Keyword Gap Analysis
Your competitors rank for thousands of searches you do not. Most of that list is noise. A keyword gap analysis finds the few dozen gaps worth closing and decides what to build for each.
A gap report is not a to-do list. It is a pile of evidence.
Run any competitor through a keyword gap tool and it hands you thousands of searches they rank for and you do not. It feels like a treasure map. It is closer to a phone book. Most rows are irrelevant, some are out of reach, a few are traps, and buried in the middle are the thirty or forty searches that would actually change your month.
The comparison itself is mechanical. As of October 2026, Semrush's Keyword Gap tool sorts the overlap into buckets: Missing (every competitor you entered ranks and you do not), Weak (you rank, but below all of them) and Untapped (at least one competitor ranks and you do not). Ahrefs runs the same comparison in its Content Gap tool. Google Search Console cannot do it at all, because it only reports searches where your own site appeared. The list is also only as good as the domains you feed it, which is why the comparison set comes from your real search competitors, not the logo across the street.
Filtering is where the value lives. First, relevance: a gap counts only if you sell the thing. A competitor with a pool division will bury you in pool searches you have no business chasing. Second, intent: a search whose results are all how-to articles will not be won by a service page, and the reverse holds too (search intent settles which is which). Third, winnability: who ranks, how good those pages are, and whether your site has standing on the subject. Difficulty scores help with that first pass and nothing more.
The Weak bucket is the most underrated part of the report. Those are searches where you already have a page in the results, parked on page two while a competitor holds page one. A missing term needs a new page. A weak one usually needs the page you have to get better: answer the question sooner, cover what the competitor covers, and earn a few internal links from pages that already carry weight. Weak gaps close faster and cost less, so we start there.
Every surviving gap gets one of four verdicts: build a new page, strengthen an existing one, fold it into a page that already covers the topic, or let it go. The verdict and its target URL go into the keyword map, so a closed gap never becomes a second page fighting the first. Related gaps are grouped before anything is written, the way topic clusters are built, so the new pages arrive connected instead of stranded.
Gap analysis is one stage of keyword research, and it runs inside DataCram's monthly SEO programs. Programs start at $625 a month, and most local businesses land between $625 and $2,250, per our SEO pricing. There is no long contract. If you want a first look before talking to anyone, the free site audit shows what your pages are doing today.
What the analysis covers
From thousands of rows to a short list with verdicts
Rankings, side by side
Your ranking searches and your competitors' are lined up row by row. Each row shows who ranks, in what position, and with which page.
Relevance before anything
Searches for services you do not offer are cut on sight. A competitor's sideline is not your gap.
Weak split from missing
Terms where you sit on page two are separated from terms where you are absent. The first needs a better page, the second a new one.
Winnability, read by hand
We look at the pages holding each result and weigh them against your site, not against a generic score.
A verdict for every gap
Build, strengthen, merge or drop. Each gap that survives the filter leaves with a decision and a target URL.
Rerun on a schedule
Competitors keep publishing. Repeating the comparison catches new gaps while they are still small and cheap to close.
Which searches are your competitors winning without a fight?
Send us your site and two or three competitors. We will show you the gaps worth closing, and the much longer list worth ignoring.
Why the gaps matter
What a closed gap is worth, three ways
Proof the door opens
A gap is a search where a site like yours already ranks. That is better evidence than any volume estimate, because someone has already shown it can be won.
Answers you never wrote
An assistant can only cite a page that exists. The questions your competitors answer and you skip are questions where you cannot be the source.
First impressions you forfeit
Many gaps are questions customers ask before they call anyone. If a competitor answers and you do not, that buyer met your competitor first.
How a gap analysis runs
1. Set the comparison
We confirm which domains actually share your results before running anything. The wrong competitors produce a long, confident, useless list.
2. Pull the overlap
Rankings for every domain are exported and matched search by search. Branded terms, other cities and services you do not sell are stripped out first.
3. Filter and decide
Each remaining gap is checked for intent and winnability against the live results. It leaves with one verdict: build, strengthen, merge or drop.
4. Map and build
Verdicts go into the keyword map with a target URL, then into the publishing schedule. Weak gaps go first because they close fastest.

Questions
Frequently asked
A comparison of the searches your site ranks for against the searches your competitors rank for, sorted into terms they have and you lack and terms where you rank but trail. The comparison is the easy part. The output that matters is the short list of gaps worth closing, each with a decision attached. It is one stage of keyword research, not a replacement for it.
Mostly vocabulary. A keyword gap is a search a competitor ranks for and you do not; a content gap is the missing page or section behind it, and tools use the two terms loosely. We treat the keyword as the evidence and the content as the fix, usually written by our content marketing team.
A competitor analysis benchmarks the whole field: rankings, content, ads, reviews and offers. A gap analysis does one narrow job, comparing keyword sets and deciding what to do about the difference. Choosing which sites belong in that comparison is its own task, covered under competitor keyword analysis.
Usually the weak ones, where you already rank on page two and need a better page rather than a new one. Next come missing terms with clear buying intent whose results are held by thin or dated pages. Gaps owned by national brands with years of links can wait; low-competition keywords explains how to spot the openings.
Partly. Google Search Console shows the searches your own site appears for, which is half the comparison, and searching your main terms by hand shows who holds them. The full side-by-side needs a paid tool such as Semrush or Ahrefs. The free half still pays: queries in Search Console with an average position between 11 and 30 are weak gaps in all but name.
It can, if a new page targets a search an existing page already covers. Then the two compete and both tend to slip, which is keyword cannibalization. That is why every gap is checked against the keyword map before anything is written, and why the right move is often to expand the page you already have.
Yes, and those are often the best finds. A competitor's guides may rank for dozens of specific questions nobody on your side ever answered. Those are long-tail opportunities with proof already sitting in the results, and they tend to be cheaper to win than the short terms.
