Divi 5, judged fairly
Divi Review (2026): Divi 5 Is a Better Builder. Is It the Right One for You?
Divi used to be easy to sum up: a fast way to design, a slow way to load, and a shortcode habit you could never quit. Divi 5 broke that summary. Elegant Themes rebuilt the builder from the ground up, so an honest review has to start over too.

The short answer
Divi is worth buying in 2026 if you design visually and build several sites: every plan covers unlimited websites, and Divi Lifetime costs $249 once (as of October 2026). Divi 5 is a real rebuild, with Flexbox, CSS Grid and design variables. Skip it if you depend on third-party modules or need a site that outlives one vendor's builder.

The short verdict, then the evidence
Divi 5 is the best Divi that Elegant Themes has shipped, and it is still Divi. That sentence is the whole review in miniature. The rebuild answers complaints designers made for a decade: layouts now use Flexbox and CSS Grid, styles can be set once as variables, and pages are no longer stored as walls of shortcodes. What has not changed is the bargain underneath. You design inside one vendor's builder, and your design stays in that vendor's format.
Elegant Themes makes Divi and sells it from its own site, with no marketplace in the middle. Divi first shipped in 2013, the builder is part of the theme rather than a separate plugin, and the vendor's site claims 974,872 customers. Ownership is easy to describe: the same company writes the code, takes the payment and answers the ticket. The paid extras (Divi AI, Divi Cloud, Divi VIP and Divi Teams) are services sold on top, not more plugins to keep in step.
The company is shipping at a pace that suggests it means it. The Divi 5 changelog reached version 5.14.0 on September 28, 2026, and the older line still received 4.27.9 ten days before that. Maintaining two generations at once costs a vendor real effort. For a buyer, it means the old Divi is not being cut loose while the new one settles in. Every other theme in our WordPress theme reviews is judged against the same questions you will find below.
The rebuild changed how Divi stores a page. It did not change who owns the format.
Divi scorecard: eight questions, eight plain answers
No stars and no invented points. Each row is a verdict in words with the reason beside it, so you can argue with the reasoning instead of a number. Everything here was checked against the vendor's own pages on October 6, 2026.
| Our verdict | The reason | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed approach | Good switches, honest limits | Dynamic CSS, Critical CSS and deferred jQuery ship switched on; heavy layouts and old modules undo them |
| Ease of setup | Easy to install, slower to master | Nothing extra to install, but the builder rewards practice and punishes guessing |
| Design flexibility | Excellent, and better in Divi 5 | Flexbox, CSS Grid, design variables and seven breakpoints without hand-written CSS |
| WooCommerce | Strong on design, ordinary underneath | 24 store modules and Theme Builder templates; the engine is still WooCommerce |
| Builder fit | Divi or nothing | It is its own builder; no vendor word on Elementor, and block-editor ties are still a direction |
| License value | Hard to beat | Unlimited sites on every plan, and $249 once for lifetime updates (as of October 2026) |
| Support and ownership | Stable and direct | One company builds, sells and supports it, with a 30-day refund |
| Long-term risk | Moderate, mostly lock-in | The design lives in Divi's format; leaving means a rebuild, and add-on makers must keep pace |
Two rows carry most of the weight. License value is why agencies stay with Divi for years. Long-term risk is why some single-site owners eventually leave. If you build twenty client sites a year, the first argument wins. If you run one site that has to earn for a decade, read the last row twice, then read the Divi vs Next.js comparison before you renew anything.
What Divi 5 changes for the person holding the mouse
Release notes list features. A buyer needs to know what each one changes on an ordinary afternoon with a client waiting for a revision. Here is the Divi 5 toolset translated into work saved, based on the vendor's release notes and changelog as of October 2026.
Flexbox and CSS Grid
Rows no longer force rigid column structures. Content can wrap, align and reorder the way modern CSS allows, and a CSS Grid editor arrived during 2026. Layouts that used to need a custom snippet are now settings.
Design variables and presets
Brand colors, fonts and sizes become variables, and option-group presets reuse a set of styles across modules. Change the brand blue once and every button that uses it follows along.
Seven breakpoints
Divi 5 offers seven customizable breakpoints, where Divi 4 gave you desktop, tablet and phone. Tablets held sideways and very wide monitors finally get rules of their own.
Loop builder and Loop Filter
Dynamic lists of posts, projects or products, with filter modules added in 2026. Work that once meant installing a listing plugin now happens inside the builder.
Complete Site Editing
Since version 5.1, the header, footer, body layout and page content open in one view. You see the menu and the hero together, the way a visitor does.
Workspaces and Divi AI Agents
Both appear in the vendor's 2026 release posts, the agents on September 4. Divi AI is a Pro service, so price it in before planning around it. We have not tested the agents and make no claims about them.
