GEO for Plumbers: How Plumbing Companies Get Named in ChatGPT, Gemini and Siri

In August 2026 Yelp said its reviews and business details now show up inside ChatGPT and help power Apple Maps, Alexa+ and Bing. Somewhere a plumber who has not logged into Yelp since 2019 just became a source for four AI assistants, wrong hours and all.

The short answer

GEO for plumbers is the work of getting a plumbing company named correctly when people ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Copilot or Siri for a plumber. It means accurate emergency hours on every listing, a license number that matches the state plumbing board, reviews that describe real jobs, and pages that answer leak, water heater and sewer questions plainly.

On this page
  1. The plumber's Yelp page just got a second job
  2. Nine o'clock questions and nine-week questions
  3. Which assistant reads which record
  4. Open 24 hours is a claim an engine will repeat
  5. The M number, the 12-point line and other plumbing rules
  6. What to publish so a model can answer the slab leak question
  7. Reviews that name the leak, the street and the hour
  8. A plumbing company's first 30 days of GEO
  9. Working with DataCram on plumbing GEO, or working alone

The plumber's Yelp page just got a second job

For years a plumbing company could treat Yelp as a nuisance and live on Google alone. That arrangement is ending. Yelp says its content now surfaces in ChatGPT and feeds Apple Maps, Alexa+, Bing, DuckDuckGo and Yahoo, and that people can request quotes from service providers through those integrations. Press reports say Perplexity has licensed Yelp data for local answers since 2024, and that Apple Maps in the US draws its reviews mainly from Yelp. One neglected profile now leaks into several machines at once.

The rest of the record matters just as much. Google's AI answers read Business Profiles and the Search index. Copilot runs on Bing. Siri reads Apple's place cards. And according to a 2024 BrightLocal study, business websites were the largest single group of sources ChatGPT cited for local searches, at 58%. GEO for a plumber is less about any one engine than about making all of these records say the same true thing. The broad version of that argument lives on the GEO by industry hub; this page is the plumbing version.

Nine o'clock questions and nine-week questions

Plumbing questions split by urgency. Some are typed with water on the floor. Others are typed by someone planning a repipe over a couple of months. The engines treat them differently, and so should you. A sample of each, in the words customers use:

  • Emergency plumber near me open now
  • Who can shut off and fix a burst pipe in Helotes tonight?
  • How much does it cost to fix a slab leak?
  • Tankless vs tank water heater: which plumber should I call?
  • How do I check if a plumber is licensed in Texas?
  • Best-rated plumbers for sewer line replacement near me
  • Does a plumber charge extra to come out on a Sunday?

The emergency questions are answered mostly from listings: hours, distance, phone, rating. The project questions are where your own pages can be quoted, because a model asked about slab leak costs has to lift an explanation from somewhere. Test both kinds now with the free AI visibility check, which asks the engines through their APIs and shows who they name; API answers can differ slightly from the apps people use.

Four non-engine records round it out. The Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (the plumbing board, not TDLR) runs the license lookup consumers use. Local Services Ads now show a Google Verified badge after background, license and insurance checks; Google retired the Guaranteed badge and its money back promise. The BBB grade comes from complaint handling, licensing and advertising, not star ratings. Nextdoor Faves come only from verified neighbors. If your company name differs among these, start with the entity cleanup guide.

Open 24 hours is a claim an engine will repeat

For a plumber, the most quoted fact in any AI answer is the hours. An engine that says you are open all night when the after-hours line actually goes to voicemail has sent you an angry customer. An engine that says you close at 5 when you run trucks until midnight has sent your midnight jobs elsewhere. Hours drift because they live in six places, and someone updates two of them.

The water heater does not care what your Business Profile said last Christmas.

Two details are particular to this moment. Google's AI Mode can, when a business has little information online, have Google call it on a user's behalf to check prices, availability or appointments; you can turn those automated calls off under Advanced settings in the Business Profile, or publish the answers so the call is unnecessary. And holiday hours are where most listings go wrong, so set them before every holiday on Google, Apple and Bing at once. If an engine already has your hours or phone wrong, see wrong business information in AI answers, Siri showing the wrong hours and Google Assistant reading out the wrong number.

The M number, the 12-point line and other plumbing rules

Texas regulates plumbing advertising through the plumbing board's own rule, 22 TAC 367.10. The Responsible Master Plumber's license number, preceded by M, MPL or RMP, and the company name go on both sides of every service vehicle in contrasting letters at least 2 inches high. Advertisements soliciting plumbing work in any medium, business cards, flyers and coupons included, must state the RMP's number; the exceptions include national TV, franchisor internet ads and third-party aggregated listings. On the first page of proposals, invoices and contracts, in at least 12-point type, go the RMP's name and number, the phrase regulated by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners, and the Board's mailing address, phone and tsbpe.texas.gov.

Belongs on your pages and listings

  • The RMP license number with its M, MPL or RMP prefix, on the site and in ads
  • Google Verified, if you passed Local Services Ads screening
  • A review request sent to every customer, without conditions
  • The 3-day cancellation notice for in-home sales of $25 or more

Keep out of them

  • Google Guaranteed, which no longer exists
  • Discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews, which Google bans outright
  • Reviews from staff or relatives without disclosure, or reviews written by AI
  • Asking only the customers who seemed happy

One wrinkle bites plumbers in particular. The FTC Cooling-Off Rule exempts an emergency repair the customer asked for, but an extra item sold on that visit, such as a water heater replacement proposed while fixing the leak, is covered. Rules outside Texas differ by state. DataCram is not a law firm or a compliance consultant; we work within your rules, and you or your counsel approve every page before it publishes.

