Newspaper JavaScript Errors: Whose Script Broke, and How to Tell From the File Path

Which company wrote the script that just failed on your homepage? On a Newspaper site the honest answer could be tagDiv, an ad network, the makers of a bundled slider or page builder, or the optimizer that rewrote all of them. The browser console names the file. The file path names the suspect.

The short answer

Newspaper JavaScript errors usually come from an optimizer that delayed or combined tagDiv's scripts, an ad network's code placed in the theme's ad spots, a bundled WPBakery or Revolution Slider copy out of step with the theme, or another plugin's script colliding with tagDiv's. Open the console, read the first red error's file path, and test that source first.

Where Newspaper's JavaScript actually comes from

The ThemeForest listing says Newspaper's JavaScript files are combined and minified automatically. What it does not say is where they live, and that matters when you read an error. When we loaded tagDiv's public Newspaper Pro demo in October 2026, it ran 12.6.7, and almost none of its front-end scripts came from the theme folder.

  • WordPress core: jQuery and jQuery Migrate, which tagDiv's scripts still load alongside.
  • tagDiv Composer: tagdiv_theme.min.js plus a row of small files such as tdMenu.js, tdAjaxSearch.js, tdSmartSidebar.js and tdLoginMobile.js, all under the plugin's legacy Newspaper folder.
  • tagDiv Cloud Library: js_files_for_front.min.js, tdbMenu.js and tdbSearch.js, which drive template elements such as header menus and search.
  • The Mobile Theme: a separate tagdiv_theme.min.js under Composer's mobile folder, according to a 2021 staff answer.
  • An optimizer: the demo itself served most of these through WP Rocket's cache folder, with its delayed-script loading switched on.

Version 12.6 added another wrinkle. Its changelog says specific JS files are now loaded only when needed, so the set of scripts on an article can differ from the set on the homepage. That is good for speed and means an error can appear on one template only. Check the template where the fault happens, not just the homepage.

Read the path, then pick the suspect

Open the broken page in a private window, press F12, choose Console and reload. Read the first red error, not the last, because one uncaught error stops the rest of its own file, and if an optimizer merged many files into one, it stops all of them. Click the file name at the right of the error and match it against this table.

If the console shows a domain you do not recognize at all, take it seriously. Recent Newspaper releases, 12.7.7 to 12.7.9, mostly fixed cross-site scripting flaws, and an injected script is a symptom worth ruling out with our malware removal guide.

Four common sources, most likely first

Script delay, combining and Rocket Loader

Optimizers change the order and timing of scripts. A 2021 forum thread on WP Rocket's Delay JavaScript Execution ended with menus that worked only for logged-in users, even after owners excluded the tagDiv files a staff member listed. tagDiv staff have also told owners to switch off Cloudflare's Rocket Loader while testing. The fair note: tagDiv's own demo runs delayed scripts, so the feature can work. The test is to switch it off, purge every cache and see whether the error disappears.

Ad code in the theme's ad spots

Ad networks run their own scripts inside your pages, and Newspaper invites them in through Theme Panel > Ads and the Ad Box element in Composer. In an older thread, from the 8.x era in 2018, a staff member traced errors inside tagdiv_theme.min.js on mobile to an ad network's script loader placed in the theme's ad spots. In a 2020 thread, inline article ads failed with a Google error saying fluid responsive ads must be at least 250 pixels wide, and staff passed it to a developer. Both threads are old; the method still holds. Empty the spot and retest.

Bundled WPBakery and Revolution Slider

The changelog records tagDiv updating both: WPBakery to 9.0.1 in 12.7.8 and Revolution Slider to 7.2.0 in 12.7.9. A copy delivered with a theme typically updates when the theme vendor ships it, so a site that skips theme updates keeps old builder and slider code too. Whether every license includes both is not something tagDiv's pages confirm. If your error path names either, check which copy is active, and see WPBakery not working and updating a bundled WPBakery copy.

Another plugin touching the same elements

Lazy loaders, retina image plugins, lightboxes and second sliders all reach for the same images and links tagDiv's scripts handle. The same 2018 thread had a user tracing an error to a tagDiv image function that could not find an image source on mobile. Staff's standing advice is to test with only tagDiv plugins active, then add the rest back one at a time on staging. Our plugin conflict guide has the method.

