Website Design for Business Lenders: Applications Owners Finish, Disclosures That Hold Up

How many owners quit your application at the screen that asks for three months of bank statements? Most lenders do not know, because the site was built to look established, not to be measured. A lending website is an intake desk. It should be designed, tested and counted like one.

The short answer

A business lender's website has to explain each product's cost and terms plainly, take an application an owner can finish on a phone, collect bank statements and tax returns through secure upload, carry the state disclosures and registration details that apply, and pass clean data to your loan system. DataCram builds custom lender sites at a fixed price from $3,500.

Six things a lending site has to get done without a loan officer

Owners visit a lender's site with a specific errand and very little patience. The design job is to make each errand short and obvious, in the order a borrower actually needs them.

Qualify or disqualify, quickly

Minimum time in business, revenue and the industries you fund, stated up front so poor fits leave before they apply.

Start an application

A first step that asks for five things, not fifty, and lets the owner come back later without starting over.

Collect the documents

Bank statements, tax returns and financials uploaded securely from a phone or laptop, never sent as email attachments.

Explain the cost

How pricing works for each product, in words that match the disclosures your counsel approved.

Prove who you are

Legal entity, registrations and licenses, SBA participation and a real phone number answered by a person.

Serve partners and borrowers

A referral path for accountants and dealers, and a place for existing borrowers to request a payoff letter or a renewal.

Where business loan applications die, and the design that keeps them alive

Applications rarely fail on the first screen. They fail at the document request, at an unexpected credit pull consent, or when a phone session times out halfway through a bank statement upload. These are the decisions we build in:

  • A short first step. Name, business, amount, use of funds and contact details. The underwriting questions come after the owner has committed.
  • Save and resume. A secure link by email or text returns the owner to the exact step they left, so a missing tax return does not cost you the application.
  • Upload by phone camera or file. Owners keep statements on their phones; the upload accepts PDFs and photos, checks file types and shows progress.
  • Plain consent language. Credit pulls, contact permissions and e-signature consent are written in the words your counsel approves and shown before the action, not buried in a footer.
  • Notice of action taken. Regulation B (12 CFR 1002.9) covers business credit too, with notification procedures that differ for businesses with gross revenues of $1 million or less; the flow can carry the statements your compliance team specifies.
  • A clean hand-off. Data passes to your loan origination system or CRM through its API where one exists, so nobody retypes an application.

Every step is tracked, so you can see which screen loses owners and fix that screen, not the whole site. Conversion rate optimization on a lending flow is mostly about removing questions underwriting does not need yet.

Disclosures, registration numbers and a December 31 deadline

Business credit is outside most of Regulation Z (12 CFR 1026.3(a) exempts business-purpose credit), but state laws now reach the offer itself, and an offer delivered through your portal is part of your website. As of October 2026, these are the rules most likely to shape a lending site:

  • Texas Finance Code Chapter 398 (HB 700). For commercial sales-based financing offers under $1 million, the provider must disclose the total financing amount, disbursement amount, finance charge, total repayment amount, estimated repayment period, payment schedule, other fees, prepayment charges, collateral and broker compensation. If offers appear in your portal, that disclosure belongs in the same flow.
  • Texas registration. Providers and brokers must be registered with the OCCC by December 31, 2026, and the OCCC now takes registrations through NMLS. Your licensing page should show the registration once it is issued.
  • California and New York. California requires commercial financing disclosures on offers of $500,000 or less, and New York on offers up to $2.5 million, given when the offer is extended. A national lender's portal may need state-specific disclosure screens.
  • Chatbots. The CFPB warned in 2023 that chatbots in finance must follow federal consumer financial law and can give inaccurate answers. If your site adds one, it needs reviewed answers and a fast route to a person.

Secure upload that beats a bank statement sent by email

Many lenders still collect documents by email, which means bank statements and tax returns sit in inboxes, forwarded between staff, for years. A purpose-built upload is safer for the borrower and faster for underwriting. On the sites we build, files travel over TLS, are stored encrypted, are visible only to the roles that need them, and are deleted on the retention schedule you set. Upload links expire. Every view and download is logged.

The portal sits behind the server, not in public pages, and it is a separate concern from the marketing site that search engines read. Which data security rules apply to your company is a question for your compliance team; we build to the controls they require. Portals and application apps start at $3,500 on our web design pricing page, and ongoing hosting and maintenance keeps them patched.

Fast enough for an owner applying from a truck cab

Plenty of applications start on a phone in a parking lot with one bar of signal. We build lender sites on Next.js, so product pages are prerendered and arrive as finished HTML, images are sized for the screen, and the application loads only the code each step needs. Our site speed work targets Core Web Vitals, and we design forms to WCAG 2.2 AA so owners using screen readers or larger text can finish them too.

The same build helps you get found. Product facts sit in server-rendered text that AI crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot can read, and structured data uses schema.org's FinancialService and LoanOrCredit types. How engines choose which lenders to name is a separate discipline, covered on our GEO page for business lenders; the bringing-in of owners lives on business lender marketing.

Athena CMS for product changes that cannot wait for a developer

Every custom site we build includes Athena CMS. Your team edits product ranges, eligibility rules and pages, with drafts held for compliance approval before they publish. Its agents draft; people approve:

  • Delphi asks ChatGPT, Google's AI answers and the others what they say about your products and flags wrong terms or timelines.
  • Iris writes titles, descriptions, social cards and structured data for each product page.
  • Prometheus finds borrower questions your site does not answer yet and drafts the page.
  • Hestia keeps the address, phone and hours identical on the site and every listing.
  • Argus watches the site and the application flow, and reports when something breaks.

Price, financing and when a template is honestly enough

A lender site starts at a fixed $3,500, because the application flow and document upload put it in our portal tier, and the final number comes after the free mockup or a free site audit. Website financing is 0% with 25% down: up to 12 months on any project, 24 months from $15,000 and 36 months from $20,000. A $9,000 site, for example, is $2,250 down and $562.50 a month for twelve months.

A template is probably enough if

  • You are a solo broker who sends applications to other lenders' portals
  • You offer one product and take applications by phone
  • Your loan software vendor provides a compliant hosted application you are happy with

A custom build pays for itself when

  • You fund several products and need a page and flow for each
  • Applications stall at document collection
  • You lend in several states with different disclosure screens
  • Partners and brokers send a meaningful share of deals

Questions owners ask before a new website

Custom lender sites start at a fixed $3,500, because the application and secure document upload count as a portal. We quote one fixed price after the free mockup or audit, and 0% financing with 25% down is available for up to 12 months on any project.

Usually, yes. Where your loan system or CRM offers an API, the application passes data and documents straight into it, so nobody rekeys anything. Where it does not, we agree a secure export with your team. We scope the integration before quoting.

A purpose-built one is far safer than email. Files travel over TLS, are stored encrypted, are visible only to the roles that need them, and are deleted on your retention schedule, with every access logged. Your compliance team sets the controls; we build to them.

If you provide or broker commercial sales-based financing in Texas and deliver offers under $1 million through your site or portal, the required disclosures belong in that flow. Banks and credit unions are exempt. Registration with the OCCC is due by December 31, 2026. Your counsel confirms what applies to you.

Yes, as long as your compliance team approves the assumptions and wording. We show the assumptions beside every result, keep the output to a clearly labeled estimate, and make sure it matches how your products actually price.

It should not. We map every existing URL, including partner and broker referral links with tracking codes, and redirect each one to its new page at launch. Partners keep sending owners, and their attribution keeps working.