What to publish so a model can answer the slab leak question

Plumbing has unusually concrete questions, which makes it good material for GEO. A model asked how a slab leak gets found has to borrow an explanation, and the clearest local page is a fair candidate. The website build, with its emergency layout and published-fees page, is covered on our plumber website design page. What follows is what those pages should say.

  • Slab leaks: how you detect them, the repair approaches you use, what drives the cost, and how long the house is without water.
  • Water heaters: tank versus tankless in your water and your climate, the brands you install, what a replacement includes, and what happens to the old unit.
  • Sewer lines: camera inspection, what the footage shows the homeowner, and repair versus replacement.
  • Fees in plain numbers: the service call, the after-hours premium, and ranges you choose for common jobs.
  • License and insurance: the RMP's name and number, a line explaining how to check it on the board's lookup, and proof of insurance.
  • Where you work: the neighborhoods and towns you actually reach quickly, each with something true about its plumbing, such as older cast iron drains or slab foundations.

For markup, schema.org's Plumber type fits exactly, with name, address, phone, hours and areaServed matching your Business Profile and the visible page. Google says its AI features need no special schema and stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026, so treat markup as accurate labeling, not a shortcut. The guide to content AI can quote shows the before and after of a quotable paragraph.

Reviews that name the leak, the street and the hour

Plumbing reviews are often short and grateful, which is lovely and nearly useless to a machine. The reviews that help say what broke, when, and how it ended: a burst supply line on a Sunday night, a tech who found the slab leak without tearing up the whole floor, a sewer camera video shown on a phone in the driveway. You cannot write those reviews or ask for specific wording, but you can ask every single customer within a day, with a direct link, and reply to each review by restating the job. The details tend to follow. Our page on how reviews shape AI recommendations explains why the wording matters, and AI quoting a bad review covers the one-star story that will not die.

A plumbing company's first 30 days of GEO

  1. 1

Ask the machines what they think

Fifteen to twenty questions, emergency and project, each with a neighborhood or town. Save the answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode, Copilot and Perplexity as a dated baseline.

  2. 2

Look yourself up on the board's lookup

Copy the RMP's name and license number exactly as the plumbing board shows them. That spelling is the standard for everything else.

  3. 3

    Rescue the Yelp profile

Claim it if unclaimed, correct hours and phone, answer any open quote requests, and reply to recent reviews.

  4. 4

    Match Google, Apple and Bing

Same name, number, regular hours, after-hours policy and holiday hours on all three. Decide whether Google's automated calls stay on.

  5. 5

Publish the slab leak and water heater answers

Two pages written from your own jobs, with your license block and a date.

  6. 6

    Open the doors to crawlers

Check robots.txt against the tokens in the AI crawlers guide and confirm service text appears in the raw HTML, not only after scripts run.

  7. 7

    Ask the machines again

Rerun the baseline questions at day 30. Corrected listings usually register before new pages do, and answers vary between runs, so look for direction rather than a single result.

Working with DataCram on plumbing GEO, or working alone

Our GEO work sits inside monthly SEO programs: no long contract, a written scope, from $625 a month, with most local businesses between $625 and $2,250 a month per the SEO pricing page. A free GEO audit sets the tier, and GEO pricing explains what pushes it up or down. Each month we put your questions to the engines through AICiteBeam, fix listings and crawlability, run review requests and replies, write the pages above and report the answers themselves. On sites we build with Athena CMS, Hestia keeps holiday hours in step across listings and Delphi flags an engine quoting the wrong fee or phone. The ads, map pack and email side is on our plumbing marketing page.

A one-van plumber with a clean Google profile and a steady review habit can do most of this alone in an afternoon a month. Call us when you cover several towns, when an engine keeps sending people to a competitor, or when the listings have drifted past fixing by hand. Questions owners ask us about AI search

Give it consistent facts to find. ChatGPT search draws on web search results, partner data such as Yelp, and business websites. Keep Bing Places and Yelp as accurate as Google, let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site, and publish pages that answer real plumbing questions. Nobody can promise a mention, but these steps raise the odds. Check today's answers with the AI visibility check.

Texas rule 22 TAC 367.10 requires advertisements soliciting plumbing work, in any medium, to state the Responsible Master Plumber's license number, with exceptions such as third-party aggregated listings. We treat the company website as advertising and put the number on every page. Your counsel or the plumbing board has the final word on how it applies to you.

Usually because one listing says so. Engines draw hours from Google, Apple, Bing, Yelp and your site, and a single stale record can win. Fix the hours on every listing the same day, add holiday hours, and state your after-hours policy on the site. Then recheck the answers over the following weeks.

More than it was. Yelp says its reviews and business details now surface in ChatGPT and feed Apple Maps, Alexa+ and Bing, with quote requests through those integrations. Even if Yelp sends few direct calls, its record now travels. Claim the profile, keep it accurate and answer quote requests quickly.

It will not earn a rich result: Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026, and says no special markup is needed for its AI features. Write the questions and answers on the page for people, mark up the business with the Plumber type, and keep the markup matching the visible text.

Plumbing leans harder on emergency hours, Yelp and neighborhood-level answers, and its Texas license rules come from the plumbing board, not TDLR. HVAC has its own stale-fact problems with refrigerants and tax credits. Compare the HVAC version.
