Third-party sources
Reddit, Forums and Directories as AI Sources: What the Engines Read About You
Somewhere there is a three-year-old thread in which a stranger's brother-in-law swears by your competitor. Nobody at that company wrote it. That is exactly why an AI engine trusts it more than your About page, and why the fix is not to write a reply under a fake name.

The short answer
AI engines lean on third-party pages: Reddit threads, forums, review sites and directories. Google and OpenAI both struck Reddit data deals in 2024, and a March 2026 Peec AI analysis ranked Reddit the most-cited domain in AI answers. For local searches, business websites and directories carry more weight. Earn genuine mentions; faked ones break platform rules and federal rules.

Why a stranger's thread outranks your About page
An AI engine answering a buying question has a credibility problem. Every business says it is honest, prompt and fairly priced. So the engine goes looking for people who have no reason to say so. Google states it plainly in its guidance for site owners: its generative AI features can show what is being said about products and services across the web, including blogs, videos and forums. A forum post is evidence from outside the building. Your homepage is testimony from inside it.
The second reason is mechanical. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out, issuing several related searches across subtopics to build one response. A question like 'best foundation repair company in Boerne' quietly becomes a handful of searches: reviews, complaints, prices, warranties. Discussion pages answer those side questions well, so they get pulled into the pile the engine reads before it writes.
None of this means your own site stops mattering. It means your site is one witness among several, and the engine is listening for agreement. When the forums, the directories and your pages tell the same story, the story gets repeated. When they disagree, the engine picks a side, and it is not always yours. That logic sits at the center of how AI chooses businesses, and of generative engine optimization as a whole.
The data deals that wired Reddit into the answers
Reddit is not just popular with AI engines by accident. Two of the largest AI companies pay for structured access to it, and several engines license other third-party data outright. Here is what is on the record, with how sure we are of each item.
| Who | What it covers | How it is documented | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reddit and Google (February 22, 2024) | Access to Reddit's Data API for real-time, structured content Google can display and train on | Google's own announcement | |
| Reddit and OpenAI (May 16, 2024) | OpenAI | Reddit Data API access to bring Reddit content into ChatGPT | Press reports of the announcement; OpenAI's site blocks automated reading |
| Yelp data in Perplexity (since March 2024) | Perplexity | Yelp maps, reviews and photos in local business answers | Press reports |
| Tripadvisor in Perplexity (since January 2025) | Perplexity | Ratings, perks, images and summaries in hotel results | Press reports |
| Wikimedia Enterprise (January 15, 2026) | Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI, Perplexity, with Google an existing partner | Paid API access to Wikipedia, Wikidata and other Wikimedia projects | Wikimedia Enterprise's own announcement |
Read the table as a map of where engines expect to find independent opinion. A deal does not promise that any particular thread appears in any particular answer. It does tell you that the engines treat these sources as worth paying for, which is a stronger signal than any agency slide about them. For the engine-by-engine detail, see the pages on ChatGPT and Perplexity.
Citation share studies, read with the fine print
Three studies get quoted on this subject, often by people who read only the headline. They look like they disagree. They mostly measured different questions.
- Peec AI, March 2026. An analysis of 30 million citations ranked Reddit the most-cited domain across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews, followed by YouTube, LinkedIn and Wikipedia. Yelp made the top ten. Results varied by industry, and Peec AI sells an AI visibility tool, so read it as a vendor study.
- Pew Research Center, March 2025. Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit together made up 15% of the sources in Google's AI summaries and 17% of sources in standard results. In Pew's sample, the AI summary did not lean on those three sites more than the ordinary results page did.
- BrightLocal, November 2024. Across 800 local business searches in ChatGPT, 58% of sources were business websites, 27% were third-party mentions and 15% were directories. No Reddit or Quora sources appeared at all, and Yelp, Facebook and Google Maps were absent from the directory sources. Wikipedia made up 39% of the business-mention sources.
The practical reading: if you sell nationally, or your category gets argued about online (software, supplements, mattresses, financial products), forums are a primary source. If you fix roofs in one county, your entity record and your directory listings will usually matter more than any thread. Your own AI share of voice numbers, measured on your own questions, settle the argument for your business.
Directories: the dull pages that settle local answers
Directories have none of Reddit's glamour and much of its influence. They hold the structured facts an engine needs to name a business with confidence: name, address, phone, hours, category, ratings. Several engines take those facts straight from a listing service rather than from your website.
Google Maps and Business Profile
Gemini uses public Google Maps information, including ratings, reviews and hours, to answer questions about places. Google's own checklist for AI features tells owners to keep Business Profile current.
Yelp
Perplexity has licensed Yelp data for local answers since March 2024, according to press reports, and Yelp was reported in July 2024 to be the most common review source behind Apple Maps place cards in the US.
Apple Business
Apple Business replaced Apple Business Connect on April 14, 2026. It controls place cards across Apple Maps, Safari and Spotlight, and Apple says it helps businesses reach customers on Siri.
Bing Places
Microsoft Copilot runs on Bing's index. Bing Places moved to bing.com/forbusiness in October 2025, with plans for deeper Copilot integration.
