Newspaper Theme fix

Newspaper Theme Won't Activate, or Purchase Code Already in Use?

Newspaper is activated with an Envato purchase code, and one license covers one website. Activation fails when the code is wrong, when it already activates a different site or when the request never reaches tagDiv. All three can be sorted out. The slow part is usually finding the code, which tends to live in the inbox of someone who left two redesigns ago.

What you are seeing

  • The Activate Theme screen rejects the purchase code
  • A message says the code is already in use on another site
  • You press the button and nothing comes back
  • The form asks for a support account and says your email is taken
  • A red dashboard notice keeps asking you to activate a theme you paid for

Why it happens on Newspaper Theme

Most common first.

  1. 1

The code already activates a different website

One license covers one end website. tagDiv allows the same code on development and staging copies of that site, but not on a second site with its own content. Codes passed along by an agency have often served more than one client, and the second activation is the one refused.

  2. 2

It is not the Newspaper purchase code

Envato issues a separate code for every item bought. A code for another theme or for a plugin purchased the same day looks identical and will not activate Newspaper. Neither will an invoice number or an order ID.

  3. 3

The support account step hits an existing email

First-time activation also sets up an account on tagDiv's support forum. If that email address or username is already registered there, perhaps by whoever built the site, the form stops and reports it as taken. The purchase code never gets its turn.

  4. 4

    The request never reaches tagDiv

Activation is a call from your server to tagDiv's. A host firewall that blocks outgoing connections, a security plugin that filters external requests or a cache serving a stale admin page can stop it. You press the button and the screen simply sits there.

  5. 5

The theme did not come from ThemeForest

Copies downloaded from anywhere else have no purchase code to give, and some carry code the author never wrote. If nobody can produce a ThemeForest receipt, treat the copy as unlicensed and its files as untrusted.

How to fix it, in order

Least invasive first. Stop at the step that fixes it.

  1. 1

Find the purchase code at its source

Log in to the ThemeForest account that bought Newspaper and open Downloads. Beside the theme, the Download button offers the license certificate and purchase code. The code is a long string of letters and digits in five groups. Copy it from the file instead of retyping it.

  2. 2

Enter it on the Activate Theme screen

In the dashboard go to Newspaper, Activate Theme. Paste the code with no spaces around it and give an email address the business controls. If the form says the email or username is taken, an account already exists on tagDiv's forum. Recover that account or use a different address, then finish the form.

  3. 3

If the code is in use, find out where

Ask whoever supplied the code which sites it has activated. Newspaper, System Status shows how this install is registered. If the other site is an old copy of yours, retire it. If it belongs to someone else, the code was never yours to use and you need your own. To move a code off a site that no longer exists, write to tagDiv support with the code and your domain and ask for a reset.

  4. 4

If nothing happens, clear the path

Deactivate caching and security plugins for a few minutes, clear the cache and submit again. If the request still goes nowhere, ask the host whether outgoing HTTPS connections from PHP are allowed for your account.

  5. 5

    Ask for manual activation

tagDiv provides a manual activation method for sites where the automatic request keeps failing. Their activation documentation points to it, and their support will walk you through it once you can show a valid code.

  6. 6

If no code can be found, license it yourself

When the original buyer cannot be reached, the clean answer is a new license under an Envato account the business owns. Record the code and that login in the same place as your domain and hosting details.

Keep it from coming back

  • Hold the license in an Envato account the business owns, not the builder's
  • Store the purchase code with the domain and hosting logins
  • Use an email address that outlives any one employee for the tagDiv account
  • Install the theme only from your own ThemeForest downloads

The permanent fix

A faster Next.js build, with a CMS made for your business

One lost purchase code is paperwork, not a reason to rebuild. It becomes a signal when it sits beside others: a theme years behind, plugins only the theme's panel can install and nobody left who knows how the site was assembled. A Next.js build with a custom CMS has no license server to answer to. You own the code outright, and the site keeps running whether or not anyone remembers a password from five years ago.

Frequently asked

Not on two separate websites. The license covers one end site, and tagDiv's own guidance allows the same code on development or staging copies of that site. A second publication with its own content needs its own license.

No. Envato sells support in fixed periods, and when one lapses you lose access to help from the author, not to the theme. The purchase code stays valid. If activation fails, look at where the code is already in use or at the connection between your server and tagDiv.

Published content keeps working. The dashboard shows a standing warning and the Cloud Library's templates stay out of reach. The larger cost is indirect: unactivated sites are usually the ones nobody maintains, and a theme left alone drifts out of step with WordPress and PHP until something breaks.

Expect to. A move often leaves the theme showing as unregistered, and entering the same code again normally settles it. If the code is refused because the old address still holds it, tagDiv support can reset the registration.
