One suite, five reports
Ahrefs Review 2026: What It Does Best, Five Reports Worth Learning, and Cheaper Alternatives
Most people who buy Ahrefs use about a fifth of it. That is not a scandal; it is the right fifth, if you know which reports to open. This review skips the tour of every button and teaches the five that answer real questions about your site and your rivals.

The short answer
Ahrefs is a full SEO suite whose strength is backlink data: Ahrefs says its link index refreshes every 15 to 30 minutes. As of October 2026 it costs $29 a month for Starter and $129 for Lite, with a free tier for sites you verify. Learn five reports first: Overview, Organic keywords, Referring domains, Keywords Explorer and Site Audit.

The verdict: a link index with an SEO suite built around it
Ahrefs is best at one question: who links to whom. The company's published infrastructure page describes a backlink index updated every 15 to 30 minutes and 35 trillion records of external backlink history. The keyword research, the crawler and the rank tracker are good, and in places excellent. But the link data is the reason to pick Ahrefs over a cheaper tool, and a buyer who never studies links is paying for the wrong strength.
Where it earns the fee
- Backlink research on any competitor, filtered to followed links and sorted by the linking site's traffic
- Keyword metrics beyond volume, chiefly Traffic Potential and Parent Topic
- A site crawler that executes JavaScript, free for your own verified sites through Ahrefs Free
- Ranking history for rivals, six months deep on Lite and longer on higher tiers
Where it pinches
- Lite meters use with 1,000 credits per user each month
- Content Explorer and Batch Analysis begin at Standard, $249 a month
- No free trial is listed; the free tier is the test drive
- Traffic numbers for small local sites are estimates from a sampled set of keywords
This page is about using the tool once you have it. The plan-by-plan contest with its main rival lives in Ahrefs vs Semrush, and the SEO tools hub shows where a paid suite sits beside the free tools every site should run first.
What each Ahrefs plan adds, priced as of October 2026
Ahrefs' pricing page lists five paid tiers and a free one. The jumps between them are less about price than about which reports become available, so the table below lists what changes at each step rather than every limit.
| Plan | Monthly price | What this tier adds |
|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs Free | $0 | Site Audit, Site Explorer and Web Analytics for websites you verify; up to 1,000 backlinks or keywords visible at once |
| Starter | $29, monthly billing only | A small allowance for occasional lookups; limits are compared in Ahrefs vs Semrush |
| Lite | $129 | 5 projects, 750 tracked keywords, 6 months of history, 1,000 credits per user, Competitive Analysis; up to 2 extra users at $40 each |
| Standard | $249 | Content Explorer, Batch Analysis, 2 years of history, no per-user credit cap, 20 projects |
| Advanced | $449 | 5 years of history, 50 projects, a Looker Studio integration |
| Enterprise | $1,499 on an annual commitment | Unlimited history, single sign-on, uncapped API access |
Now the warning. The banner price buys one seat. Report Builder is a $99 monthly add-on, Brand Radar AI starts at $199 a month for AI answer tracking, and a Content Kit from $99 a month was marked as coming soon when we checked. Annual billing saves up to 17%. A team of three on Lite with one add-on is a $308 monthly bill before anyone has opened a report.
Report one: Site Explorer's Overview, read beside Search Console
Type a domain into Site Explorer and the Overview leads with Domain Rating, referring domains and estimated organic traffic. Ahrefs defines Domain Rating as the relative strength of a site's backlink profile on a logarithmic scale of 0 to 100. Its blog explains the math: only followed links count, only the first link from each domain counts, and a linking site's strength is split among every site it links out to. It is Ahrefs' number, not Google's, as our page on domain authority explains.
The traffic figure needs more care. Ahrefs says it estimates organic traffic from a site's top 100 rankings, using position, volume and expected click rates. Its own data page lists 140 million US keywords in that traffic index, against 2.7 billion in its US keyword database. A plumber whose customers type a neighborhood and a ZIP code can look nearly invisible in Ahrefs while the phone rings all day.
