GEO Consulting: A Generative Engine Optimization Consultant for Teams That Do the Work

Somewhere this quarter, someone senior asked your marketing lead what the company is doing about ChatGPT. The honest answer was a shrug and a webinar. GEO consulting replaces the shrug with a written plan your own people can carry out, built on what the engines have actually published.

The short answer

GEO consulting is advice and planning for teams that will do the work themselves. A generative engine optimization consultant tests how AI engines answer your customers' questions, finds why you are missing or misdescribed, and hands over a written plan, a tracked prompt set, a ranked fix list and a measurement setup, with training so your team can run it.

Who hires a GEO consultant instead of an agency

A managed program suits an owner who wants the work done and a report at the end of the month. Consulting suits people who already have hands and want a map. They have a marketer, a developer, sometimes a whole content team, and what they lack is a clear view of how ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI features decide whom to name, plus an honest list of what to do first.

  • In-house marketing teams whose leadership wants an AI search plan, and who would rather own it than outsource it.
  • Agencies whose clients have started asking about ChatGPT, and who want a second opinion before they sell anything with the letters GEO in it.
  • Development teams rebuilding a site who want to know what AI crawlers need from the HTML before launch, not after.
  • Multi-location businesses with listings scattered across dozens of profiles and no single version of the truth.
  • Owners who like to do it themselves and want a short, ordered plan instead of forty open browser tabs.

What these buyers have in common is a healthy suspicion of the GEO gold rush, and they are right to have it. The field is full of agencies that discovered the acronym last Tuesday and dashboards that chart a number nobody can define. Consulting should leave you knowing more and depending on us less. If you are still at the "what is this" stage, our plain-English explainer on generative engine optimization is a better first stop.

The five places we look before giving advice

Advice is cheap when it is generic. Ours starts with your answers, your site and your listings, checked against what each engine says about its own sources.

The answers

Your customers' questions run through ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude, several times each. We record who is named, what is said and which sources are cited. You can see the method in miniature with the free AI visibility check.

The crawl

Your robots.txt read token by token, from OAI-SearchBot to Claude-SearchBot, and your key pages tested with View Source to confirm the text is in the HTML. The reasons are in AI crawlers and JavaScript and AI crawlers.

The entity

Your name, address, phone and description compared across your site, Google Business Profile, Apple Business, Bing Places and the directories in your trade. The theory is in entity optimization.

Reviews and mentions

Where you are reviewed, how recently, whether complaints get replies, and which articles, lists and forums mention you or your rivals. See brand mentions vs backlinks.

The measurement

What GA4, Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools can already tell you about AI traffic and citations, and what they are currently set up to miss.

Four deliverables your team keeps

The test of a consulting engagement is what is left on your drive when we leave. Every engagement produces these four documents, sized to the scope you buy.

GEO consulting deliverables and how a team uses each
What is in itWho uses it
The written planFindings, causes ranked by likely effect and effort, and the order to work in, with the reasoning behind each stepLeadership for approval; the marketing lead for scheduling
The prompt setThe questions to track, grouped by service, place, problem and brand, with the engines and competitors to watchWhoever runs tracking, in a tool or by hand
The fix listEach technical, listing, review and content fix written as a task with a clear done stateDevelopers, content writers and whoever owns the listings
The measurement setupAn AI channel in GA4, Search Console's Generative AI report, Bing's AI Performance report, and a baseline to compare againstAnalysts and the monthly reporting meeting

Training is part of the handover. We walk your team through the plan, the reasoning and the traps, and show how to read an AI answer for its sources. The GA4 piece follows our public guide to tracking AI traffic in GA4, so your analyst can check our work line by line.

What the engines say, and where our practice goes further

Good consulting separates rules from opinions. The left column is what the companies behind the engines have published. The right column is DataCram practice: advice we give because of evidence or experience, labeled as ours and not passed off as anyone's rule.

Published by the engines

  • Google said in May 2026 that optimizing for its AI features is still SEO, with no special schema or extra requirements beyond normal Search eligibility
  • Google says Search does not use llms.txt, and it stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026
  • Microsoft recommends clear headings, consistent titles and JSON-LD schema to help its AI systems understand content
  • OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot governs appearance in ChatGPT search, while GPTBot governs model training

Our practice, and why

  • Server-render the words that matter, because Vercel's December 2024 analysis found most major AI crawlers did not run JavaScript
  • Keep structured data accurate and matched to the visible text: Microsoft recommends it, and it keeps pages eligible for Google's rich results, even though Google says it is no AI shortcut
  • Earn mentions in the places engines already cite, while remembering that studies by Ahrefs and Seer show correlation, not proof of cause
  • Track a fixed question set over months, because single answers vary too much to judge a fix

This is the same line we draw across the site, from GEO vs SEO to the cold water we pour on llms.txt and AI-specific schema. A consultant who cannot tell you which of their recommendations is a published rule is selling confidence, not expertise.

