The7 fix

The7 Styles Missing After an Update or Migration? Rebuild Them

The7 does not keep your design in the theme folder. It compiles your Theme Options into stylesheets, saves them under wp-content/uploads and links every page to those files. After an update or a migration the files can be missing, stale or still pointing at the old address, and the site drops to bare defaults while your settings sit untouched in the database.

What you are seeing

  • The site loads in default fonts and colors with the layout roughly intact
  • The header loses its spacing or the logo changes size
  • The browser console shows 404 errors for files under uploads/the7-css
  • Theme Options still shows every setting exactly as you left it
  • The old site or the staging copy looks right and the moved one does not

Why it happens on The7

Most common first.

  1. 1

The generated files did not come along

A migration that copies the database and the theme but skips part of the uploads folder leaves the pages linking to stylesheets that do not exist on the new server. A cleanup or security tool that empties unfamiliar folders does the same thing without a move.

  2. 2

The uploads folder is not writable

After a theme update The7 needs to recompile its CSS. If file ownership changed during a move, or permissions were tightened, the theme cannot save the result. The update succeeds, the compile fails quietly and the old or absent files stay in place.

  3. 3

The stylesheets were compiled for the old address

Generated CSS contains full addresses for fonts, icons and background images. After a domain change or a switch to HTTPS those still point at the previous location. A search and replace on the database never touches them, because they are files and not database rows.

  4. 4

A cache is serving last month's CSS

New theme markup paired with an old cached or combined stylesheet looks broken in small, scattered ways. The compile worked. A caching plugin, a minified bundle or a CDN is still handing out the previous version.

  5. 5

The builder's own CSS is out of step

WPBakery keeps each page's design-option CSS with the page, and Elementor writes separate files into uploads. Either can go missing in a migration. The theme's styles look right and individual rows lose their padding and backgrounds.

How to fix it, in order

Least invasive first. Stop at the step that fixes it.

  1. 1

    Confirm the settings survived

Open Theme Options. If your colors, fonts and header settings are still there, nothing has been lost. Export them from the Export/Import Options screen before going further, and stay away from any button that restores defaults.

  2. 2

Save Theme Options to force a rebuild

Change nothing and press the save button in Theme Options. Saving makes The7 recompile its stylesheets and write them to uploads again, this time with the current site address. Reload the site in a private window. In many cases this is the whole fix.

  3. 3

    Make the uploads folder writable

If saving changed nothing, look under Tools, Site Health, Info, Filesystem Permissions and check that the uploads directory is writable. Ask the host to correct ownership on wp-content/uploads, including the theme's generated CSS folder inside it, then save Theme Options once more.

  4. 4

Purge every layer that stores CSS

Clear the caching plugin, delete any combined or minified CSS it built and purge the CDN. Our fix page on CSS changes not showing walks through the layers in order, so only the short version is given here.

  5. 5

    Regenerate the builder's styles

For Elementor pages, open Elementor, Tools and run its option to regenerate its CSS files. For WPBakery pages with missing padding or backgrounds, open the page and press Update, which writes that page's design CSS again.

  6. 6

Compare what is still wrong with the changelog

Anything left over is probably a real change in the new theme version, or a child theme template written for the old one. Read the release notes for the versions you skipped, then test with the child theme switched off on staging.

Keep it from coming back

  • After any migration, save Theme Options once on the new site before judging how it looks
  • Move the whole uploads folder, generated CSS included, and not only the media library
  • Run theme updates on a staging copy and compare the home page before and after
  • Keep a current export of Theme Options alongside your backups

The permanent fix

A faster Next.js build, with a CMS made for your business

One round of missing styles after a migration is routine and takes minutes to put right. If the design falls apart after most updates, the site is leaning on a chain: options in the database, a compiler in the theme, files in uploads and a cache in front, and any link can slip. In a Next.js build the styles are compiled once when the site is built and shipped with the pages, and content lives in a custom CMS, so the server has nothing to regenerate and an update has nothing to knock loose.

Frequently asked

Almost certainly not. The settings live in the database, and an update does not clear them. What went missing is the set of CSS files compiled from those settings. Rebuild the files and the design returns as it was.

Because saving is what triggers the compile. The7 reads the options, generates the stylesheets and writes them into uploads. If the save appears to work and the site stays bare, the theme could not write the files, and folder permissions are the next thing to check.

Three things change in a move: which files were copied, who owns them and what the site's address is. The generated stylesheets depend on all three. A site can move with its content complete and its design files absent or aimed at the old domain.

No. Restoring defaults replaces your saved design with the theme's factory settings, which turns a display problem into real loss. Export the options first, then save them unchanged. A reset belongs at the very end of the list, with a backup in hand.