The quiet change matters most. Divi 5 drops shortcodes and saves content in a block-based WordPress format, which makes the data far easier for other software to read. Elegant Themes speaks of 'possibilities for Gutenberg cross-compatibility'. Treat that as a direction of travel, not a feature you can use today. A Divi 5 page still needs Divi installed to look like itself.
A new buyer and a Divi 4 owner are buying different things
Starting fresh? Build on Divi 5, and check which update path your install is on before laying out a single page, because we could not confirm from the vendor whether new installs default to it. Already on Divi 4? Nothing changes until someone clicks Enable Divi 5 Updates and runs the Divi 5 Migrator, and the launch post promised at least twelve months of Divi 4 support. Use that time to test on staging and check every add-on. Our Divi developers handle the upgrade when you would rather not.
Four plans, and the one most buyers should pick
Divi's price list is refreshingly short. Every plan covers unlimited websites, and the vendor offers a no-questions-asked refund within 30 days of purchase. As of October 2026 the yearly plan is $89, Lifetime is $249 once, Divi Pro is $277 a year, and Lifetime + Pro is $297 up front plus $212 a year. The full breakdown of what each includes and leaves out sits on our Divi pricing page.
- Using Divi for three years or more: buy Lifetime. Three years on the $89 plan comes to $267, already more than the one-time $249.
- Trying Divi on a first project: the yearly plan, tested hard inside the 30-day refund window, is the cheapest honest trial.
- A small studio sharing the work: Divi Pro adds Divi AI, Divi Cloud, Divi VIP and Divi Teams for four members. The vendor's page says that saves 69% against buying them separately.
- Lifetime + Pro: only if you are sure you want the Pro services for years. It is the lifetime theme with those services billed annually.
No plan covers the rest of the stack. Hosting, an SEO plugin, a caching layer, backups and any third-party module packs are separate purchases with their own renewal dates. On a typical Divi site the theme license ends up the smallest line in the budget. The costly line never appears on an invoice: the hours spent when two of those pieces disagree after an update.
Speed and search: good switches, and your layout decides the rest
Divi's speed tools sit under Divi Options, General, Performance, and the vendor's help center says most are on by default (Improve Google Fonts Loading has defaulted to off since Divi 4.14.9): Dynamic CSS builds a stylesheet per page from the modules it uses, Critical CSS loads above-the-fold styles first, Dynamic JavaScript loads libraries on demand, and jQuery moves to the footer unless a header script needs it. Dynamic Icons, Google Fonts caching, emoji removal and deferral of the block editor's stylesheet round it out. That help article was written for Divi 4, so confirm the tab on your own install after upgrading.
The vendor's numbers deserve their attribution. Elegant Themes' Divi 5 page shows a desktop score of 100 with a 0.3 second First Contentful Paint, and a mobile score of 100 with 0.9 seconds. Its help center says Dynamic CSS cut CSS size from 860kb to 54kb. Those are the vendor's measurements of the vendor's pages. Yours will depend on what you put on them, and our Divi speed guide shows how to measure honestly.
What slows real Divi sites is rarely the theme's defaults. It is the homepage with a slider, three nested rows and forty modules; the third-party module still running in backward-compatibility mode, which loads the Divi 4 framework on that page; and the minify plugin that fights Divi's own CSS handling. If pages have already slowed down, start with the Divi slow website fix before buying another plugin.
Search is simpler. Divi will not make or break your rankings; speed, content and clean structure will. Hand titles, sitemaps and schema to a dedicated SEO plugin, then check each finished page for one real H1, since designers sometimes pick heading tags for their size rather than their meaning. Our roundup of themes that help SEO explains which theme choices actually matter to search engines.
The store, the other builders and the add-on market
For WooCommerce, Divi brings design control rather than a new engine. The vendor lists 16 product modules plus 8 cart and checkout modules added in November 2021: Cart Products, Cart Totals, Cart Cross Sells, and Checkout Billing, Shipping, Information, Details and Payment. The Theme Builder makes templates for product and category pages. Products, payments and orders still run on WooCommerce. The details, and where the limits show, are on Divi with WooCommerce.
Builder fit is a short answer: Divi is the builder. We found no Elegant Themes statement on running the Divi theme with Elementor, and two visual builders on one site is a choice we would talk anyone out of. If you are choosing between the two, read Divi vs Elementor. If you want a builder that writes leaner markup for developers, Bricks vs Divi covers that trade. If you want a light theme and the block editor, Astra vs Divi is the fairer matchup.
Then there is the add-on market, which was a Divi 4 strength and is a Divi 5 risk. Modules from other vendors that have not been updated run in backward-compatibility mode. Elegant Themes' own help article says that mode loads the old framework, slowing those pages, needs an Ajax reload after each setting change, and shows raw shortcodes if the supplying plugin is switched off. Before you buy any module pack in 2026, ask its maker one question: is it Divi 5-ready today?