Report two: Organic keywords, a rival's customers in a spreadsheet
Organic keywords lists the searches in Ahrefs' database for which a domain, folder or single page ranks in the top 100, sorted by estimated traffic. Ahrefs' academy notes that it opens on the country where the target has the most rankings, which for a site with visitors abroad may not be the United States. Check the country dropdown before you trust a single row.
- 1
Enter the competitor and set the country
Paste the rival's domain into Site Explorer, open Organic keywords and choose the United States.
- 2
Strip out their brand
Add a Keyword filter set to doesn't contain, with the competitor's name. Searches for their name are customers you will not win.
- 3
Read the top fifty
Sort by traffic and mark every service you also sell. That list is your content gap, written by the market.
- 4
Find your own near misses
Run your site. Ahrefs' academy suggests keywords where you sit in positions 3 to 7 with real volume, where a small gain moves real traffic.
- 5
Let Competitive Analysis subtract for you
On Lite and above, enter your site and several rivals to list the searches they rank for and you do not.
A one-time version of this work, done for you and written up, is what our competitor analysis delivers. For many owners that single report answers the question that tempted them to subscribe.
Report three: Referring domains, the list behind a rival's rank
Referring domains shows the unique websites linking to a domain, a folder or a URL, with a column for how many links each one sends. Ahrefs suggests two moves: filter to followed links, which pass ranking value, and sort by the linking site's traffic. A link from a site real people read beats ten from pages nobody visits.
- Trade and civic groups. A chamber of commerce or contractors' association listing your rival and not you is the easiest gap to close.
- Suppliers and manufacturers. Dealer and installer pages often link to every certified local firm that asks.
- Local news and sponsorships. A youth league page or a news story points to a relationship you can build too.
- Serial linkers. Ahrefs' academy flags sites with 10 to 50 links to one competitor; they may link to you once they know you exist.
- Sites that link to several rivals. If three competitors share a linking domain, ask why you are missing from it.
Turning that list into links is a craft of its own, covered in how to get backlinks. Run the same report on your own site twice a year and our backlink audit guide explains what to keep, fix or ignore. Specialist outreach software is compared in link building tools.
Report four: Keywords Explorer, where volume is the weakest number
Keywords Explorer shows search volume, which Ahrefs calculates as a 12-month average for the chosen country. That is the number everyone looks at first and the one that misleads most, because a page rarely ranks for one phrase. Three other numbers on the same screen do more work.
Keyword Difficulty
A 0 to 100 estimate of how hard the top 10 will be, built from a weighted average of linking domains to the pages already there. Ahrefs says it ignores on-page factors and your own site's strength.
Traffic Potential
The total organic traffic the current number one page earns from every keyword it ranks for. A phrase with 90 searches can sit atop a page earning ten times that.
Parent Topic
The search that sends the top page the most traffic. If your phrase shares a Parent Topic with a broader one, one strong page can win both.
Clustering
Keywords Explorer can group a long list by Parent Topic, which turns a 400-row export into a short list of pages to write.
Read difficulty as a link budget, not a verdict. A low KD means the pages already ranking have few linking domains, so a well-built local page has a fair shot. Our keyword research service starts from these numbers, and keyword research tools compares cheaper sources, including Google's free Keyword Planner.
Report five: Site Audit, the report you can run for nothing
Site Audit crawls your site and checks it against more than 170 issues, according to Ahrefs, and it executes JavaScript, which matters for sites built on modern frameworks. Ahrefs Free includes it for verified sites with 5,000 crawl credits per project each month, and only HTML pages that return a 200 status use credits. A small business site fits comfortably.
The Health Score at the top is simple arithmetic: the share of internal URLs with no Error-level issues. Ahrefs sorts problems into errors to fix first, warnings to fix next and notices to handle last, and its Top issues table ranks them by how many URLs each one touches. Work it in that order, and do not chase a perfect score; a redirect notice on an old blog post costs nobody a customer.
What no crawler can tell you is whether a page answers the customer, deserves to exist or converts. That judgment is the subject of our technical SEO guide and the other crawlers in SEO audit tools. If you would rather not set up an account, DataCram's free website audit checks speed, SEO, mobile, security and content and emails a PDF of fixes.
