Divi Developer for Divi 5 Upgrades, Custom Modules and Clean Exits

Quick question: is your site on Divi 4 or Divi 5? If you would have to check, you are in good company. The upgrade is opt-in, and nothing changes until someone clicks 'Enable Divi 5 Updates'. We help Divi owners decide whether to click it, do the work if they should, and plan the exit if Divi has run its course.

The short answer

Hire a Divi developer to move a Divi 4 site to Divi 5 safely, build Theme Builder templates and custom modules, or migrate off Divi. Divi 5, stable since February 26, 2026, drops shortcodes for a block-based format. Third-party modules that are not Divi 5-ready run in a slower backward-compatibility mode, so upgrades need testing first.

Divi 4 and Divi 5 are different machines

Elegant Themes did not polish Divi 4 into Divi 5. It rebuilt the builder from the ground up. Version 5.0.0 left beta on February 26, 2026, after a public beta that began in October 2025, and the vendor changelog shows 5.14.0 released on September 28, 2026. Divi 4 has not been abandoned: the 4.27.9 release arrived on September 18, 2026, and the launch post promised at least 12 months of Divi 4 support. So both are live, and a Divi developer in 2026 has to be fluent in both.

Before launch, Elegant Themes said 40% of its customers were already choosing Divi 5. The other 60% are why this page exists. Our Divi review covers the product as a whole; this page covers the work.

Backward-compatibility mode is a waiting room, not a home

Here is the part of the Divi 5 upgrade that catches owners out. When the Divi 5 Migrator converts a page and finds a third-party module that has not been rebuilt for Divi 5, it keeps the module working by loading the old Divi 4 framework on that page. Elegant Themes' own help article spells out the costs.

  • Pages with unsupported modules do not get Divi 5's performance improvements, because the Divi 4 framework loads alongside.
  • Editing those modules in the Visual Builder needs an Ajax reload after each setting change.
  • If the plugin that supplies the module is deactivated, the module shows a raw shortcode instead of content.
  • A notice in the WordPress admin bar flags pages with unsupported modules, and clicking it names them.

So a site full of marketplace modules can finish the upgrade and end up slower than before on its busiest pages. The fix is an inventory before the switch: every third-party module, which plugin supplies it, whether its maker has shipped Divi 5 support, and what we replace it with if not. When stray shortcodes are already showing, our guide to Divi shortcodes showing after a theme change explains what happened.

Our Divi 4 to Divi 5 upgrade, in order

  1. 1

Back up and copy to staging

Full files and database. The upgrade happens on a private copy, never first on the live site.

  2. 2

    Inventory modules and plugins

We list every module in use, page by page, and check each third-party supplier for Divi 5 support.

  3. 3

    Check the server

Elegant Themes recommends PHP 7.4 or later, memory_limit of 256M and max_input_vars of 6000. Builder failures often trace to these limits.

  4. 4

Enable Divi 5 updates and run the Migrator

On staging, we opt in and let the Divi 5 Migrator convert the content, then read the admin bar notices for unsupported modules.

  5. 5

    Replace or rebuild the stragglers

Unsupported modules are swapped for native Divi 5 modules or rebuilt as custom ones, so no page stays in compatibility mode.

  6. 6

    Compare every template

Old and new pages side by side on desktop, tablet and phone, Theme Builder headers and footers included, then key pages measured for speed.

  7. 7

    Go live and watch

The upgraded site replaces the old one, caches are cleared, and we check forms, checkout and search for the following weeks.

What we build inside Divi

Theme Builder templates

Headers, footers, post templates and archive layouts assigned by condition, so a new service page inherits the right design automatically. Templates that will not appear have their own guide: Divi Theme Builder templates not showing.

Custom Divi 5 modules

Divi 5 modules are built with Elegant Themes' JavaScript and React packages for the builder and PHP classes for rendering. We write modules for the jobs marketplace add-ons used to do, under your control.

A child theme

Custom PHP, templates and CSS in a child theme, so Divi updates replace Divi's files and not yours.

Design variables and presets

Brand colors, fonts and spacing set once as Divi 5 design variables and presets, so editors cannot drift from the brand one module at a time.

WooCommerce layouts

Product and category templates in the Theme Builder using Divi's 16 product modules and 8 cart and checkout modules. More in Divi and WooCommerce.