Industry directories
Licensing boards, trade associations and specialist directories carry weight in their own fields. Each industry page lists the ones that matter for that trade.
The failure here is rarely absence. It is inconsistency: an old suite number on one site, a former phone line on another, a category that says 'general contractor' when you only do kitchens. Engines that cannot reconcile the records hedge or skip you. Cleaning that up is slow, unglamorous work, which is why AI gets business information wrong so often.
Why astroturfing a thread backfires
The tempting shortcut is obvious. Make a few accounts, start a thread asking for a plumber, answer it with your own name, upvote the answer. Some agencies sell this as 'community seeding.' It is a bad trade on every axis, and some of those axes carry fines.
What the shortcut runs into
- Moderators and regulars read account histories. A new account that only praises one company is spotted fast, and the thread becomes a public record of the stunt.
- Reddit's site-wide rules prohibit spam and vote manipulation, and most communities post their own limits on self-promotion.
- The FTC's rule on reviews and testimonials, in force since October 21, 2024, bans fake reviews, undisclosed reviews by insiders and fake social media indicators, with civil penalties for knowing violations.
- The FTC's Endorsement Guides say employees who mention their company's products should disclose the relationship, and that a line on a profile page is not enough.
What the engines say about it
- Google says seeking inauthentic mentions across the web is not as helpful as it might seem, because its ranking systems focus on quality and other systems block spam.
- Google clarified in May 2026 that its spam policies also apply to generative AI responses in Search.
- Bing's Webmaster Guidelines, updated in February 2026 according to trade press, name AI manipulation and prompt injection as abuse.
- Wikipedia strongly discourages conflict-of-interest editing and requires paid editing to be disclosed.
A planted thread is a mention that comes with a confession attached.
There is also the plain business risk. A fake thread that gets exposed is itself a forum post about your company, and it is exactly the kind of independent commentary an engine is built to find. You would be manufacturing the bad review an AI will quote.
How to earn forum mentions without faking one
The honest version is slower and it compounds. The goal is not to plant your name. It is to make sure that when real people talk about your category, they have accurate things to say, and that your own presence, where you have one, is labeled.
- 1
Find the conversations that already exist
Search Google for your service and town with 'reddit' or 'forum' added, and run your customers' real questions through the free AI visibility check to see which third-party pages the engines cite.
- 2
Read the room before you post
Read each community's rules and a month of posts. Many ban business accounts or allow promotion only in set threads. If they do, respect it.
- 3
Participate as yourself, with disclosure
If you answer a question in your field, say who you are and where you work. Answer the question even when the answer is a competitor or a do-it-yourself fix.
- 4
Fix complaints in public
When a thread describes a real problem with your business, reply once, calmly, and offer to make it right. Readers, and engines, see the reply.
- 5
Ask every customer for a review
Under the FTC rule you may ask all customers, but you cannot require positive reviews. Google Maps is stricter: no incentives and no asking only happy customers. Real reviews feed AI recommendations.
- 6
Give journalists and writers something to cite
Publish clear facts, prices and original data on your site so that people who write about your field can link to you. That is how brand mentions are earned.
Tracking which outside pages speak for you
You cannot manage third-party sources you cannot see. The first job is a list: for each question a customer asks, which pages does each engine cite, and what do they say about you? That list changes month to month, so it needs repeating, not a single screenshot.
DataCram does this as part of its AI search optimization programs. We track answers and cited sources with AICiteBeam, our own monitoring platform, clean up listings so the directories agree, run review generation and replies, and work to earn mentions in the places the engines actually read. Programs start at $625 a month with no long contract, and the tier is set after a free GEO audit. If you only want the watching, AI visibility monitoring covers it.
Questions owners ask us about AI search
Only as a real participant, under your own name, where the community allows it. Posting to plant mentions breaks Reddit's rules and can break FTC rules on undisclosed insider endorsements. For most local businesses, accurate listings and real reviews do more. The best local study on record, BrightLocal's November 2024 test, found no Reddit sources in ChatGPT's local answers.
A March 2026 Peec AI analysis of 30 million citations ranked it first across five engines, followed by YouTube, LinkedIn and Wikipedia. Peec AI sells a tracking tool, results varied by industry, and local queries behave differently. Treat it as a strong signal for broad questions, not a rule for every business. See how AI chooses businesses.
Start with Google Business Profile, which feeds Gemini and Google's AI features, then Apple Business, Bing Places and Yelp, which Perplexity licenses according to press reports. After that, the directories and licensing lookups specific to your trade. The industry pages list them by field.
Usually not, unless it breaks Reddit's rules or the law. The better move is a calm, signed reply that offers to fix the problem, plus a steady flow of fresh, genuine reviews elsewhere. If an AI engine is repeating the complaint as fact, see when AI quotes a bad review.
Paying for undisclosed mentions is the problem the FTC rule and the Endorsement Guides target, and Google says inauthentic mentions are not as helpful as they seem. Paying for disclosed sponsorships, real advertising or genuine PR is a different matter. Disclosure is the line.
Ask the engines your customers' questions and look at the citations, or use our free AI visibility check to see who gets named. For a running record of cited sources by engine, see prompt tracking.