Cheaper alternatives, matched to the job you actually have
Nobody needs Ahrefs. Some people need what it does. If your job is narrower than the whole suite, one of these may cover it for less, or for nothing. Prices come from each vendor's own pricing page in October 2026.
| Tool | Price | Strongest at | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools | Free | Your real clicks, queries and indexing; Bing adds a backlink report | Every site, before any purchase |
| Ahrefs Free | Free | Ahrefs' audit and link data, for verified sites only | Owners curious about the interface |
| Ahrefs Starter | $29 a month, monthly only | Occasional keyword and competitor lookups | A single question each month |
| SE Ranking Core | $129 a month, or $103.20 billed annually; 14-day trial, no card | 2,000 keywords tracked daily, with keyword and backlink research | Rank tracking heavy users and small agencies |
| Semrush SEO plan | $139 a month, or $117.33 billed annually; 7-day trial | Daily local rank tracking and separate ads research toolkits | Marketers who also run Google Ads |
| Mangools | Check current pricing; refunds within 48 hours of payment | KWFinder, LinkMiner and SERPWatcher in a simple interface | Beginners who want fewer menus |
Before you switch for price alone, test the replacement on your own domain and compare it with Search Console, as you did with Ahrefs. Every vendor builds its own index. Our Semrush pricing breakdown covers that suite's add-ons, rank trackers covers map pack grids, and free SEO tools maps where the no-cost stack stops.
Who should pay for Ahrefs, and who should pay for the work instead
Lite is worth $129 if
- You compete with sites that win on links, not just on proximity
- Someone will open Referring domains and Organic keywords every week
- You publish content and need Traffic Potential to choose topics
- You manage several sites and want one crawler for all of them
Keep the money if
- Your rivals are five local firms and the map pack decides the order
- Search Console shows indexing errors nobody has fixed
- The last tool you bought was opened twice
- What you want is results, not reports
That last line is the case for hiring help. DataCram's SEO programs start at $625 a month, and most local businesses land between $625 and $2,250, with no long contract. We run these same reports on tools we already pay for and act on what they show. We are not an Ahrefs partner or affiliate, and nothing on this page earns us a commission.
Questions owners ask about SEO tools
Only if someone will use it weekly. Lite costs $129 a month as of October 2026, and its value comes from competitor link and keyword research. A single-location business competing with a few local firms often gets more from Search Console, Ahrefs Free and a one-time competitor analysis than from a standing subscription.
Ahrefs Free costs nothing and gives Site Audit, Site Explorer and Web Analytics for websites you verify, with up to 1,000 backlinks or keywords visible at once. The cheapest paid plan, Starter, is $29 a month and billed monthly only, with tight limits. Lite at $129 is the first plan most working marketers find usable.
It is an estimate, not a count. Ahrefs models traffic from a site's rankings, search volumes and expected click rates, using a traffic index of 140 million US keywords. That index is a fraction of the 2.7 billion US keywords Ahrefs tracks, so long local searches may go uncounted. Compare Ahrefs' figure for your own site with Search Console to see how far off it runs in your market.
There is no universal good score, because Domain Rating is relative and logarithmic: moving from 70 to 71 is far harder than from 20 to 21. Compare your DR with the sites you compete against for the same searches. Google does not use DR, so treat it as a rough gauge of link strength, explained further in our domain authority guide.
Ahrefs lists no free trial on its pricing page as of October 2026. The practical test drive is Ahrefs Free, which runs Site Audit and Site Explorer on your verified sites. SE Ranking offers a 14-day trial without a card and Semrush a seven-day trial, if you want to try a full suite before paying.
It depends on the job. Semrush suits marketers who also research ads and need daily local rank tracking. SE Ranking Core matches Lite's $129 price with 2,000 daily tracked keywords. Mangools suits beginners. For your own site alone, Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and Ahrefs Free cost nothing. The SEO tools hub sorts them by budget.