Headers, menus and the phone in your visitor's hand
Divi builds headers and footers as Theme Builder templates, assembled from ordinary modules, with the Menu module doing the navigation. Templates can be assigned to the whole site or to specific pages, posts and archives. Since Divi 5.1, Complete Site Editing lets you change the header in place while looking at the page beneath it, which removes a lot of back and forth between template and page.
Mobile is where Divi 5's seven breakpoints earn their keep. Set the menu, logo size and hero spacing per breakpoint, then test on a real phone rather than the builder preview, because touch, fonts and scripts behave differently on a device. When the hamburger icon refuses to open, the usual causes are covered in Divi mobile menu not working. Headers that jump as the page loads are a layout shift problem, explained in theme layout shift and CLS.
Where Divi sites break, and the page for each break
Divi's failures are well documented, mostly by Elegant Themes itself, and most of them sit at the seams between Divi and something else: a cache, a security plugin, a server limit. Here is the map from symptom to fix.
- The Visual Builder will not open. The vendor points to plugin conflicts, caches, PHP below 7.4 and low limits, recommending a memory_limit of 256M and max_input_vars of 6000. Walkthrough: Divi builder not loading.
- Edits do not save. Security plugins such as Wordfence, host firewalls, caching, Static CSS File Generation and minify plugins are the usual suspects, per the vendor's help center.
- Updates fail with an API key error. A licensing problem, not a code one: Divi update failed on the API key.
- Style changes do not appear. Usually a stale cache or static CSS file: Divi CSS not updating. Fonts that fall back to defaults have their own guide.
- An update scrambled the pages. Start at Divi layout broken after an update.
- Headers or footers vanished. Template assignments are the first check: Theme Builder templates not showing.
None of these mean Divi is badly made. They mean a Divi site is Divi plus a host plus five or six plugins, and the failures live where those pieces meet. The Divi repair hub collects every fix in one place, and our theme repair team takes the cases that resist a checklist.
Buy Divi if you design for a living; skip it if the site is the business
Divi is a good buy if
- You or your designer think visually and want to build on the canvas
- You run many sites and want one license, ideally Lifetime, to cover all of them
- Your add-on modules are Divi 5-ready, or you do not use any
- A small to mid-sized WooCommerce shop needs custom product and checkout layouts
- Clients will make small edits but rarely redesign
Look elsewhere if
- Leads from search pay the bills and every second of load time costs calls
- Your site leans on several third-party module packs of uncertain Divi 5 status
- You want content stored in a format no single vendor controls
- You need memberships, portals, calculators or heavy integrations
- Nobody on staff wants to learn a visual builder
Comparing builders first? Avada vs Divi weighs two all-in-one systems, and the three-way Divi vs Elementor vs Next.js adds the option of leaving builders behind. Every other matchup lives in theme comparisons.
If the right column describes you, the move is a content project, and Divi's storage format decides how much work it is. Our Divi to Next.js migration guide explains how the words come out of the builder and how every URL is kept. After the move, owners edit in Athena CMS: plain fields, a real preview, every version kept, with AI agents such as Argus watching for broken links and slow pages. Not sure which column you belong in? A free site audit looks at your Divi build and tells you whether to tune it, upgrade it or retire it.
Questions people ask before they call
Divi 5.0.0 left beta on February 26, 2026, and the vendor changelog had reached 5.14.0 by September 28, 2026, so it is a shipping product with frequent fixes. The risk is less Divi itself than your add-ons: modules not yet updated run in a slower compatibility mode. Test the full site on staging first, and read the Divi repair hub for known snags.
Most sites only need the regular plan. The $89 yearly and $249 lifetime plans (as of October 2026) include the theme, the builder, Divi Dash and support on unlimited sites. Divi Pro, at $277 a year, adds Divi AI, Divi Cloud, Divi VIP and Divi Teams. Buy it if a team will use those services weekly, not because the AI sounds useful someday.
We found no statement from Elegant Themes on it, and we would not recommend it. Divi's builder is part of the theme, so adding Elementor means two visual builders, two sets of styles and two update schedules on one site. Pick one. Our Divi vs Elementor comparison helps you choose.
No. Search engines do not penalize a theme by name. Rankings follow content, speed and clean structure, and Divi's default performance settings help with speed. Problems come from heavy layouts, old modules and heading tags chosen for looks. Pair Divi with a dedicated SEO plugin, keep pages lean, and check the Divi speed guide for the settings that matter.
For a designer-run brochure site, Divi is cheaper and faster to launch. For a business that lives on leads, local search and fast pages, a Next.js build usually earns more over time, and it removes the builder from the stack. The Divi vs Next.js page sets out the trade row by row, with a verdict by business type.