Speed settings that stick

Divi's Performance tab (Dynamic CSS, Critical CSS, Dynamic JavaScript, jQuery deferral) checked against your plugins, since caching and minify plugins can fight it. See the Divi speed guide.

The third option

Athena CMS, with AI agents on staff.

Not a theme and not a blank Next.js repo. The content system we put behind every custom site: plain fields, a real preview, every version kept, and AI agents that handle the chores a plugin only nags you about.

and 12 more agents. Two come with Athena; the rest are monthly add-ons.

Getting off Divi without losing a single URL

Divi's great strength, one builder for everything, is also its lock-in. On Divi 4, every page is a long string of shortcodes that only Divi can read. Switch themes and those pages turn into walls of bracketed code. Divi 5's block-based format is a step toward portability, and the vendor speaks of 'possibilities for Gutenberg cross-compatibility', but a Divi 5 layout still needs Divi to look like itself.

Leaving Divi is a content project, not a theme swap. We extract the words, images and structure from each page, map them to clean fields, rebuild the design in the new system and keep every URL, redirecting any that must change. The detailed version, including how shortcode content is parsed, is in moving from Divi to Next.js. If you are weighing it, Divi vs Next.js compares the two on cost, speed and editing, and Divi vs Elementor covers the sideways move.

On Divi 4 your content is written in a language only Divi speaks. Moving means translating it, not copying it.

Divi problems that turn into development jobs

Plenty of Divi calls start as a bug report. Elegant Themes' help center lists the usual causes when the Visual Builder will not load: plugin conflicts, caches, low PHP limits and PHP older than 7.4. When changes refuse to save, it points at security plugins such as Wordfence, host firewalls, caching, Static CSS File Generation and minify plugins. Those are fixes, and the Divi repair hub handles them, along with an update that fails on the API key.

They become development jobs when the cause is structural: a home page with hundreds of nested modules, a header rebuilt five times in five templates, or a stack of marketplace plugins doing what a single custom module could. Visible symptoms include Divi layout broken after an update and a Divi mobile menu that will not open. Fixing the symptom buys a month. Fixing the structure buys years.

How Divi projects are priced, and when we say no

Every Divi project gets a fixed quote after a free audit. The license is the easy part: as of October 2026 Divi costs $89 a year or $249 once for unlimited sites, and Divi Pro, which adds Divi AI, Divi Cloud, VIP support and Teams, is $277 a year. Elegant Themes offers 30-day refunds. Our Divi pricing page has the detail.

What moves our quote is the site itself: the number of pages and templates, how many third-party modules need replacing for Divi 5, WooCommerce depth, and whether old shortcode content is tangled up in plugins that no longer exist. Larger jobs can use financing for WordPress work.

And when we decline: if Divi 5 already runs your site well and you only need a new page, Divi's builder is designed for exactly that, and you should do it yourself. If you are a lead-driven business planning a redesign anyway, upgrading to Divi 5 first is paying twice; we will suggest going straight to a Next.js rebuild with Athena CMS for editing. Questions people ask before they call

Not yet. The upgrade is opt-in: you stay on the Divi 4 update path until someone chooses 'Enable Divi 5 Updates'. Divi 4 still receives releases (4.27.9 shipped on September 18, 2026), and Elegant Themes' launch post promised at least 12 months of Divi 4 support. Plan the move rather than rush it, especially if you rely on third-party modules.

Usually they will display, but not always well. Modules not yet updated for Divi 5 run in backward-compatibility mode, which loads the Divi 4 framework on that page, removes Divi 5's speed gains there, and needs an Ajax reload after each setting change in the builder. Check each module maker for Divi 5 support before you switch.

Yes. For Divi 5 we use Elegant Themes' module framework, which pairs JavaScript and React components for the Visual Builder with PHP for front-end rendering. A custom module often replaces a marketplace plugin that was never updated, which also removes one more license and one more update to track.

On Divi 4, pages are stored as Divi shortcodes, so switching themes leaves bracketed code where your layout was. The words and images are still there and can be extracted, but the design has to be rebuilt. We map content into the new system and redirect any URL that changes. See Divi to Next.js.

Elegant Themes says so, and its Divi 5 page shows perfect PageSpeed scores on its own test. Your results depend on your pages, your plugins, your hosting and whether any page is still in backward-compatibility mode. We measure your key pages before and after an upgrade so the answer is about your site, not a demo. Our Divi CSS troubleshooting guide covers one common snag.
