Salient fix
Salient Update Failed or Broke the Layout? Fix It in Order
A Salient update is two updates. The theme arrives from ThemeForest, by the Envato Market plugin or by upload, and then the Salient plugins that shipped with it have to be updated to match. Most update trouble is the first half done and the second half forgotten.
What you are seeing
- No Salient update shows under Dashboard, Updates, though a newer release exists
- The upload ends with a message that the theme is missing style.css
- A notice lists Salient plugins that need updating and never goes away
- After the update, spacing, fonts or the header look different
- Elements in the builder lost options they had last week
Why it happens on Salient
Most common first.
- 1
Nothing is connected to deliver updates
Salient is sold on ThemeForest and is not in the WordPress.org theme directory, so the built-in updater does not learn about new releases by itself. They arrive through the Envato Market plugin, connected with a token from the buying account, or by hand. That account often belongs to a designer who has since moved on and taken the password along. A site with neither route will report that everything is up to date for years.
- 2
The wrong zip was uploaded
ThemeForest offers two downloads: the full package and the installable WordPress file. The full package wraps the theme zip together with documentation and a child theme. Upload that outer file and WordPress stops with a message that the theme is missing its style.css stylesheet.
- 3
The theme moved and the Salient plugins stayed
Each Salient release carries matching versions of Salient Core, Salient WPBakery Page Builder and the other companion plugins. Updating the theme does not update them. Until someone follows the notice, a new theme is running against old plugins, and that gap is where missing element options and shifted layouts come from.
- 4
Styles left over from the previous release
Salient generates part of its stylesheet from your settings in the options panel, and caching plugins, hosts and CDNs keep copies of the old files. After an update the markup is new and the styles are not, so the header, spacing or fonts look wrong on a site that is otherwise fine.
- 5
Code edited inside the Salient folder
An update replaces every file in the theme folder. Edits made there, and child theme templates copied from a much older release, are the usual reason a customized Salient site looks different afterward. The general guide to themes that break on update covers the recovery.
How to fix it, in order
Least invasive first. Stop at the step that fixes it.
- 1
Back up files and database first
Use your host's backup tool or a backup plugin and confirm the backup finished. Better, clone the site to staging and run the whole update there before repeating it on the live site.
- 2
Fetch the theme the supported way
Either install the Envato Market plugin, connect it with a token created under the account that bought Salient and update from its Themes tab. Or download the installable WordPress file from your ThemeForest Downloads page, go to Appearance, Themes, Add New Theme, Upload Theme and accept WordPress's offer to replace the installed copy.
- 3
Update the Salient plugins straight away
Once the theme is current, the dashboard lists the Salient plugins that need updating. Do Salient Core and Salient WPBakery Page Builder first, then Nectar Slider, Portfolio and the rest. Do not stop to judge the site halfway, because a half-updated stack is the broken state.
- 4
Clear caches and save the Salient options once
Empty the caching plugin, the host cache and any CDN. Then open the Salient options panel and click save without changing anything, which prompts the theme to rebuild the styles it generates from your settings.
- 5
Walk the pages that earn money
Open the home page, a service page and the contact form on a desktop and on a phone. Check the header, the slider and one page in the builder. Compare against screenshots taken before the update if you have them.
- 6
If something is still off, compare with the backup
Restore the backup to staging and set the two versions side by side. Read the changelog ThemeNectar publishes for the releases you skipped, which often names the setting that moved. Differences that trace to the child theme need its templates refreshed from the new parent.
Keep it from coming back
- Keep the ThemeForest purchase under an account the business controls
- Treat the theme and the Salient plugins as one update, never two
- Put custom code in the child theme that comes in the ThemeForest download
- Update every few months so no single jump spans years
The permanent fix
A faster Next.js build, with a CMS made for your business
When each Salient release costs an afternoon of checking pages, the expense is not the theme. It is the arrangement: a marketplace account, a theme, a builder edition and several plugins that all have to land on the same release. A Next.js site with a custom CMS has no theme to update and no plugin stack to keep in step, so a quiet month stays quiet.
| On Salient today | On Next.js with a custom CMS | |
|---|---|---|
| What you keep updated | WordPress, the theme, its builder and every bundled plugin, all in step | Nothing on a schedule. There is no theme or plugin stack to fall out of step |
| How a page is served | Built from the database on each visit, through the theme and its builder | Built ahead of time and served as finished files from servers near the visitor |
| How you edit it | A general-purpose builder with every option the theme ships | A CMS built around what your business actually changes: services, prices, photos, posts |
| What can break it | An update to any one of those parts, or a license that lapses | A change someone makes on purpose, tested before it goes live |
Your content, your addresses and your rankings come with you: every page is moved, every old address is redirected, and you get a login to an editor that only shows what you need. A repair is still the right call for many sites, and we will say so when it is.

Frequently asked
WordPress checks its own directory for theme updates, and Salient is not sold there. Without the Envato Market plugin connected to the purchase, the site has no way to hear about a new release. Compare the version under Appearance, Themes with the one listed on Salient's ThemeForest page.
The theme. The matching plugin versions are delivered with it, so the plugin updates only become available once the new theme is in place. Then update the plugins immediately, in one sitting.
Ask the designer for the current installable file, which gets you through this update. For the long run the business should hold the purchase under an account it controls, so updates do not depend on someone answering an email.
No. Pages, sliders and the settings in the Salient options panel are stored in the database, and an update only replaces theme files. What can be lost is code edited directly in the theme folder, which is the reason a child theme exists.