Clearing the console on a Newspaper site

  1. 1

    Reproduce it logged out

Use a private window on the device where it fails. Many optimizers skip administrators, so your logged-in view may be clean while readers get the error.

  2. 2

    Capture the first error

Copy the first red error, its file path and line number, and the template it happened on: homepage, article, category or a page.

  3. 3

    Switch off script optimization

Disable JavaScript delay, defer and combine in your optimizer, turn off Rocket Loader, and purge the plugin, host and CDN caches. If the error is gone, you have found the layer.

  4. 4

    Match the versions

Check that the theme, tagDiv Composer and tagDiv Cloud Library are on matching current releases. If they are not, use the Newspaper update problems routine on staging.

  5. 5

    Empty suspect ad spots

On staging, remove the code from the ad spot or Ad Box on the failing template and retest. Put each ad back one at a time.

  6. 6

    Isolate other plugins

Deactivate everything except tagDiv's plugins on staging. If the error stops, reactivate plugins one by one until it returns.

  7. 7

    Restore speed carefully

Turn optimization back on one feature at a time. Exclude the files your console named from the feature that breaks them, and leave it off if exclusions do not help.

A routine that catches the next error first

  • Open the console on the homepage, an article and a category page after every update. Thirty seconds per template beats a reader's email.
  • Run one optimizer, and keep a written list of every script exclusion with the reason beside it.
  • Review ad code before it goes into a Theme Panel spot. New ad partners bring new scripts, and they run on every page.
  • Keep the theme current. Recent releases fixed security flaws and carry the newest bundled builder and slider copies.
  • Remove plugins that duplicate theme features, such as a second slider or lightbox.

Our hosting and maintenance plans run tested updates with backups taken first, and the general method for any theme is in WordPress theme JavaScript errors. Script trouble often shows up as a dead menu, covered in Newspaper mobile menu not working, and the Newspaper speed guide explains why ad scripts weigh on phones.

Six authors, one browser tab

A Newspaper article page can run code from WordPress, tagDiv Composer, tagDiv Cloud Library, an ad network or two, a bundled slider and a builder, then hand all of it to an optimizer that reorders it. Each author tests their own code. Nobody tests the whole set on your pages before your readers do, and every update from any of them reshuffles it.

Every script on a Newspaper page passed someone's tests. None of them passed yours.

A Next.js site bundles its JavaScript as one project, with pinned dependencies, and a broken script fails the build on a developer's machine instead of failing quietly on a reader's phone. Ad tags still come from outside, but they load where and when the code says. It costs more up front and needs a developer for structural change. Newspaper vs Next.js weighs that for publishers, and Newspaper to Next.js shows the move. To stay on Newspaper, our theme troubleshooting service traces the error to its file on a fixed quote, the Newspaper repair hub lists other known faults, and the troubleshooting section covers other themes.

Questions people ask before they call

Mostly tagDiv's plugins, not the theme folder. On tagDiv's demo in October 2026, tagdiv_theme.min.js and files such as tdMenu.js loaded from tagDiv Composer, and js_files_for_front.min.js and tdbMenu.js from tagDiv Cloud Library, alongside WordPress's jQuery. Since 12.6, some files load only where needed, so check the template where the error appears.

Yes. Ad code placed in Theme Panel > Ads or a Composer Ad Box runs inside your pages. Older forum threads include a staff member tracing errors in tagDiv's script to an ad network's loader, and inline ads failing with a Google width error. Empty the suspect ad spot on staging, retest, and add ads back one at a time.

The changelog says tagDiv updated WPBakery to 9.0.1 in version 12.7.8 and Revolution Slider to 7.2.0 in 12.7.9, which suggests both ride along with the theme. tagDiv's pages do not confirm every license includes them. If an error names either, check which copy is active and whether any page still uses it.

Many optimizers and caches serve administrators the original, unoptimized page. Readers get the delayed or combined version, which is where script order breaks. Always test in a private window, logged out, on the device that fails, and read the console there. If the error appears only for readers, the optimizer or cache is the first suspect, not tagDiv's code.

Use it as a test, not a permanent fix. If errors vanish with optimization off, turn features back on one at a time and exclude the files your console names from the one that breaks them. Our theme speed optimization service does this tuning when you would rather not.
