Internal Linking & Site Authority

Authority arrives unevenly and pools where it landed. Internal links move it to the pages that actually sell — the cheapest ranking work there is.

Your home page has authority. Your money pages need it.

Authority arrives at a website unevenly. Links from other sites, mentions, citations, and years of accumulated trust land mostly on a few pages — the home page, one article that did unusually well, a press hit from 2019. Those pages are strong. The pages that actually sell something are usually not.

Internal links are how you move it. Every link from one page to another passes a share of that page's standing along with it. This is not a trick and not a loophole; it is the mechanism the whole system was built on, and it is one of the few ranking factors you control completely. Nobody has to agree to link to you. You are linking to yourself.

Most sites do this accidentally and badly. Authority pools in the home page and the blog index, then trickles into whatever the navigation happens to mention, while the service pages that pay the bills sit three clicks down with four links pointing at them — two of which say "click here."

Anchor text is the other half and the more neglected one. The words inside a link tell search engines what the destination is about. A site whose internal links say "learn more" has told them nothing. The same links reading "emergency water heater replacement" describe the page every time they appear, from every context, in your own words.

Done deliberately, this is the cheapest ranking work available. No new content, no outreach, no budget beyond the hours. We have watched pages move several positions from internal linking alone — because the page was always good enough, it was simply the least-supported page on its own website.

It also has a ceiling, and we will say so plainly. Internal linking redistributes the authority you have; it does not manufacture more. If nobody anywhere links to your site, there is little to move around, and the honest recommendation is to go earn some. But almost every established site is sitting on standing it never routes anywhere useful.

What the work is

Routing authority to the pages that earn

Map where authority sits

Which pages carry external links and rankings today, and which pages you need to rank. The gap between those two lists is the whole opportunity.

Link from strength to need

Your strongest pages point deliberately at your commercial pages. A single contextual link from a page that already ranks is worth more than a dozen from the footer.

Fix the anchor text

Links describe their destination in real words rather than 'click here' or 'learn more'. Varied, natural, and specific — repeating one exact phrase everywhere reads as manipulation.

Flatten what is buried

Anything important should be reachable in about three clicks from the home page. Depth is a signal, and pages that take five clicks to reach get treated accordingly.

Stop the leaks

Broken internal links, chained redirects, and links to pages that no longer exist waste authority in transit. Cheap to fix, invisible until someone checks.

Keep navigation honest

A mega menu linking to two hundred pages spreads authority so thin it stops meaning anything. Navigation should reflect priority, not inventory.

Three ways to read it

Why internal links are the work nobody does

SEO

Fully under your control

External links require someone else's decision. Internal links require only that you make one — which is why they are the most under-used lever in search.

AI

Context travels with the link

Descriptive internal links help AI systems understand what a page covers and how it relates to the rest of the site, which shapes what gets summarized and cited.

Buyers

A path to the next step

Good internal linking is good navigation. The visitor reading an answer finds the service that solves it, because you put it in front of them.

How we run it

1

1. Build the link graph

Every internal link on the site, plus which pages carry external authority and rankings today. The picture is usually lopsided in a way nobody expected.

2

2. Name the destinations

Which pages need to rank for the business to grow. Without that list, internal linking becomes tidying rather than strategy.

3

3. Place the links

Contextual links from strong pages to target pages, with anchor text that describes the destination. Placed in the body where they are read, not stacked in a footer.

4

4. Track movement, then repeat

Target pages get watched for position changes. Internal linking is iterative — each round shows which pages responded and which need something more than a link.

Questions

Frequently asked

Authority arrives at your site unevenly — mostly on the home page and one or two pages that happen to have earned links. Every internal link passes a share of a page's standing to the page it points at. Linking deliberately moves that standing from where it accumulated to the pages that need to rank.

No, and the difference matters. Link building is earning links from other websites, which requires someone else's decision. Internal linking is links within your own site, which requires only yours. It is the cheapest ranking work available and the most commonly skipped.

There is no magic number, and any consultant who gives you one is guessing. What matters is that links are contextual, descriptive, and genuinely useful to a reader. A page with six well-placed links in the body beats one with forty crammed into a footer.

It is the most neglected half of the job. The words inside a link describe the destination — 'emergency water heater replacement' tells a search engine what that page is; 'click here' tells it nothing. Vary the phrasing naturally, though: the same exact anchor everywhere reads as manipulation rather than description.

It can move pages meaningfully, and we have seen several positions from linking alone where the page was already good and simply unsupported. But it redistributes the authority you have rather than creating more. If nothing anywhere links to your site, the honest answer is that you need to earn some first.

They are two views of one problem. Pulling scattered pages into sections decides what the groups are; internal linking decides how authority moves through them. We usually do the structural work first, because linking a pile is harder than linking a library.