How a consulting engagement runs

  1. 1

    Free GEO audit

We run a first set of your questions through the engines and look at the site and listings. The free GEO audit tells both of us whether consulting is the right shape for the problem.

  2. 2

    Scope in writing

We agree what is in and what is out: which sites, which locations, which engines, how many questions, how much training. You get a written quote before any work starts.

  3. 3

    Research

The answers, the crawl, the listings, the reviews and the measurement, examined as described above. If something urgent turns up, like a robots.txt line hiding the site from ChatGPT search, you hear about it right away.

  4. 4

    The plan and the walkthrough

We deliver the four documents and walk your team through them, in a working session rather than a slide show.

  5. 5

    Handover and check-in

Your team runs the plan. Where the scope includes a follow-up review, we rerun the prompt set after the fixes have had time to show and tell you what moved, what did not, and why.

Consulting or managed: an honest sorting

We sell both, so we have no reason to push one. The question is who will do the work every month, because GEO is mostly patient housekeeping: listings, reviews, pages and mentions, kept consistent over time.

  • Choose consulting if you have people with time to execute, a developer who can change the site, and someone who will keep the tracking going after we leave.
  • Choose consulting if you need a defensible plan for leadership, or a second opinion on an agency's proposal before you sign it.
  • Choose a managed program if the honest answer to "who will do this" is "me, on Sunday nights." Our AI visibility monitoring and AI and GEO search optimization programs do the work and report on it.
  • Choose a managed program if the site itself is the problem and needs rebuilding, which is development work rather than advice.

How consulting is quoted

We do not publish an hourly rate, because hours are the wrong unit. A single-location firm with one site needs a different engagement from a regional brand with forty listings and a headless storefront. So consulting is quoted after the free audit, with a defined scope written down before work begins, and the price depends on the sites, locations, engines and training involved.

If you later want us to do the work as well, GEO runs inside our monthly SEO programs. Those start at $625 a month, and most local businesses land between $625 and $2,250, with no long contract and the tier set after the audit. Details are on the SEO pricing page and GEO pricing, and financing for SEO work is available.

When we will tell you not to hire us

Consulting is the wrong purchase more often than consultants admit. We will say so if Google cannot index your site yet, because no AI plan survives that; start with fixing indexing and the basics of SEO. We will say so if you want a guaranteed mention, because nobody can sell one honestly. We will say so if there is no one on your side to carry out the plan, because a plan nobody runs is an expensive PDF. And if what you need is a legal or compliance opinion on what you can publish, that belongs with your counsel, not a web studio.

If none of that applies, the cheapest first step is free: run a question through the AI visibility check, read our guide on how to get your business mentioned by ChatGPT, and browse the wider generative engine optimization section. If the answers bother you, book the audit and bring your hardest questions.

Questions owners ask us about AI search

A GEO consultant studies how AI engines answer the questions your customers ask, works out why you are named, missing or misdescribed, and turns that into a plan your team can carry out. In our engagements that means four deliverables: a written plan, a prompt set to track, a fix list and a measurement setup, plus a walkthrough so your people understand the reasoning.

Much of it overlaps, and Google says optimizing for its AI features is still SEO. The differences are in the details: AI search crawlers with their own robots.txt tokens, engines that lean on Bing or on Google Maps data, answers that name a few businesses instead of listing ten links, and measurement that needs repeated questions rather than rank tracking. See GEO vs SEO.

Yes. Agencies bring us in for a plan they can deliver to a client, a prompt set and measurement setup, training for their team, or a second opinion on a GEO proposal. We scope each engagement after the free audit, and the deliverables are written so your team can run them without us in the room.

Yes, and it is one of the most useful things we do. We check its claims against what Google, Microsoft, OpenAI and the other engine makers have published, flag guarantees nobody can keep, and tell you which parts are sound. Common red flags include llms.txt sold as a ranking factor and a single AI score with no method behind it.

It is quoted after the free GEO audit, with the scope written down first, because the work depends on how many sites, locations and engines are involved. If you want us to do the work as a monthly program instead, programs start at $625 a month and most local businesses land between $625 and $2,250, per our SEO pricing page.

Not necessarily. A small prompt set can be tracked by hand in a spreadsheet, and the free reports in GA4, Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools cover part of the picture. Larger sets justify a tool, and the GEO tools comparison lists published prices as of October 2026. We built our own platform, AICiteBeam, for the programs we run.
