without a referrer still land in Direct, and the AI Performance report counts citations but not clicks, so no single number tells the whole story.
DataCram's GEO programs include Bing: Webmaster Tools and IndexNow setup, Bing Places cleanup alongside Google and Apple, monthly testing of your customers' questions in Copilot and the other engines, and a report built from the answers and the AI Performance data. Programs start at $625 a month, and most local businesses land between $625 and $2,250, with no long contract; see GEO pricing. Not sure where you stand? Questions owners ask us about AI search
No. Microsoft says Copilot is powered by Bing's search index, so your visibility in Copilot depends on how Bing crawls and indexes your site. A page that ranks well in Google but was never indexed by Bing is invisible to Copilot. Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools and check its index coverage first. Our guide on ranking in Google but not in AI covers the gap.
A report in Bing Webmaster Tools, in public preview since February 10, 2026, that counts how often your site is cited in Microsoft Copilot, Bing's AI summaries and some partner integrations. It shows total citations, cited pages, grounding queries and, since June 2026, intents, topics and Citation Share. It does not show clicks.
Yes, and it takes little of it. The rebuilt Bing Places at bing.com/forbusiness can import your Google listing, and Microsoft points local businesses to it for accurate information in its Copilot guidance. Check each imported field for errors, then keep hours current. If local competitors have not bothered, it is cheap ground to take.
Bingbot renders pages with an up-to-date Microsoft Edge engine, so it handles JavaScript better than several AI-only crawlers. But Microsoft warns that AI systems may not render hidden content like tabs and expandable menus, so keep key facts in visible text. Other engines that do not run scripts are a further reason to server-render your pages.
Find the source Copilot cited, correct it there (Bing Places, your page or a directory), submit the corrected URL with IndexNow, then report the answer with the flag icon or Give feedback. Retest after Bing recrawls. The report alone does not change what Copilot reads; the corrected source does.
Possibly. A February 2025 Seer Interactive test found 87% or more of ChatGPT search citations matched Bing's top organic results. OpenAI does not confirm Bing as its provider, so treat that as a likely overlap rather than a promise. Good Bing indexing is cheap insurance either way. See how to get mentioned by ChatGPT.
